If you have had it not work even one time than it is what you have done wrong that caused the failure. Either your hole for the RivNut is to large or you have not kept the RivNut bottomed out into the hole while the nut crushes down during tightening . I have used this method many times, this is a very basic mechanical process, done as shown here the bolt “exactly” replicates the tools action.

Yes I know, it's a standard size hole in the bracket, but I have done many inserts in van builds in the past. After installation I really had to put force on them and they Al hold up good. Drilling the exact size is better so it won't spin of course. You have a good point there.

You do not need to use a drill you can use any wrench or ratchet that fits the bolt. There is not a lot of force here, I have never once used a drill, it is just convenient and fast but not necessary at all. As a matter of fact the bolt method is often necessary because the actual tool which is bigger than a drill does not always fit into the needed space.

The issue isn’t the tool, the hole is too big making for a sloppy fit. Grade 8 hardware makes for a better tool. You will be less likely to get distortion from the washer. I usually chase the threads after installation as they tend to distort a little. Rim nuts are a great building tool. I recently used them to reattach the fenders on my wife’s Jeep after I Line-Xed them. The factory POM rivets tend to leave the fenders a bit loose, with riv nut attachments they are solid.
@DennisDIY
@DennisDIY 3 ай бұрын
I'm aware of that, thanks for mention it
@wirefeed3419
@wirefeed3419 3 ай бұрын
The distortion can be improved by using some lubrication on the threads and be careful Not to over tighten you just need to crush the nut and maybe a 1/4 turn more to lock it from turning. Don’t forget the fastener ( Bolt or stud with nut )will crush the RivNut even more if tightened hard enough. RivNuts are a great invention, Simple and easy, I have been using them for decades.

@general1977 3 ай бұрын
No. It's not the same. If you turn the bolt, you screw up the threads in the rivet nut. If you turn the hex nut, the bolt doesn't turn in the rivet nut and the threads of the rivet nut stay clean and nice. Just look at the threads in the video. Almost chewed up already, because the bolt was turning under heavy load. Holding the hex nut with the wrench is completely useless if you do it in the fashion that is shown in this video, by the way. In fact it's dangerous, because what has happened here, is that the bolt came tight on the hex nut first and then the wrench kicked back.

You can do exactly what you want by using a nut threaded onto the bolt then add the washers as shown here then tighten the Nut down instead of turning the bolt. The thread distortion can be minimized by using a good lubricant/ oil on the bolt threads, Also many people over tighten/Crush the RivNut. This is Not necessary, just crush the RivNut down then only Snug maybe a 1/4 turn more. Additionally the final fastener used can crush down further if it is tightened down hard.

If stripping , pulling out or distorting the threads happens then you are over tightening the RivNut, Or the hole is too large for the RivNut. The hole Must fit the RivNut Snugly no different than a normal rivet correct hole size is important. You do not need to crush down hard on either the steel or the aluminum, all that is needed is to set the crush down snugly then approximately 1/4 turn more. Any damage to the threads means you have unnecessarily over tightened.

I have a RivNut tool but does not fit all sizes,I have done this bolt method for years. So long as you use a normal grade decent quality bolt it works perfect with out any damage to the bolt. You don’t have to use a drill you can just as easily use a wrench to turn the bolt, there is not a lot of force here. The RivNut is steel but manufactured with a crush zone that allows it to crush and flare out the side to act like a rivet. This is a good video showing a cost effective way to set the nuts for someone that doesn’t want to have buy the tool for the occasional use.
