Easy Mixed Media: Ideas for Using Your Handwriting

In this video, I give suggestions for incorporating your personal handwriting into your art. This is not about beautiful hand lettering but is meant to be messy and unreadable. The idea is to create a background or collage material or even use it as a simple warm-up exercise. If you've never tried this it's super quick and easy--perfection not allowed!

Thank you so much for your kind words and support. Unfortunately or fortunately (however you decide to look at it) I am not actually using a Bible as an art journal in this video. I do agree with you as I do not think Jesus would be offended if I was using a Bible.

Before I saw your video, I had done some scribbling with a dip pen illegibly on a little watercolor background. I really liked the effect and thought it might be fun to take that to the next level but not sure what that might be. Maybe it would be fun to illegibly write my poetry as a background and then do a forest of trees to mostly cover. My favorite one of yours was the last one really love that illegible script type handwriting.

Writing is a great way to start, and your layers are lovely. Non-dominant hand writing too. I love the effects using ink on your pages. Tfs.

@@pamhemmerling Funny, today I had a bit of time to putter in the studio and was feeling very uninspired...and then I picked up a black posca and started writing...very fun and so low pressure! I put a bunch of quotes on a few mixed media pieces in progress, and then covered a big page with random words for collage. It was great and made me feel like I'd accomplished something...so you saved me! 😄

It's not even asemic writing, because it's legible, readable. Sgrafitto is where you scrape through one material or colour to reveal another colour underneath. 👍

I'm not sure if that is something you shouldn't do or not--but I'm generally one to break the rules a bit because I don't know any better! I use paintbrushes with my india ink all the time.

Consider Chinese calligraphy. Brushes go well with inks.

Scraffito means to scratch. Anemic writing is illegible.

I was watching this on a Roku with a big screen TV and noticed that the book you are using as a substrate looks to be a Christian bible. Interesting choice. I myself am not that much of a fan of "Apostle" Paul, but just the same I think I'll pass watching your video as it seems disrespectful regardless what people's beliefs are.

Bible has been Saved from going to a landfill site. It is being honoured. The message still resonates through the art. Similar to Journalling then painting over your words. It is a matter of how you look at it. Bless you.

I totally understand why you might be offended Liz although I was not using a Bible. I have 2 vintage books converted into art journals that I am working in right now, one is called "The Family Mark Twain" and the other is "A Quarto Of Modern Literature". I'm not sure which one had the Apostle Paul in the title. I respect your decision not to watch my videos but I wanted to let you accurately know the titles of the books I am using.

@@keener57 Thank you for your kind response and for stepping into my defense although I was not actually using a Bible (see my reply below). I agree that if I had been using a Bible I don't think Jesus would be offended but that is just my personal opinion. Many people do not like the fact that I convert any book into an art journal so I feel like unintentionally I'm offending people just by using a discarded book--as you said "even though it's saved from the landfill". Thanks again!
