Hello Historical Fashion Friends!
Welcome back! Or Welcome! I'm still on schedule, its a miracle! Actually I even have extra videos so I may post one extra per week if I start to have a really good production schedule to make a lot of videos.
This is Part Two of the two part series on the construction of my Viking/Fantasy inspired overdress for my Foundations Revealed Costume. This was designed for the character Keladry of Mindelan from the Tamora Pierce book series Protector of the Small. I was inspired by Viking and Early Medieval Styles, as well as some elements of early Tudor style.
Come back Friday for an episode on turning my storage unit into a craft room, part 1.

Great video, if you choose to pursue more leatherwork in the future invest in a moccasin awl, and a pair of pliers. Mark and pre-punch your holes in your leather before sewing. Leather is sewn dry and only wetted prior to turning. I’d love to see you try more leatherwork!

Thank you for the tips! I actually got a big leatherworking kit as a Christmas gift!! Excited to use it, thanks for the note on wetting prior to turning!

Second hand stores are the greatest places in the world to get damaged goods to make moccasins collars you name it so yeah you did a great job and I love your work I can't wait to make me a pair of those

Yes, I love finding things to give new life to. I am working on a second pair next week that I think will be more improved. I found this sole a little thin, and I am going to do ones with a two layer sole that I think will make walking over stones etc more comfortable. And some improvements to make a better butt stitch and more waterproof seam.

Wonderful video. Would love to see more turn shoes used in re-enactment. It can be fun and relaxing at times to work on your own stuff, and certainly rewarding if it comes out right!

I am thinking of making some short boot style or something else a little more fancy next, maybe something that ties shut. I saw some very interesting ones in the book. Probably will get myself a proper tool for putting the holes in first.

Hi Denis, Thank you! Since I got new leatherworking tools I am very much looking forward to creating a new pair of shoes, and some other leather crafts as I have a good amount of leather material left over. I will definitely post more leather craft videos!

It's nice to see someone make turnshoes without having to buy all the expensive tools. I want to make a pair but can't justify buying stuff for a one off project. I only need 1 pair. Lol

Yes, I know what you mean. That was why I wanted to try without it. They work well enough. It's costly to buy everything to make them with the last and all the right leatherwork tools.

I would recommend some serious viewing of tutorials - it will make following the patterns in the book so much easier. Well done on making your first pair.

Thank you so much! I recently got a whole leather tool kit and am working on researching patterns for Tudor shoes to choose one. And I'll be sure to use the saddle stitch. I recently made a bag, and used the saddle stitch on it which worked great.

The shoe thing is really so difficult to find something accurate that also isn't crazy expensive, that's why I just ended up making them haha. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be other than my hands hurt a lot after.

I love the video. Out of curiosity if I was to use fish skin leather would the shoes still be okay? Or would it be too thin? Also if I can do it with fish leather would it still be okay if I have to sew multiple strips of the leather together, since fish leather is smaller than normal leather. Please let me know I would really like to try this.
@gabbytriestomakethings

Hi Evelyn! I have not tried anything with fish skin leather, so I cannot speak to how it would work for this type of application. I think if you used two layers it would work, but I am not certain and can't speak from experience.

Evelyn, you might double up. Put you fish skin pieces on thinner veg tan cow hide so that the cow hide is a liner.

What step are you finding most difficult? I recommend getting a special tool to prepunch the holes like this one. It helps a lot. wutaleather.com/products/wuta-leather-chisel-hole-punch-stitching-tool-diamond-pricking-iron-leather-craft-tool?variant=34721257521285&currency=USD&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0oyYBhDGARIsAMZEuMs4FueEkBMtEubN4hPeCWe9_Gz9BBy3tdnICUBalI4VvKj8TbawpR4aAh_QEALw_wcB
