Easy Kumihimo For The Beginner Part I

Kumihimo is hot right now and very fun to do. In this tutorial, I show you just how easy it is to create fabulous braided cord for many applications. I repeat the steps many times so you can follow along with me instead of stopping and starting the video.
For measuring your cording, it is generally 3" of cord per 1" of finished length per warp (8 warps in total). So for a 6" bracelet, you will need 18" of cord for each warp + extra (@ 8"-12") for good measure.

I bought my first one at the Dollar Tree. I use my cords for necklaces. Then I bought the Cool Maker. Works pretty well for bracelets. But nothing beats doing it by hand.

This seems to have been quite an older post, but nevertheless, kumihimo is timeless. I just want to say that you are an excellent teacher. The simplest concept can be difficult to understand if not presented in a certain way. I absolutely LOVE kumihimo. Thanks so much for sharing.

I've been making paracord survival bracelets for 8 months and for some reason I've taken an interest in the Kumihimo braiding. Tonight I will make my first Kumihimo bracelet with paracord. You said we could use anything and I have tons of paracord. This will be done with the small cord. Wish me luck!!!

Thank you for a great tutorial. I was having a bit of an issue when it came to securing the cord in the bobbins. I used my rotating leather hole puncher, set it on the largest hole and punched a hole on the flat side of the bobbin. I put the cord through the hole from the inside then secured the cord with tape on the outside. Now I don’t have to cut long strands to secure the cord in place.

Irishstreettattoo Barry Thank you for watching. Yes 3x your finished LENGTH is a safe amount. Rat tail is cheap enough to waste a bit, but useless if you run out.

+Jr rwighemera Well, I know from experience with using the different cords what I will get with 8 warps. Usually when I'm thinking of using something different, I will do a small sample first. Don't forget to stretch it a bit as this thins it out too. Thanks so much for watching.

i saw a kit on ebay that sells all the things you need for making and creating necklaces bracelets and so on i was wondering if you can recommend the least expensive place to get the supplies to do this i would need everything ..thanks for this tutorial i am sure i am going to rewatch this a number of times cant wait to get going

i have nothing and also have been watching vids to learn i am on ssi so i thought about getting this kit from ebay from seller gwessell they have a huge online store for kumihimo ...dropping that kind of money is crazy for me..maybe u can check his store out compare i guess ..and since you are setting up to sell .keep me in mind i have just an understanding but no experience but have to say in the last mo i started trying to make jewelry and i have the basic knowledge....no not the skill yet headpins are still some what an issue could be the tools and material i am working with..anyway a starter kit and the immediate tools i would need would be good i liked the square but want to do all ..thanks for answering my comment..i have to be careful though i have gotten a bit obsessed with this jewelry making and purchased a lot of findings on ebay..but haven't done much with it..I saw kumihimo and wished i had started this first verses traditional costume jewelry making. i also saw a vid on crocheting jewelry and liked this also..you kind of skip on jump rings clasps head pins and so on lol again thanks

Marlene Keshvari Hi Marlene. I know the general measurement is 3x your desired length. What you can do is take notes on how much you end up wasting and subtract that from the total length to use. You can use the extra length for bracelets, etc. (not Kumihimo). How much extra are you ending up with? Don't forget that you need a little extra for tying them all together.

Very cool! This is the first I've heard of Kumihimo. The word sounds Japanese, is that right? Thanks for furthering my 'edumacation'. ;) Oh, and your necklace and earrings are absolutely gorgeous! I'm very intrigued by the finish. Would you consider a video on how to do the finish? (that is, if it's one of your pieces) :)

Thank you Leslie for watching. Oh Kumihimo is addicting and yes it is Japanese. I suggest you start with this video and part II to get the technique down. Next go to the beaded Kumihimo vids. After that you will be able to do any of my videos that are "experienced" and "advanced". Yes, I did make my necklace and earrings. These will be in a metal series that you will be able to purchase.

If you want a 6 inch bracelet, that the number 6 and multiply it by 3... so that is 18 inches of cord.... well, you need a little extra cord length to be able to tie your knots off... so, after you get the length of the cord for the finished bracelet length, add about 8x12 inches of cord length to each cord... that way you have enough to tie everything off! I ALWAYS add at least a foot of length just in case I need more!

Hi I know you posted this a long time ago so not sure if u'll get my response. Thx, great tutuorial. I have a q. though: I bought the beginn. kumihimo set kit and I wanted to make two shoelaces. The ind. threads r about 10 feet in length, which is (based on the 2.5X rule) about the right l. for a shoelace. But they only give u 4 cords in the kit, so I thought i would try and make a braid with 2 cords (twice) for two shoelaces. Is it possible for one to braid with just the two lengths and then at 31/32 and 16/15 positions (on the disc)? If so how do you rotate? I tried and it didn't seem to work, Thx, Jeff

I couldn't handle working with all that stuff on the strings, I rather use my fingers on my left hand to hold the bracelet like the women from Csldesigns does I couldn't handle it with the weight and the bobbins especially for a bracelet.
