Phil and Grant are irreplaceable and since Grant left, it hasn't been the same and he's short comeback, only made it more apparent not the same without him.

The once cheery and more level headed Phil turned harder and harder over the years due to alcoholism, accidentally killing a vagrant in a fire, sleeping with his sister in law, rivalry with those who messed him about, crashes, being betrayed endlessly and so on. 2000 was the real turning point for him. I guess he suffered a minor brain injury after the 1999 Thames car crash with Grant which worsened his personality.

2000-2003 was definitely Phil Mitchell in his prime.

@@manvirshergill1739was his most angriest but not prime. He was way more dangerous fitter and faster mid 90s.

No, it wasn't some grand plan to change his character. It was just convenient for the terrible overdramatic writing that affected the entire show as it moved from the very late 90s to early 2000s
