Easy Step By Step Gulgula (Fiji Indian Style)
Ingredients:
• 1 Cup Self - Raising Flour (Sifted)
• 1/2 Cup Raw Sugar ( Using White Sugar Gulgulas Burn Easily)
• Oil For Frying
• 1/4 Cup Milk
• 1/4 Cup Water
• 1 Ripe Banana
• 1/2 Tsp Cardamom Seeds Crushed (Elaichi)
• 2 Tbsp Desiccated Coconut
• 1/4 Cup Sultanas Washed and Drained (Optional)
Method:
1) Mash your banana using a fork and put it aside.
2) Take a big dish, sift in your self - raising flour using a sifter or strainer.
3) Add crushed cardamom, desiccated coconut and sugar and mix it well . Add sultanas and give it a quick mix.
4) Add water and milk and mix it well to combine using a spoon.
5) Add bananas and mix it again.
6) To fry the gulgulas, take a wok or frypan, add some oil, put it on low heat and heat it for 5 minutes. Make sure the heat is on low otherwise the gulgulas will brown very quickly on the outside and will be gooey in the centre.
7) Drop small amounts of batter into the oil by either using two teaspoons or your hands. To use a teaspoon, take a spoon full of batter, drop it into the oil by pushing it with the other spoon. To use your hands, take a small handfull of batter, drop small amounts into the oil. Turn them over when you start to see a brown colour around the bottom. Turn them frequently so they can cook evenly. It should take about 4 - 5 minutes per batch , take them out once you get the desired colour and drain them on some paper towel.
8) Serve them hot or cold.
9) Enjoy.
Tip:
1) Do not use white sugar for this recipe because the gulgulas will brown very quickly and by the time it is cooked through the gulgulas become black.
2) You can also make this recipe without the bananas as well. Just add extra 2 tablespoon of milk.
Left over gulgulas can be kept in a sealed container, in the fridge and eaten within 3 - 5 days

Hello Anita Ji 🙏🏻. Thank you so much from my heart 💙 for putting up this awesome recipe for gulgulas, which is my childhood favorite but could never make it. Whenever I visit mum in New Zealand, that's the first thing I humbly request, and it MUST have sultanas. Can't express my happiness that you provided by posting this 🙏🏻⚘🙏🏻💙🙏🏻. Keep up with the beautiful and easy to follow recipes. 💥 So super glad that I subscribed to your channel 💞

Dear Yogisha, Thank you for subscribing to my channel. You sound like me. I love sultanas in everything. I like to save some gulgulas so I can eat them cold the next day . You should try them. It tastes amazing. Just keep them in a sealed container on the bench top and have them with a cuppa. You can also omit the bananas as well. It is also one of my childhood favourites. Regards Anita.

Thanks for the idea. Banana ones are great too. First, I certainly will try the plain ones. Lol, sultanas are best part, I literally look for ones with sultanas 🤣

Dear Saba, You are welcome. Sorry to hear that you had trouble getting the shape right. At first don't worry about the shape. The beauty about gulgula is that every gulgula is different. Don't worry about the odd shapes, as long as it tastes good. If you want round shapes, try to use two tablespoons, Scoop some batter with one spoon and use the other spoon to scoop it from the first spoon and then drop it into the oil. Remember the oil can not be very hot. With practice you will get it right. Hope you and your family are well and keeping safe. Here in Queensland , thank God everything is under control with is virus at the moment, but who knows for how long? Regards Anita.

Dear D, You are welcome. Hope you will enjoy this recipe. There are so many variations with gulgula e.g. Like plain gulgula without coconut, sultanas and banana. I love eating left over gulgula's the next day as well but no matter how much gulgula I make, my family finishes them all on the same day. Keep safe. Regards Anita.

@@anitasguidetosimplecooking My grandparent's were from Uttar Pradesh in India; they came to the Caribbean in the 1800's. My parent's were born in the Caribbean and so am I. Presently I'm in Canada and am enjoying all your videos. We made our food and snacks in the Caribbean very similar but we used less spices; the reason, after the spices they brought from India were finished they had no choice than to used what was accessible in the Caribbean in those days. In the Caribbean sometimes we even called things by different names. I would love to learn how to make all those food and snacks that my grandparent's made in India. I'll be very happy if you can teach me everything that you know. I think that you're an excellent teacher; you've always explained and did everything in the simplest manner so I know that I can learn a lot from you! Can you please make and show us all the different types of Indian food and snacks that your grandmother and mother taught you? Thank you and God bless 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
