Skylum has added several features to Luminar Neo since its launch in February 2022. The most recent feature addition is Mask AI - and it’s pretty darn cool. I like the approach and direction Skylum is taking with AI-powered masking in Luminar Neo. Mask AI analyzes your image, identifies a variety of different elements and objects in the scene, and presents one-click buttons to create masks for those objects.
In this video, I’ll give you a tour of Mask AI using two examples of landscape images from my library.

Neo is shaping up to be a easy to use tool. Maybe the next step is the addition of mask refinement tools like photoshop.😎

Hey Ron! That would be a very nice add. I (still) want edge detection to be added to their brush tool, too :)

@@ScottDavenport Yes, a brush without it is a clunky instrument. PS and LR are getting so "Sensei" that I don't leave them too much anymore except for Topaz DeNoise.

Thanks Scott for a great tutorial. I am liking what Skylum is doing with Mask AI but don't think it's quite prime time ready at this point. For example, your first demo with the tree showed it masked all the spaces within the branches as well. If you then did significant adjustments to the tree there then would be a noticeable difference between the background ocean/sky and the ocean/sky within the branches. Neo's lack of an edge aware brush would make masking out those areas very time consuming. Photoshop is miles ahead of Skylum at this point. However, in time I hope this gets developed to a more advanced tool. I surely admire that Skylum is doing anything at this point as the war rages on.

Hi Steven ... that's for your comments and thoughts. No doubt there is room for improvement (when is there not! :). I've found the Mask AI works best with the other AI tools in Luminar Neo. In the tree example in the video, using Structure AI is pretty safe because that tool already knows there isn't small detail to enhance in the sky. You are correct that for a different type of adjustment, such as a color temperature shift, the mask from the AI is insufficient.

Confession: I have called Topaz tech support for help with a high-quality GoPro file where I wanted to post-prod the background of a Still Life TIFF (floral wall in San Fran). The Topaz tech conceded that the masking detailing of Topaz Mask AI does not have the capabilities. I will study this tutorial because I do not even know what Luminar Neo is . . .

Very sexy software but as you illustrated in the last image on the building, I can do the same thing faster and just as well using the Perfect Brush in On1 Raw. That seems to be missing in Neo, which relies instead on AI that takes more time.

Neo and Skylum have a different approach to masking than other tools. Great for some things, needs work in others.

After the AI examines the photo, and presents the objects it finds (human, sky, ground, transport, etc.), each is a toggle. You can click multiples to have the tool affect multiple things.

I find it incredible that this Mask AI can't distinguish the blue top of the buildings from the sky and add it to structures. By now we could expect AI to be able to combine the color blue with hard structures and say no, this can't be "sky". When I saw your title "Easy Masking ..." I thought Luminar's Mask AI could have moved to the next level, and you would be able to show me a perfect masked tree - with foliage included and tiny specs of sky excluded. - But no. I am still waiting. Topaz AI has given up on their Mask AI, so the level of AI masking, I am suggesting - which would be really useful - is still unsolved.

Hi Eigel ... that's the one that surprised me the most ... Mask AI with skies. Sky AI does better with building sky masks on its own.

Is there no way to refine the mask, such as on the trees with the significant halos?

You can use the paint brush tool to do more masking. Note the brush does not have edge detection.

I wander if there are any possibilities of having NEO as a plug in for On1 Photo Raw 2022 in the future. The more I use NEO the better it seems to be.

Hi Charles ... yes, you can do that. ON1 Photo RAW 2022 supports Photoshop plugins, and Luminar Neo provides a PS plug-in. I have another video describing how to use PS plugins with ON1. I just tried it with PR 2022 and the latest Luminar Neo and it worked.

@@ScottDavenport Thanks for that. I will watch your tutorial and will be mighty happy for this as I use On1 for my DAM and though most work can be done in On1 there is a lot in NEO to take advantage of.

@@ScottDavenport Hi Scott. Interesting that you got the Neo plugin to work with RAW 2022. I’m also using a Mac and although AI will work as a plugin without problem, when I try to use Neo everything just hangs.
