There are a variety of different ways to setup a hammock. This particular way I find very easy and affordable.

It's even better if you use the carabiner as the toggle. Then unclip when you finish, and the knot comes undone.

This is a good methood! I've been using this method for years except I use the biner as the toggle itself. Great vid sir.

Good talk and vid. 5* Someone did a hammock vid with a "tree hang" being a car seat belt with sewn double-ended loops. Carabine the loops together with the hammock roping. So, instead of a seat belt, use (6 ft?) fixed lengths of mule tape (stronger 1250# test, 1/2 - 1 inch width, firm, hard hammock) or nylon belting (stretchier, 3/4 - 1 inch bouncy, softer hammock). For small trees, use the belt and do loop-through-loop and tighten up. Big tree just wrap around. Carabine the loop(s) to the hammock roping. Easy up, easy down. Mule tape or nylon belting "flat rolls-up" into thin moldable circular or elliptical shape in the backpack. No unwieldy large volume of hanked paracord. The hammock roping is the master tightening system for variable length, height, shape, and tension of the hammock. Excess hammock roping (from the head and foot ropings) are then tied together as a ridge line for a tarp coverall. Carabiners stop the rain running down the ropes, while the ridge line rope hides under the coverall. Neat!

I roll up excess webbing and slide it into the slip knot as the spike. 40 nights plus, no failures. The nice thing is that there's no need to fashion spikes, or carry extra hardware

The knot trick will help out when I find myself stuck with substantially large trees when setting up my Hennessy Hammock. I've had issues with larger trees using up too much of my webbing, causing my hammock to be hung higher than I would like. With this technique, I wouldn't need to wrap the webbing around the tree a couple of times. This would allow a few feet of additional webbing on each side for those instances when the trees are either really thick or spaced far apart.

Good system. I assembled mine very much based on what you showed me with yours. I like how it works.

Great Vid ! I'm debating between the dutchwear gear nettless hammock, and the netted Bugnet. Option 1, netless... and go with a summer/ winter sock. Option 2 zipper Bugnet option. Thoughts, Opinion, Knowledge ? Thank you !

Good video and informative. I do a fair amount of hammock camping with a Hennessy Expedition. I just tie the suspension ropes around the tree. No straps, carabiners, or unique knots. My method would make a really boring DIY hammock hang vid!

HOW DO YOU STAY WARM AT NIGHT THOUGH? WILL A SLEEPING BAG DO?
@jamesbaldwin91978 жыл бұрын
Depends on the temperature. Sometimes a heavy blanket will work just fine, others a below zero sleeping bag is what you need. Either way it needs to be large enough to wrap all the way around you front and back. Hammock material is not very thick and lets in a lot of cold air.
@calebbrooks5488 жыл бұрын
+Rokelpidio 1103 You can buy a top quilt and a under quite from Eno. some are rated to 30°F. A sleeping bag is not a good idea because the hammock will comprise the installation and the sleeping bad will not keep you warm compared to the top quilt and the under quite.

I just got some two inch webbing to use in the state parks in Texas where it’s required. I was planning on using a slippery two half-hitch knot against the tree and then doing the rest like you’re doing. I’ve used the slippery two half hitch on my tarps and never had any problem even after having quite a load on it. What do you think about using it on a human load? I would trust it, but maybe I shouldn’t. Also, will a prussik hold onto webbing? I’ve never tried it. I think I remember seeing a video where someone did it. I’ve just switched my hanging method to a single tree strap for my hammock and tarp and I’m curious about how I can make it work in a state park with my two inch webbing. My normal tree straps have the multiple loops in them andI just select the loop close to where I want it. If I need to fine tune anything I just adjust how the strap wraps around the tree.

Any reason not to use the caribiner as the toggle? I use the caribiner right in the marlin spike hitch.
@PaulBuikema9 жыл бұрын
Nice, keep it simple. When I set my hammocks up with simple webbing I put the carabiner through the knot where you put the toggle, foresee any problems with that?
@Cr0cket209 жыл бұрын
+Paul Buikema Not off hand. You said you've tried it that way (I never have). Seems like it would bind down too much and be a pain to undue? Let me know.
@georgerosado51948 жыл бұрын
great video thanks so much. but question for u sir: is it still possible that the carabineer can slip into that toggle?
@Cr0cket208 жыл бұрын
I was just up in the mountains for 3 days with 2 hammocks setup in just this manner. There were about 8 kids swinging in them, turning upside down, etc and the carabineers stayed just fine.

@DannyB-cs9vx3 жыл бұрын
The way you pulled the loop to the right side of the tree and then pulled back on the webbing puts a lot of unnecessary stress on the loop and webbing. You can cut a string with a string. If you put a heavy load on the line, (like using a winch to pull out a vehicle), the webbing would brake where it passes through the loop. The webbing should pass through the loop in a straight manor. It will not slide down the tree. If you are real concerned about it, wrap the webbing around the tree and through the loop twice.

So we are moving to southern Wyoming next year, either the Laramie or Rock Springs area, which do you think would be most effective in those locals, a hammock or A-frame tent? I plan on doing a lot of backpacking in type camping.

How do you feel about using the Becket hitch rather than the marlin spike?
@Cr0cket203 жыл бұрын
I have not used the Becket hitch but it looks interesting and streamlined. Might have to try that next time I set up the hammock. I actually have stopped using the spike and just put the carabiner through the same knot as outlined in the video. Essentially eliminating a step and streamlining. But again I'm interested in the becket hitch you mentioned.
@abialo20109 жыл бұрын
Hey man. Ive been hammocking for years now. I gotta ask why you would bother with the toggle if your using a carabiner? You can just used the biner as the toggle then do an extra slippery half hitch for added slip protection. Your just complicating the works by adding the stick. Ill admit ive done that before in the beginning. When are you going to upgrade to amsteel ucr's and join the civilized ultralight world?! haha great vid

would this work with strong rope instead of webbing?
@Cr0cket208 жыл бұрын
Yes. But I would recommend the webbing over rope.
@neanderthor669 жыл бұрын
Couldn't you just forego the toggle in the marlin spike and run the carabiner through the knot instead?
@Cr0cket209 жыл бұрын
+neanderthor66 Personally I wouldn't. Would put a lot of tension on the hitch and I would guess hard to untie. With the toggle the stress is put on the webbing.

Why not just use the tree straps, and run them through the carabiners attached to the hammock, and use a hammock knot.
