Found your channel last week and have completely enjoyed it. My wife and I are planning several weekend trips to visit NYC and your videos give great itinerary ideas for short visits. We have already visited the "cheesy" tourist attractions downtown and ready to explore the hidden areas. Thank you for your creativity.

The East Village / LES / Alphabet City is my favourite hang out spot in Manhattan! Love that you included the Anthology Film Center! I have spent a lot of time there satisfying my inner movie nerd. Lot's of old and even older history there especially if you are into 'alternative music and culture’ or if you are of German descend. Your stop #11 St. Marks Church used to have live shows and one of the first if not the first live performance of the Velvet Underground organized by Andy Warhol was at that church. The CBGB music venue was just around the corner and even the city officials understood its importance and included it in the trailer when NYC tried to get the Olympic Summer Games. Luckily they didn’t get it but unfortunately CBGB had to shut down for good in 2006. They later opened a CBGB ‘fanshop’ inside Newark airport that still exists but let’s not talk about that. The whole area around St. Marks Place and Tompkins Square Park was also the epicenter of the squatting and punk / hardcore movement in NYC. In 1975 the first “punk store” in the U.S. “Trash & Vaudeville” opened but due to the astronomical rent in the city and the gentrification they had to shut down in 2016 after having been in the same spot for 41 years. But I guess international music and movie stars need a place to live as well: Javier Bardem owns one of the tiny apartments in one of the houses next to where the shop used to be. The East Village is also known as “The Ukrainian Village” but there are barely any left but VESELKA is still there! A Ukrainian restaurant that is open 24/7. Long before the Ukrainians came the entire area was called “Kleindeutschland” (aka. Little Germany). By the late 1860’s over 50.000 German immigrants would live in the area and their community was thriving. In 1904 during a big celebration on a ship with all the heads and important people of the community the ship sank and most people died. There is still a little memorial for all the little children who drowned somewhere by the playground at Tompkins Square Park. The German community “dissolved” after that and most of them moved to other parts of NYC or the East Coast.

"The Cube" was actually titled "The Alamo", and the big brown building on the right is the original Cooper Union building, an arts and science college endowed and founded in the early 19th century. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln gave a speech there. After the speech, Lincoln and several other attendees walked down 7th Street to McSorley's Ale House to knock back a few brewski's. Put that in your next EV tour.

Momofuku Ko is pronounced basically exactly how it's spelled (Romanized). Momo rhymes with "so-so", fuku rhymes with "coo coo". Momo means peach, fuku are the sailor uniforms worn by Japanese schoolgirls. Ko means child, and Momo is also a common given name in Japan. Might've been named after someone but I dunno. Anyway, sorry about blathering on.

Back then Tompkins Square Park was literally a homeless tent city. There were riots in 1988 when the city finally kicked them out of the park. You literally cannot believe what parts of NYC were like back then. Literally like a war zone, with buildings falling down, buildings with no front WALL facing the streets, (kind of like dollhouses.) It looked like Beirut, but filled with junkies, hookers, pimps, drug dealers, etc. I'm NOT exaggerating. Alphabet City, to the East of the park WAS INSANE. A no-man's land. Everybody used the Avenue letters for Avenues A, B, C, D, to stand for A: Alright, B: Borderline, C: Crazy, D: Dead. There were no subways and no cops in there, you were risking your life! The further you went in, the worse it got. Now it's beautiful and quiet, and the apartments cost a million and up. WATCH: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eNOXmsqoyZrYmn0.html
