As the intense summer heat takes hold of Lancaster County, Thomas the Tank Engine returns to the "Road to Paradise" once again! Colorfully decorated for the "Bubble Tour" of 2024, the iconic useful engine runs short excursions from East Strasburg to Cherry Hill and return for passengers and families to enjoy. Along with Thomas, Strasburg Rail Road 2-6-0 mogul #89 would be fired up for the day operating traditional excursions to Paradise. Come along as the blue tank engine puts on a great show of steam and smoke along the Strasburg Rail Road in "Steaming Into Summer" by Keystone Rail Productions!
History of Thomas:
BEDT 15 (Thomas) is an 0-6-0st Built in 1917 by the H.K. Porter Company that was designated to work as a dockside switcher for the Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal. When it arrived at Brooklyn it was numbered 15 and was tasked to switch freight cars and take short coal trains around the docks and onto railroad barges, often pulled by the railroad's tugboat. When it was finally retired in 1965 It was moved to the South Appalachia Railway in Burnsville, North Carolina from 1965 to 1975 when it was moved to the Toledo, Lake Erie and Western Railway in Grand Rapids, Ohio. It was then put on Static Display for a number of years. In 1998, the locomotive was purchased by the Strasburg Rail Road in Lancaster, PA, and was then converted into the only live steam example of Thomas in the United States that we see today.
History of Strasburg Rail Road 89:
Strasburg Rail Road 89 is a 2-6-0 mogul that was built in 1910 by the Canadian Locomotive Company for the Grand Truck Railway as No. 1009, and was designated as a E-10-a. In 1919 she was then renumbered to 911. In 1951, after the Grand Trunk Railway merged into the Canadian National Railway, the locomotive was once again renumbered to become Canadian National 89. She was one of the many steam workhorses that could be found operating for the CN in service. In 1965, she was sold to the Green Mountain Railroad. Then in 1972, 89 was sold to the Strasburg Rail Road, where she resides today in her Canadian inspired appearance pulling passenger and freight services reliably.
