Hi guys today we're going to be taking a look at something very cool and somewhat uncommon. This vest was used by the East German Fallschirmjager, who were the airborne forces of the military of former east Germany. From what I've seen these vests began to be used around the mid 70's and pretty much were exclusively with the Fallschirmjager and Diensteit IX, the east German counter terrorist force. This particular version is unissued with no signs of wear, which makes it a great example to examine. Watch the video till the end to see all the neat and interesting features this vest has to offer.

I have 4 of these.. Two I have converted into survival vests and two I keep as original. I think these were truly intended for soldiers that the DDR never planned to ever come home. Ive talked to a few DDR FJs and it sounded like their overall mission outline was that they were never coming home w/o actually saying it out loud... Whats more is they were used by everyone with a special job. From Police, their SWAT equivalent, to KSK (DDR SEALS), to Air-assault troops and so on. There are MANY versions of this vest but all server the same basic form. The padding inside the shoulder is merely the same insulation the DDR used in their winter jackets. Ive seen the insides when I did my mods to my vests. Its also the same inside the elbows and knee pads of the FJ/special purpose uniform.. The older version had that back pouch in a bellowed form to hold MUCH more but they were still nearly useless as later versions (I know because Ive tried to use them.) I dont think those are Makarov pistol pouches. A MAK will slide right out of it. I think they are for a flare pistol. I have modified one of mine to keep a MAK inside and keep it secured from falling out. It took a lot of sewing otherwise you WILL lose a MAK if you try to keep it in there. I see lots of pictures of DDR FJs with belt holsters on their vests. That mores my suspicion they are actually flare pistol holsters or at the least useless for a MAK. The FJs never really had random items. Those poches at the rear had a purpose. One was for a DECON kit, One for a Raincoat and the other fora Face Net and Hood.. All in all these are glorified shirts but I love using mine here in Alaska. THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO! I hope I didnt sound arrogant as I nerded out.

Thank you so much for the information. You definitely didn't come off as arrogant, I'm always trying to learn as much info as possible about anything FJ related. What actually sparked my interest in the East German Fallschirmjager was Diensteinheit IX. I found the images of them really captivating, especially since there isn't too much information on them. I was initially researching them and trying to put together a kit for but once I realized basically all the gear they used was FJ equipment, I switched to that instead. Interesting you mention that most of their missions they weren't meant to come back. I'm in a Facebook group with a bunch of former FJ guys, it's pretty interesting. They all speak German so I haven't really asked any questions but they're a great reference when it comes to information about uniforms and other historical stuff.

Hey thnx for the reply and not thinking i was coming off like a wanker! I have loads more but its too much for posting here. I was just excited to see your video and got out what I could. Yes DIX- I couldn't remember the special police name they had. And you right there isn't a whole lot out there about any of it. Im mostly compelled to search what I can about their survival kit and training but its nearly impossible to find information about it. The harder my search the more I want to know about it. Ive gathered a pretty good collection of collectables from the FJ and Air Assault troops and other kit to use in the wilderness up here. Pictures references are out there but are scattered around the net and in books. They never seem to be in one place even in the books I have. They have some great visual references but its never enough or complete and I always want to know more. Most of the actual training information I got firsthand but it was very dry info and very basic. I almost got the impression they felt like they were betraying the DDR to talk about it. I dont have FB but I have been considering joining to find those groups. What FB groups would you recommend???.@@GearReview23

@@Ivarr.Bergmann.Alaska The Facebook group that I'm in with former FJ members is called "NVA Fallschirmjager / Paratrooper". It's private but you can easily get in as long as you ask. There are a few American guys in there with extensive collections of FJ equipment and one of them is even working on a book, complete with photos. Additionally I'm not sure if you've seen these videos yet but I know of a few on KZfaq that show FJ in action. #1 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jr6fi9mEzri1Y30.html&pp=gAQBiAQB #2 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oc9mfNNmza65oIE.html&pp=gAQBiAQB #3 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gNSVjZd3q63aiIE.html&pp=gAQBiAQB

Thanks pal. I made a FB page and joined a few groups last night. Also Thanks- I know those vids. I used some of them in a few DDR kit videos of my own. I was surprised to find the Para raid content in the hand-to-hand fighting video but it was nice and clear. I edited a few vids together with that one to make a longer raid for one of the DDR kit vids I made.. anyhow all in all thank you for the great conversation and the help with the Groups. Greetings from frozen Alaska. I hope to speak with you again!@@GearReview23

I think the stitched loops are for foilage, small branches, grass, rags, etc for additional natural camo.. The big gasmask pouch is useless.. Better to carefully unstitch the pouch material and make a new pouch or add some matching camo pouches. Best part is you can modifiy your vest to the way you like it. 👍

NVA equipment= kind of outdated strange designs and not so quality-minded... but nevertheless always very interesting

I use these vest as survival vests here in Alaska. With some time under a sewing machine and some experienced forethought, they make one hell of a survival vest.

Actually the more I think about it and compare it to other kit from other countries in the 80s don't forget Eastern many ended in 1990 the more I disagree with your comment. Yeah I disagree with you. I have plenty of surplus from this period and yes I disagree with you

In fact thinking about it more the stuff I use on a regular basis like the little backpack and my cap and a few other things they're still going and not ripped or tired or anything like that so I completely disagree with you on the quality thing. Have you ever played with British stuff from 1980 to about 1990?? You look at them funny and the buttons fall off until they decided to copy the Canadians slide button thingys . American uniforms weren't much better for shedding buttons at that time period. Can't make a comment like that unless you kind of know stuff what you're talking about.

Early pattern British disruptive pattern material uniforms up into including about 1995 were horrible for losing buttons. And then they copied the Canadian slidetype buttons and it solved the problem but good Lord were they awful at first and you had to reinforce all of them nearly. That's not just a east German problem

In the field, would troops be given replacement magazines of ammunition or would it be in some type of clip to fill up the empty magazines ? Would these be in bandoliers ?

@@GearReview23 Thanks ! I notice that the AK47 doesn't have the guide rails to load from 'stripper' clips. Some countries magazine fed weapons do, like the Czech one. Also, UK trialled an FN SLR with this ability in 1950's, but didn't adopt. Adrian; UK/England
