Finishing off, How to paint landscape and clouds, using oils. I'm using a new camera and I'm not quite getting the focus right. Apologies for that.
Colours used: Sap Green, Red Ochre, Pthalo Blue, Royal Blue, Titanium White, and Payne's Grey.

I enjoyed seeing the complete picture, no pun intended, of you and your studio. I have always appreciated how you begin a painting, but today I learned more than other times for two reasons (1) your real time discussion and sharing of your thought process and (2) the discussion of what you want to fix and how to improve. Very educational. Thank you. Dee

An absolutely fantastic tutorial Stuart, you have such a wonderful way of conveying a simple logic with your gorgeous voice, and you’ve really taught me so much, my sky paintings have come on leaps & bounds since watching your amazing tutorials, you’re a brilliant teacher, thank you so very much, and your painting here is beautiful too... I’m still learning so I’ll still be watching you constantly... Looking forward to your next video with eager anticipation..

Your sky and clouds are so beautiful. Really. I'm sick of those cotton clouds that we see all the time. I grew up in North Africa and I can tell you that your paintings are a perfect representation of my childhood landscapes. I recognize the sky and even the fields.

One of the things I love about your paintings is the care free way that nothing is difficult about it. If you don’t like something, change it. No panic needed. Seeing the cat is nice too. This kind of landscape reminds me of Yorkshire. The kind of scene you see at the start of the Yorkshire vet episodes of “All Creatures Grunt and Smell” (oops…All Creatures Great and Small 😂).

Thank you for another helpful painting! I started your technique tonight for the first time after a very stressful day. I kept telling myself, “No fear, be bold, play around with it.” If you don’t like it, wipe it off.” So I got completely caught up into it and my stress dissolved. I did wipe off a lot and saved some for glazing which I have never done before. Looking forward to more of your videos. You are such a kind soul to share your knowledge with us.

Nice to see u sir! I wish we could all stop by for some cheese, fruit and wine, and discuss styles and history! I so enjoy ur history and all ur work! I find ur style very challenging and rewarding when I keep with it. Plywood has gotten quite expensive here in the coast of SC. I think it has to do with the status of hurricanes and our home owners insurances demanding a certain number and thickness of plywood...so here we are! Thank you for all the wonderful instructions and demos. Take care and be safe sir.

Lovely to see how you work and your work in progress etc. I adore the tree paintings, so magical! I was surprised to see that your studio is much smaller than I expected considering you paint large canvasses but everything in its place and why it's probably so functional. Love the creamy,whispy sky on the end painting, i like the highlights in the clouds as they are dissolving away, very pretty effect contrasting against the blue & greens.

Although, I am sure my daughter has other ideas! One tip I can give you with regards to taking the video, please set your recording device to manual and not auto focus. In this way it will prevent it from refocusing when you zoom in. Thanks for sharing your video and look forward to more!

Stuart can you tell us what you use to hang the boards on your walls. I use wire on canvases but a 5 mm plywood, I would be hesitant of the screw on a hinge coming through the surface. The weight of the board would dictate heavier hardware. I would think. Another great video and I would encourage anyone who can afford to become a Patron on Patreon as you are very generous with your knowledge and talent.

Thanks, George! My paintings are mostly in racks and not on the walls. When I sell a painting, I suggest a reasonably chunky frame and the hooks are attached to that, not the actual painting.

Stuart Davies well Bob Ross just visited a PBS station in Muncie Indiana and pitched an idea. None of the artist on PBS here get paid. They make their money by selling DVD’s, paints, supplies, books. Somebody out there in your viewing audience may have a connection. Getting on one station is a start. I read the story how Bob Ross started. You would probably have to edit your shows to 30 minutes or less, then divided into parts, segments (paintings). Parts I,II, III, etc. You have great presentation and your work is wonderful. You are made for TV.

Thanks for the little tour of the studio - mine's untidy too. Just one point about your videoing, although the new camera is clearly an improvement, it does automatically adjust for light intensity and the detail of the painting darkens when you move in front of the camera whilst wearing a very light coloured shirt. How much do you think this would be reduced if you wear a dark shirt? Are you also able to fix the focus on the painting rather than allow the camera to auto-focus on you as you move in front of your work? I too wondered about your change from linseed oil to alkyd. Does it have to do with drying times or the finished effect each has on your paintings? I still use linseed but I add my own siccative in varying amounts depending on how quickly I want it to dry. Another interesting and educational edition, Stuart, thank you for all you have shown us over the years.

I feel guilty now, I always seem to have a dozen paintings going at 1 time for every reason under the sun. Run out of paint or I'm not happy with the direction and have to ponder it a while, or I just want to get a good base of a painting going.. so I don't forget the style I had in mind, or a list of various reasons. Eventually i finish one, then I am banging on with a new one. it is a vicious cycle. I read in a psychology magazine, that an artists mind is forever working and must be cluttered in order to reach maximum heights of ones ability. Even if it isn't true,, I'm sticking with it anyway. Also that no painting is ever completed, it is simply on pause. lol

Stuart, I really like the style of your painting and love the finished result. I realise you are mainly working from your own imagination but do you ever paint a real landscape and if so, how do you go about it? Also have you painted any seascapes?
@StuartDavies
@StuartDavies 3 жыл бұрын
When I was much younger I tended to paint from what I observed. Now, it's all from my imagination. I haven't painted many seascapes - perhaps I should paint a few more!
