It's time to head east on the Meet the Germans road trip. Rachel digs into local cuisine, culture and language and finds out just how much the region has been influenced by its relatively recent past as part of the German Democratic Republic.
On her journey around Germany, Rachel wants to discover the unique traditions, characteristics and culture that the different regions have to offer. Check out part one on northern Germany here: • Northern Germany: Meet... and part two on southern Germany here: • Southern Germany: Meet...
Which part of the culture in Germany's easternmost states do you find the most intriguing?

I love meet the germans roadtrip series. Eventhough the whole MTG episodes give knowledge about Germany, this series really shows how diverse Germany is and how the image we have from overseas about the country is so wrong due to media and stuff. For more channels like this!! Love from Argentina!!🇦🇷❤🇩🇪

They share same tribe name as Serbs from south-east Europe. The tribe split so one part moved west and other moved south probably depending on preferences towards warmth and sunshine 🌞 And whole east part of Germany has a huge slavic influence although only one tribe survived till now. Even west German city Lübeck has slavic root in the name. German words for border and cucumber are slavic by origin.

My heart is situated in East Germany ... Love Thüringer Klöße mit Rouladen, Rostbratwurst, Baumkuchen ( from Salzwedel is absolutely a topic on his own to show in the future.) The Sorbs ( Die Sorben) is a special slavic minority ...their food is special ( missed your opinion on that , Rachel) and the way they colour rheir Easter Eggs with a special wax technique is splendid. I think before Christmas you should visit Lauscha in Thuringia ...Christmas boubels ( Weihnachtskugeln) are invented over there a few centuries ago. Worth it to show on your channel. I m happy the East was also shown here ...sorry to say but I ve got the impression you often show the West of the country and neglectingvthe eastern part. Non of both sides should be neglected. But count your videos of East and West ...you will find out. greetings from an East German expad ( my parents moved away ...I had no choice)

I was in Germany in September with my cousin. Her first trip overseas. I've been to Germany several times and felt that she needed to see the highlights. We flew in and out of Berlin. Drove west and spent the first night in Weimar. We really liked the town. The remainder of the trip was Rhine/Mosel, Romantic Road, and Alps. After watching this video, I have a desire to see some of these other sites. In the past, I have been to Dresden and Gorlitz.

Germany has so much to offer in the way of culture, sights, food and history! I've been living here for over 30 years and still have so many places on my bucket-list. I really appreciate you having done a separate video for each of the four directions on the compass rather than just East vs. West. One thing that I am very glad about, is that the young generation (under 30s) no longer identify as Ossi/Wessi. Germany has always been one nation throughout their lifetime. That gives me hope that one day, there will be nobody left with a wall in their minds (die Mauer in den Köpfen).

Topic Spreewald and sorbs: Cucumbers and pickles. There are 2 different kind of pickles. The ones with vinegar and the salty ones. Many people think it's the same, but it's a huge difference and most times you love one and hate the others. I love the salted, but most people like the vinegar. If there is any kind of flavour except of dill (Pfeffergurke, Senfgurke...) it is vinegar. Also famous is Sauerkraut from this region.

What the guy in 4:15 say is so true. I like the fact when people are able to see and take part on their own blame in a society. Despite the efforts from the government even if they haven’t been enough, many people in eastern states are super close-minded and unfortunately that makes them be a bit left behind in comparison to the rest of the country.
