Because critters can dig, you could still have gaps closer to the ground. You may also want to use long landscaping pins or cut pieces of clothes hangers to help pull and secure the poultry netting & exsiting fencing closer to the ground.

Most garden seasons we observe dozens and dozens of rabbits in the side and front yard but never in the garden. You may want to go higher, like 4 feet. I haven't had a problem since I added the chicken wire along the base of the fence, so between the 4 ft taller fence and the 18" chicken wire blocking their ability to squeeze through, it's been successful so far.

@@TheMillennialGardener There are a pair of coyotes that make just about a daily journey about daybreak from their den in a thicket of pepper trees up the canyon that makes up the north end of our property. I’ve named them “Larry” and “Reatha”. They return just after dusk after, I surmise, hunting along the way. There’s a large area of undeveloped land that’s riddled with gopher and ground squirrel burrows that probably provides them with ample rodent kill opportunities. In my opinion they are part of the natural ecosystem and we’ve learned to live with them. Unfortunately house cats and small dogs are coyote menu items as well and several have gone missing in our neighborhood.

@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 2 жыл бұрын
The problem is once they get bent like that, you can't unbend them straight and true anymore. It'll create a pretty nasty edge to get caught on. It's easier to just cut off about 12 inches and have a clean line, in my opinion. Getting caught on fence is no fun.
@nmnate

@@TheMillennialGardener Oh, yep. Definitely easier to just cut it off. I just wanted to point out that you don't have to. You can unbend it fairly easily with a pair of pliers or by hand with some leather gloves. Pulling tension on it helps quite a bit. We have to cage basically anything that the rabbits like to eat or like to see if it's edible when food sources are slim (fall through spring). Apple trees are especially tasty (they'll girdle the trees at the base if given a chance). Usually a cage up to 18" is adequate for having the cage tight to a plant but you do have to go a bit taller (28-30") if they can hop over it. If you're enclosing an area, make sure they can't fit underneath a gate or can't burrow underneath a barrier. Once they know food is in an area they will come back repeatedly. Having a barrier they can't see through might help a bit. I had a baby rabbit get into an enclosed garden bed that was like yours (4"x2" wire up to 30" with a lining of chicken wire at the bottom). I still can't figure out how it got in, it was so young when I caught it (quite clumsy still). I think by the time they're big enough to leave a nest or burrow their heads are probably just too big to fit though the chicken wire. If you're curious, rabbits are lagomorphs. I used to lump them in with rodents, but I don't any more. Rodents are way harder to control, they climb really well and small mice (i.e. deer mice) go right through chicken wire.
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 2 жыл бұрын
Yea, I learned about the lagomorph family. Rabbits were officially classified as rodents for a very long time, but they were eventually reclassified due to their teeth. They have that ability to turn their bodies into pudding, similar to a rat, though. They can squeeze through holes a tiny fraction of their own size. How large do the tree calipers have to be before they become undesirable and you can un-cage them?
@nmnate
@nmnate 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheMillennialGardener I'd bet it might have to do with how thick the bark becomes. I'll probably reassess when my trees are at least 6" diameter at the base. I've had numerous branches that are ~2' off the ground get tipped or completely removed by rabbits (apples, plums, apricots and jujubes in my yard), so sometimes protecting the trunks won't eliminate everything when you're trying for fairly low open center tree shapes. I'm learning to live with rabbits in my yard, excluding them where I can. When food gets scarce they seem to do the most damage. I'll regularly get a couple rabbit litters in the yard per year (3-4 bunnies usually) and they don't seem to do too much damage then as there's plenty of grasses or other native plants to munch on.

I feel your pain. I had a cat problem in my raised beds and put up the 2x4 fence. Later the rabbits moved in and one was able to get inside the raised beds. Later I would go in one end of the garden to harvest the black crowder peas and he would rum out the other end then run around to the other end where I started and make a circle! I never could run him out, but I could not use my min-pin dog or I would still be chasing her! Squirrels are my enemy. I trapped and relocated 18 in about a 2 week period. I put up a trail cam to video the squirrel captures and baited the traps with peanut butter and found a black bear and a coyote has been in my back yard. The bear loved the peanut butter, he licked the traps clean!
@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 2 жыл бұрын
I had a neighbor's cat using my raised beds as their litter box before I got my perimeter fence around my yard. That quickly put an end to that problem, thankfully. It's tough to get rabbits to leaves once they're "caged in." You have to set some sort of trap. I'm fortunate I don't have a squirrel problem. At least yet. There aren't many around here; probably because there aren't any deciduous oak trees here. It is mostly redbay, live oak and magnolia, here, which are all evergreen and don't drop any nuts for them to forage. However, I still occasionally see one or two here or there. It isn't like where I lived in NJ, where they outnumbered people.

Our garden isn’t in its final location this season, due to having to wait for another project to be completed to move and expand it, but I’m hoping to build something like this once it’s in. I need to find your install video to see more about the post anchors (I want to build a small firewood storage area myself this fall). The only animals Tonks doesn’t tolerate at all are chipmunks-she hates them. All fall though, during our mornings in the yard she’d wag her tail at the bunnies every morning, then go about sniffing and inspecting.

@@dubistverrueckt we haven’t had any problems with them at all. They are moderately interested when our dog comes out in the morning (who just wags her tail at them), but the timberline is close there and they either continue doing whatever they are doing, or slowly hop back to the woods. Squirrels and deer are bigger issues for us, though even that is mostly curiosity (the squirrels play with anything we put outside for the first few days). We woke up several times this winter to deer eating the evergreens in our front yard).

We just had this happen for the first time this year - after 6 years of gardening, we never had issues with our fall garden. As of last night, it's all gone - 8 4x8 beds, gone... Peas, beans, carrots, kohlrabi, spinach, parsnips, cabbage, sugar beets... all gone. The green beans looked like they were just yanked out, I'm thinking that it was deer that did that. I've just started seeing rabbits, and we have a load of squirrels. I'm thinking that with the Covid gardens that went in this past year, the local critters have gotten a taste for the good stuff and seek it out first. None of the local foods like acorns, broad leaf plantain, dandelions have been touched... I'm gonna have to get creative because most of my beds are on the side of the house. (Portersneck area, New Hanover Co.)

2-3 rabbits can make short work of an entire garden nearly overnight. It's a total feast-or-famine feeding frenzy. Once they find your yard and determine it as a food source, they'll keep coming back indefinitely. This is why fencing is so important. Rabbits have been coming back to my yard for 3 years straight. Even though they don't have access to my garden anymore, they keep crawling under my main perimeter fence trying to search for food. The good news is, they're incredibly lazy and simple barriers will keep them out as long as they can't squeeze their bodies through any gaps.

You got that, we got evil squirrels… so many of them… digging, eating and destroying the fruits and veggies we grow. And how long is your string beans? Ours got over a foot long and going near 2ft that I ended up calling if noodle beans 😆

I do occasionally see a squirrel here or there, but if a squirrel is on the fence, Dale chases them away like a missile. Luckily, squirrels aren't interested in anything in my yard (yet). Rabbits are more challenging, because they come out at night when Dale is comfortably curled up on his bed inside. Right now, the plants are probably a foot tall. There are no beans on them just yet, but they're beginning to flower a lot.

They absolutely cannot squeeze through it. Climbing, I’m sure they could get over it. You would have to build an outward facing overhang, sort of like a soffit, to block them from climbing. It would be really comfortable, though. I would think they wouldn’t enjoy it, but it is technically feasible.

@TheMillennialGardener
@TheMillennialGardener 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. Most annual vegetables don't actually require pollinators, but for the handful that do, what I've noticed is that bees fly higher than pests. Bees will easily fly 8 feet to get over a screen, but the leaf footed bugs, leaf hoppers, stink bugs, etc. will have a big challenge to get in. The dragonflies and lizards will also have no trouble flying over and scaling the walls to get in.
