Small round smooth pebble/rock and a piece of bankline will do the same thing. Tie a poachers knot push the rock from the inside out, tie cord around rock and tarp pull snug and tie off working end.

Pretty smart mod and tailored to the season. Until Dave showed some other mods they teach I don't think I would have thought about modifying the tarp ahead of time , rather than reactive repairing the tarp .

I have some pathfinder gear but, this is one product I'm just not sure I want to spend money on. I mean if you compare to a 99 cent space blanket I'm sure it's great, but when you compare it to a tarp not so much. I've seen Dave reinforce the corners and edges also in a video. I realize someone can only get what they can get but just seems like a piece of junk and even though it's better than nothing or a 99 cent blanket not sure it should be sold as pathfinder gear which seems to promote very dependable and durable gear. Thanks for the video Blackie!

There is a tape used to repair sails that is the most aggressive, strongest tape I’ve ever used. I think the brand Tenacious Tape is a similar product. I love duct tape but it will pull off eventually, especially at 95 degrees and 98% humidity!

We always have used Fiberglass reinforced packing tape , that stuff is incredibly sticky, you have to have a blade to cut it as you cannot rip it with your hands. We also got a half Roll of heavy duty Visqueen afew yrs back an divided up so everyone had their own personal shelter & separate ground cloth , an put the remaining roll in the main supply hut .

@@paulrooster2108 I’m familiar with the packing tape, strong stuff indeed. But the tape I’m talking about I used to plaster a hole in my uniform where unbeknownst to me my pocket knife had worn a hole through it! I put this tape on it and survived unscathed through the washing machine and wearing it daily. I was shocked!

Hi Blackie, greeting from Australia 🇦🇺 thank you for your time to make these videos . There is an easer way using any cordage , get the required length you want , even it up and put a Alpine Butterfly knot in centre you then do overhand knots down each side. This knot is used making permanent bights in cordage. It is a substitute for a permanent loop , with a soft shackel , you can use it also on haversack. Using mule tape sewing it on to permanent loops, cnr tarpaulins, etc, there are other things I use it for. What are your thoughts please let me know. Thank you.

Great video Blackie, Dave did a video on modding these to have even more support awhile ago reenforced the edges with Duck tape poked a hole through with an awl we’re grommets we’re and ran #36 bank line through. Doing that as well would make this an even more sturdy piece of gear I’d imagine.

I assume you are doing this with tape instead of a penny or a pebble. Because the tarp material would be damaged by the traditional penny mod.
@jamesbowen5573

I don't like that string method. I use a quarter sized washer with about a 1/4 inch inside hole. Cut off about 8 inches of gorilla tape find the middle, and place the edge of the washer a 1/16 inch from center with the washers main body away from the center. Then I fold the tape over the washer keeping it lined up with itself and sticking it together around the washer and about an inch or so past the washer. Leaving the last 2-3 inches of tape open. Then I place the tape where I want it to go. One sticky side at a time. I can aways add another layer of tape over this flap if I want it stuck on more with tape. I can even place tape across the ends, and on either side of the flap making a square for better Anchorage. Then you cut an X in the center of the washer tape. Or melt it though. Now you have a firm grommet. -anywhere you want. I have done this on clear plastic sheets for a super shelter cut to match my tarp with side flaps. Then tape around the edges to prevent rips. You can literally make cheap easy plastic tarps that weigh nothing for less than a dollar. I've even done this to mylar blankets. A grommet on every corner, the middle of all 4 sides, and the middle of the back for a pull out tether. I usually make paracord loops the usual side like alot of people use for easy use of stakes or toggles. These things last alot longer than some store bought tarps I've bought. Of course leaving it in sunlight for weeks will make the plastic fall apart I'm sure. I've never just left them up. I made one out of black plastic and cut a mylar blanket to match it. Used the tape around the edges. One piece folded over all the way around. And a piece in the middle folded over sticky sides out between them. That way it had a hot side and a cold side like the one in the video. Only it only cost a couple of bucks.
