Extremely helpful video; thank you! I've been trying to learn Chinese brush calligraphy for years and no books have ever been as helpful as watching somebody - such as yourself - write the characters while explaining the finer points of how they work. Now I know why my calligraphy often turns out looking so bad! 😆 Thanks again for sharing this wonderful video. 👍

haha because I'm chinese, my white american expect me to have amazing calligraphic handwriting like you - but as soon as i start writing characters that look like child drawings they realize i'm very bad at chinese :)

Very informative! Does the fanning out structure still apply when you write characters for day-to-day things like notes, etc. or is it not as pronounced/important?

thehentaiman13666 Yes it applies, and it's quite a natural thing. But of course it's not as strict in the normal daily life writing, but it's there. If the person is actually practicing calligraphy, the stuff will show in their normal writing as well.

To repeat what I wrote in another reply, the styles demonstrated in this video are but a few of many styles of Chinese calligraphy, and not all of them make use of this fanning out structure. Regular does, and so does clerical to a some extent, but seal script is highly symmetrical while cursive and semi-cursive are highly variable. Even within regular script, there are variations in shape, with some typefaces being more symmetrical than others.
