four East German PRAKTICAS -- the famous 'Beginner' Cameras. Film loading shown and different features. I did forget to say that the MTL3 DID have a 3mm flash socket whereas the others did NOT.

There is an almost forgotten feature on the PL Nova and some of the early L with the narrow shutter button, you can lock the release mechanism by rotating the knob. A few months ago I purchased a L for the parts, it was sold '"As Is" because the shutter was inoperative but after a closer inspection I found out that the knob was simply on the LOCK position and that the camera was in perfect working condition.

Excellent video Peter. As you said, if you don't use these Prakticas, everything will start to go wrong. When I bought my L, it was dusty and had not been used in years, the mirror was hanging when the shutter was fired at 1 second but everything went back to normal after I fired a few dozen times.

I have 3 of the lovely Prakticas--an MTL 3, an MTL 5 and an LTL. I put a 50/1.8 zebra Carl Zeiss Pancolor lens on the LTL and it's become a favorite carry camera. I got used to the front shutter release back when I was shooting Alpas, so their release is quite comfortable to me, but no one will ever accuse the Prakticas of being quiet. LOL!! I've been told that they have that "bridge" that allows them to use current alkaline batteries, but I'm still using the zinc-air hearing aid batteries in mine. Great reviews on a wonderful camera! thanks.

Kind of ironic that the M42 mount was invented By Praktica but acquired the Handle "Pentax Screw" also a lot of these Vintage cameras , especially Practica & Zenit got an undeserved rep for loud Shutters , but as a bird watcher I can definitely say that they are quieter, or at least not louder, than the "Nikcanon" machine gun DSLR s of modern times, for that that reason , I use FUJI mirror less .

Use the little 'Lightning' Symbol for your Metz electronic flash -- it sets 1/90th second OR you can set any 'Slower Speed ' such as 1/30th, 1/15th but it lets in more 'Ambient Light' which is useful when balancing ambient light with flash such as in church interiors.

Saw that you had a LB, and thought that you may have had a clue why my LB2 won't transport the film to the next frame, or even co co the mechanism to fire the shutter, but you mentioned yours isn't used at all. My selenium cell is dead as well, but I would just love to shoot the camera using Sunny 16, but can't charge the shutter to fire the way it is. Probably a broken, or missing part that some ones taken for theirs since it was an As Is when I bought it. Bit of bad luck I'd say, but if I could find a parts item to sort it out I surely would. Lovely collection Peter. Not much into the collecting field, as I'm more into the whole film photography bag. Have a very Happy New Year my friend.

@@theoldfilmbloke most folks won't ever think to dismantle what often becomes little more than a static display in their homes. Since many of my camera's are bought for low prices, and repairman charge high-dollar amounts for the most basic of care I must press on. So far my success is often better than many since most folks who deal in these things don't know how to use them in the first place, and I get lucky. The LB2, is a different situation as its Selenium Diode has probably failed, and parts aren't available to repair it anyways, but once I get it apart and resolder the connections, and find what is the issue, I can go from there. It may stay a museum piece after all is said and done. I do thank you for responding back.

@theoldfilmbloke
@theoldfilmbloke 4 жыл бұрын
I have never used the LB meter BUT as it is 'Selenium Cell' needs NO BATTERIES. I checked my one -- you must set the ASA Film Speed first in the small 'cut-out' windows for ASA and DIN systems -- I use ASA, You turn with a very small pin. THEN you aim meter cell at subject, being careful if outside not the get 'White Sky' in OR to get White Clothing for example , then turn the outer ring until the moving needle is over the 'circle' in the window and read off combinations of shutter speeds and lens apertures to choose from according to how much Depth of Field or 'action stopping' you want. My Meter WORKS !

Although the available current over time is ideal, lithium or silver oxide batteries are the wrong voltage in that form factor for the meter as it is designed. The readings will be inaccurate and not in a simple or predictable way that you can easily add or subtract a stop. There are several solutions, according to taste. The metering system can be recalibrated to use a silver oxide cell. If you are planning to have the camera serviced (CLA) by a professional, very often they can add this to the job. In fact, the latest run of the MTL5 model (also sold under the Revue ML brand) are calibrated for silver oxide cells from the factory, a good reason to keep an eye out for them. There are adapters that include a tiny voltage regulator circuit in them that allow the use of silver oxide cells with meters designed for the PX625 mercury cell. These cost about $35.00 to $40.00 each. The nearest direct replacement for the mercury cells are so-called zinc-air cells. They are activated by ambient oxygen, as the name suggests, so they would require a small vent hole in the battery compartment cap. While they have an indefinite shelf life, once activated they lose charge over time whether they are in use or not, and will need replacing every 2 to 6 months depending on size. Several companies, notably Wein, offer a direct replacement for about $7.00 per cell. A less expensive alternative is to use hearing aid cells with a mechanical adapter to fit the chamber - commercially milled adapters are available, or there are DIY solutions involving appropriate amounts of metal foil or copper wire of the proper gauge to center the cell in the chamber. These don't last as long as the Wein cells, but they are cheap enough to just change them with every roll of film. All in all, despite the rock-solid mechanical construction of these Prakticas, the electrical circuitry is rather temperamental, and I find it best to just use a modern hand-held light meter. It's not likely I'll use one of these with extreme micro- or tele-photo lenses where TTL metering is a big advantage.
