I built a hand dredge and I used a side of an old car tire for a plunger. I also used plumers putty in order to have it slide in the pvc pipe.

I’ve watched many of these... your approach to the gasket/plunger seal is on point! The leather won’t break down (unless you don’t use the dredge often enough) and it also has a better chance to make a better seal as it swells! I’m glad I stumbled across your page. You have a new sub!

Something I saw on another video was to use thin-walled ABS pipe for the nozzle so you can flatten the end to get into narrow spaces.

You have screw fittings attaching the plunger gasket assembly to the shaft. Great idea because it allows you to access the bolt to take it all apart if need be.

That's one of the better diy tutorials for a hand dredge. I've attempted to build the plunger out of rubber gaskets and a bunch of other material but eventually broke down and bought a set of well plungers cups. Thing is, I never got to complete the project because I lost the cups before I could install them.

@@DamonFeyOutdoors I will be testing this weekend. I am curious about the longevity of the leather. I was also considering adding a second layer to the plunger using 4 pieces of leather total.

concept and parts used is brilliant , execution might be better without coffee :D only thing i see on 95% of all the hand dredge videos , is 1.5-2 " pipe. my point is if you use 3" pipe you get so much more suction . i`v made both and the suction is about double with a 3" , and you can go slower and much more controlled .

The 2” might be a bit easier to hold onto - especially if the user has small hands, but the 3” will have more volume.

I tried it this weekend and found a few necessary changes. #1 drill a hole in the top cap where the plunger goes in to allow air flow. #2 add a wire or screw/bolt through the center of the sucker end to keep large rocks from clogging the pipe.

Make sure you put a bolt across the nozzle horizontally so you don’t pick up large rocks or debris and it also suggest that you maybe want to make a plunger handle with different material because that T-handle will be pinching your hand. I would suggest using a L handle so you’re fingers are split on the side. But once again the most important feature is you got a put two or 3/4 inch holes at the top of your plunger to allow air to escape when you pull up. Put them 1 inch from the top of your cap and the length of your Plunger
