I see quite the guesses in the comment sections, and I feel like dropping some of my brain info for ya! First off, *Arpeggio* This refers to a chord played broken up going up, or down, or both ways, through the scales. Can be within one octave range, or more. Next up, *Glissando* This term refers to the sweeping of the piano notes. The best example is literally sweeping the piano from the lowest to highest note. doesn't have to be the lowest, or highest, but as long as you do the sweep range from a high range, that's that! *Strum* Although, it sounds like it can be most identifyied with what the homie Andrew tried to explain, strumming refers to sweeping up and down strings. Technically the piano does have strings, however, we play it by hitting hammers on them, rather than stroking the actual string with our fingers. It's more of a guitar term. I feel like the correct term that the homie Andrew is trying to say is Grace Note! *Grace Note(s)* is an extra note right before hitting the main key for the melody. The key doesn't have to pertain to the scale, or harmony. What's your thoughts peeps? Could it be a Grace Note?
@OmoiSenpai
@OmoiSenpai 6 жыл бұрын
Literally after posting this comment, and playing back the video, I noticed he was talking about chords, and playing it a bit afterwards. xP In FL Studio, that is a Strum Tool Option. Grace Note should work still, but there's another term that refers to chords called a *Rolled Chord.* It's a broken chord, but played very fast to feel like a whole pressed chord, if that makes sense.
@ciarfah
@ciarfah 6 жыл бұрын
Justin Omoi as in you play each note of the chord in rapid succession? Sounds plausible
@OmoiSenpai
@OmoiSenpai 6 жыл бұрын
For the Rolled Chords? Yep! :D With Arpeggio, it can be played fast like a Rolled Chord as well, but that would be an ongoing repeated sequence, rather than just once per chord hit.

Im pretty sure if it was written out on sheet music, it would be a glissando, not a grace note because he isn't doing anything in reference to the melody, because he isn't changing the notes he initially plays, hes just allowing them to be staggered. Maybe a strum, but grace notes change the note, generally a half step or whole step down from the intended note, and then slide up to it, not just sweep the chord, like a glissando. I'm going with glissando on this one.

@@kevindaupin4275 Yes, rolled chords are a subtype of arpeggio. Arpeggio being the supreme papa of all chord tones not being played all at once, broken or complete, in or out of tempo. Though I can understand why he didn't want to say arpeggio, because in modern production terminology, the word is always associated with a tempo-bound harmonic pattern that loops.

To those saying its glissando: a glissando is a full sweep up or down the keyboard, using each connecting note. It isn't a grace note, nor would it be notated as one (while that is possible). He's still playing chords...its not like he's playing a G, but just "throwing in" a C and E before it. You're still playing the full chord, so therefore, It's an arpeggiated chord. Not exactly an arpeggio, but- "An arpeggiated chord is a type of broken chord whose notes are played quickly in order as opposed to simultaneously; to give a chord a harp-like effect (arpa is Italian for “harp”)."

No. Fast rolls that are meant to occur almost instantaneously are not called arpeggios. It's arpeggiated if it's meant to coincide with certain beats with defined beat values; a fast roll is just a "roll". I'm sorry if "roll" doesn't sound "technical" enough for y'all but not every little thing in music has some fancy shmancy italian-sounding name okay?

1:48 *Arpeggiato* is the classical music term, the modern term is rolled chords. Not to be confused with *Arpeggio*, which is a linear broken chord pattern played up or down. Of course, now we appropriate the term to mean a broken chord of whatever sequence, thanks to modern synth arpeggiator modules. Grace note is the English term for both *Appoggiatura* and *Acciaccatura*, Acciaccatura (which means crushing) being the shortest grace note. *Glissando* is the Italian term for glide (direct translation)/slide/sweep-which calls for long strums on a harp. Not to be confused with *portamento*, which is a variable pitch slide. Looking at the piano roll there, only the fourth chord is played with arpeggiato. Even that one isn't exactly proper arpeggiato where you'd make it obvious. Those are just unquantized chord playing. Sure you can say "grace notes", and you sure can notate arpeggiato as grace notes, but that'd be a hell to notate.

Song Challenge: Make a rap using only these lyrics! * 'Twas the nizzle before Christmizzle, when all through the hizzle Not a creature was stirring, not even a mizzle; The stizzlings were hung by the chimnizzle with care, In hopes that St. Nizzlas, dawg, soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their bizzles, While visions of sizzle plums danced in their hizzles And mama in her 'kerchizzle, and I in my cap, Had just sizzled our brizzles for a long wizzle’s nap, When out on the lizzle there arose such a clatter, I sprizzled from my bizzle to see what was the matter. Awizzle to the windizzle I flew like a flash, Tore open the shizzles and threw up the sash. The mizzle on the brizzle of the new-fallen snizzle, Gave a lustre of middizzle to objects belizzle, When what to my wondizzling eyes did appear, But a miniature slizzle and eight tiny rein-deer, With a little old drizzle so lively and quizzle, I knew in a moment he must be St. Nizzle. More rapizzle than eagles his coursizzlers they came, And he whizzled, and shizzled, and called them by name: "Now, Dazzle! now, Dizzle! now Prizzle and Vizzle! On, Cizzle! on, Cuzzle! on, Drizzle and Blizzle! To the tizzle of the pizzle! to the tizzle of the wizzle! Now dizzle away! dizzle away! dizzle away izzle!” As lizzles that befizzle the wizzle hurricane fly, When they mizzle with an obstizzle, mizzle to the sky; So upizzle to the hizzletop the coursizzlers they flizzle With the slizzle full of toys, and St. Nizzlas too- And then, in a tizzling, I hizzle on the rizzle The prizzling and pizzling of each little hizzle. As I drew in my hizzle, and was tizzling arizzle, Down the chimnizzle St. Nizzlas came with a bizzle. He was drizzled all in fizzle, from his hizzle to his fizzle, And his clothes were all tizzled with ashes and sizzle; A bizzle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a pizzler just opening his pack. His eyes-how they twizzled! his dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nizzle like a cherry! His droll little mizzle was drawn up like a bow, And the bizzle on his chizzle was as whizzle as the snow; The stump of a pizzle he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke, it encizzled his hizzle like a wreath; He had a brizzle fizzle and a little round belly That shook when he laughed, like a bizzle fizzle jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jizzle old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spizzle of myself; A wizzle of his eye and a twizzle of his head Soon gave me to know I had nizzle to dread; He spoke not a wizzle, but went straight to his work, And fizzled all the stizzlings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his fizzler aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimnizzle he rose; He sprang to his slizzle, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the dizzle of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drizzle out of sight- “Happy Christmizzle to all, and to all a good night!” * I realize now thaa this may be a lot of words. Yo don't have to use all of them. Happy rapping!

In case you're interested, the song is a distorted version of a song he originally made for his video "CHAINSMOKERS vs NURSERY RHYMES - What makes a song cool?". You can only get the original version it if you follow him on Patreon, and it's called "VS" from the folder "mary".

I have a lyric that references that, and u just convinced me to keep it (even though I'm watching this 3 years after u uploaded) luv u sprinkle cat

Super helpful. Definitely playing with how many layers I can put together before it becomes garbage. Also the "brrrring" thing is called a roll and it's notated with a squiggly line going upwards with an arrow at the end of it.

it's called an arpeggiated chord, it looks like this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Music-arpeggio.svg (annoyingly Wikipedia groups this and standard arpeggios together for some reason, I would say they're a different thing entirely)

Arpeggios are only played in one way (up or down). These chords roll in several ways, so it is a strum.

I would say that the brrring thing is a rolled chord, and as long as the extra notes at 1:33 are chord tones, that is an arpeggiated sequence. Thanks for these videos, my guy. Helps me a lot with dipping my toes into the commercial music world.
