Florida is filled with so much nature! At home, we’re blessed with beautiful birds that fly all over our acres of property, especially blue birds which always stay close by to put on a show for us in the early mornings. I wanted to take some time to build a Birdhouse for the Blue Birds and thought it would be such a fun project to do with Carson!
For parents, intentional time with your children is always an incredible investment. Teaching your children how to use their hands, how to use simple skills, and how to create things are wonderful ways to engage their growing minds.
Using a single 6ft Cedar Dog-Ear picket I picked up at a local hardware store for under $3 (Our was 5 7/16 wide and 6 foot long), we prepared our cut list, and were able to make a few short cuts to create our bird house!
Tools Needed:
1 Hand Saw
1 Drill
1 Speed Square
Cut List:
1. Our first cut was an angle cut at 12” and 14” (a 20 degree angle). Our 2nd cut used to cut lines to create our next side panel.
2. Next, we cut the back. I measured 15 1/2” long and made the straight cut.
3. The front measured 12 1/2” as another square cut.
4 and 5. Next, we cut the bottom at 4 1/4” long followed by the top which was 7 1/2” long.
Once complete, we put the pieces toghether using wood glue and wood screws. We also drilled holes for ventilation throughout the birdhouse (especially as it gets warmer here in Florida). Then we mounted the bird house to one of the trees in the yard and woke up nice and early the next morning to see the birds.
What a blessing it was to be greeted by our favorite blue bird!
Being able to use some basic tools and some basic resources, it was such a fun experience to create this birdhouse out of a common material. Carson was amazed at how easy it all came together and was so excited to know that something we created could be used to house and be a blessing to God’s creation.
We hope you found this DIY helpful and appreciate you following along with us!
We’ll see you soon and we love you!
