This video shows you how to make items that are used for tea ceremony. You will see how to make a kaishi ire (懐紙入れ), a sukiyabukuro (数寄屋袋), an a kobukusa (古帛紗). These are easy sewing projects for beginners that you can also use in your daily life to bring a little Japanese culture into your every day.

That was very very interesting. I am a fairly new subscriber and have learned a lot already about proper attire and accessories. I think I will be making a pouch like the one you made with the magnet clasp or a relative that is in Chemo therapy and takes a book with her. Have to have some pretty somewhere in that situation and have the nicest cherry blossom fabric scrap that would be perfect for that. This was so nice to watch, I love little things that have so much meaning being used in daily life. Thank you! I wanted to ask if you could go over the history of Japanese fabrics and what kinds of fabric are. I’m trying to make sense of some of it but there’s a lot I don’t understand.

Lovely video! Practicing tea ceremony... This will be really useful. I would love to hear more about the fabrics used in tea ceremony (donsu and kinran) and how they differ from each other. They're both some kind of brocade fabric but what classifies them as donsu or kinran? That part is still unclear to me... I don't know if I'm asking too much, but thank you anyway!

Yeah, this video wasn’t about weaves, so of course tried to stay focused onto the sewing projects, because I could talk at least half an hour about it. Donsu is a completely different weave. It’s rather a satin silk weave.

Hello Billy, thank you very much for your easy to follow small necessities tutorial. I'm not planning on attending a tea ceremony soon, but I love small bags and handkerchiefs. Was it usual to do some embroidery , or were simple fabrics more preferred? Happy Holidays!

Haha! To be honest: I never attend tea ceremonies. So these are only for my daily use. Of course you can also put some embroidery on those. There is no no-go 😊

Thank you Billy, I love your channel! I have a question: I bought a wonderful, second hand yukata (online) recently. It fits perfect except that it's too short. It skims my ankles before I even make a fold in it. Is it ok to sew additional fabric on the bottom? The hem is only about 1 cm, so I can't let it down. Thank you :)

I have sometimes wondered as well if I could make a kimono longer. Adding to the waist has seemed more natural to me, if it can be measured so that it is hidden within the ohashori or under the obi. With kimono that have longer sleeves I think it would be possible to take the fabric from the sleeves and that way only the seams would need hiding as the fabric was the same.
