I was married to my Polish husband for 47 years and he taught me this dish the first week we were married. We always had them with some baked ham slices and ALWAYS served with applesauce and sour cream. He passed away in 2017 and every time I make this most favorite dish, I remember how much fun I had learning to cook new foods. Thanks, Jenny, for sharing your recipes with us. And for reminding me how much I love cooking even at age 72. 🥹❤️

Thanks for posting this Jenny. We had a family friend from Ukraine, her husband was Polish, so she used to cook a lot of stuff he wanted, and she used to let me help her make plackis about 40 years ago when I was like 7. I would help her hand-grate the potatoes and onions (one time cutting my hand, ugh) and she would melt the butter in the pan. The smell while they were cooking was unreal, and I'll never forget that and the taste of them. I attempted to make them recently and while they were not exactly like she made them, the flavour took me right right back to when I was a kid. Your method of draining the water for 5 minutes and putting the starch back in makes total sense, and i think I can now better replicate the ones she made because of that. By the way, if anyone actually read down this far, they are pronounced plat-skis !!

I can't tell you how thankful I am for this recipe. My mum made THE BEST potato pancakes, but I'm approaching 20 years without her, and 33 years+ without her making them for our family. She was Ukrainian, and this recipe is almost exactly hers with one major important difference that I can't wait to try- the 5 min drain through the strainer. I have not been able to for figure out why mine are so watery and greasy. I would use more oil because of the watery batter. Now I know what to do!! I am trying this tomorrow. Thank you and God bless you!

Hi Jenny, firstly a BIG thank you for showing us all of those wonderful Polish dishes. I’m Polish and it’s really nice to see some Polish recipes. Secondly, my grandma used to make those pancakes very often. She always grated the potatoes and onions on a grater. And she fried them really thin. So they were incredibly crispy and thin. We ate them for dinner either with sour cream and chives or with sugar. From where I am we call them placki ziemniaczane. Actually, I haven’t made them in a really long time. You inspired me to. Thanks once again!

Thank you! My husband and I both grew up having these as part of our regular mealtimes and loved them. After several attempts with no real success we were frustrated beyond belief. While we had the recipe we somehow managed to never been allowed to help beyond grating the potatoes and onion and as a result we were missing one step. We weren't adding the potato starch back in and as a result they wouldn't fry properly. We tried adding a little more flour, a little more of liquid back in and even tried an extra egg all with no success, it never even occured to me to add starch back in, even though I was aware it separated from the water when I did the clean up,. Thank you again, we're so happy to be able to add them to the menu rotation for our family. 😊

Thanks Jenny, those look great. Growing up, my Polish dad never used to drain the water, I like the looks w/o the water. Me and my 4 brothers used to do all the grating and by the time we were done, a lot of the potatoes would be brown, lol. But my mom used to fry these and we would eat them as they came out and she could barely keep up!! Loved these. (We also used sour cream, but lately I have found that plain yogurt tastes just like sour cream but is healthier, I will have to try it on these. Thanks again, hope you are staying safe!

Just made these exact to your recipe. I swept a tiny bit of creme fraich over the polish pancakes (I know but this is a treat!), then topped it with an over easy egg, then dribbled a sauce mixture of a dallop of mayo, saracha and dijon sauce mixed together over the egg, then scattered fried Portuguese sausage slithers all around. I ate an unbelievably delicous international breakfast... for dinner!

Jenny: I'm part Polish and when I was little, my aunt and mother used to make these, similar to yours (theirs were more liquid-y, hence thinner pancakes), and we used to sprinkle sugar on them after they were cooked! I wonder if your Polish family ever did that too. They were so delicious, but the MEMORY I have of when I was young is even better than the potato pancakes. (We'd have them on Fridays, along with a platter of Tuna sandwiches that my aunt would make for those who didn't want the potato pancakes!) Take care and hope you had a good Easter. Best, Gloria

We always put a tsp of cottage cheese on top of each one or a slice of cream cheese in between. Either way it is excellent. I love it with more grease and my husband likes it the way you make it Jenny. So I will try your way. My mother came over here on a boat and they just found a trunk that her family used and it had Auschwitz on it. She is pure blooded Polish but all of my life I never knew anything about my grandparents or her family. She had four brothers and her mother (my grandparents died from the boat ride I guess. )If they had not found that trunk I would know nothing.

Wow, exactly as I remember "Kartoffelpuffer" from my childhood in Germany except this method is so much easier - I belong to the generation that used a shredder and many a knuckle turned bloody whilst preparing the potatoes. In my family this was traditionally served with applesauce. Also, the addition of a little chopped parsley to the dough before frying is very nice. I particularly like the small amount of oil used, the taste is better and your heart will thank you. I'm seriously impressed, thank you Jenny

This is one of those recipes that I thought was too simple to have very much taste to them, I couldn't have been more wrong, these could just about bring on world peace. Not only are they fast and delicious, but they also take on other flavors to only make them better. I made these last year at the Christmas breakfast I hold for my employees. I made some by adding chopped bacon, chopped ham, ham and cheese, jalapeno ham and cheese, you get the idea. They were gone before the steak was, and it was Kobe beef. I have been wondering how these would turn out using sweet potatoes because sweet potatoes have a lot less starch in them than a Russet has. These Magnificently simple and far more delicious than the Hungry Jack boxes you find sitting in a box in the grocery store, and these literally cost pennies to make.

I have enjoyed every video of yours I ever seen, Jenny. Nice work. Thank you. Just my opinion but Corn oil and Canola oil ARE made from Round Up ready GMO crops. I won't have them in my house, let alone cook with them. For frying, restaurants use them so now I eat out way less. Which works for me, I prefer to do all my own cooking anyway, so I know what is in my food, thank you very much. Olive, peanut and grape seed oils is not GMO, yet, So that's all I use for cooking oils. Grape seed oil is good for high temperatures.

Thank God, and science, for GMO foods. Now far fewer people starve to death each year on this planet. I'm happy to eat them all.
