Four different cloud watercolor painting techniques. Easy techniques for painting clouds and skies with watercolours for beginners.

These videos are designed to give new students to this medium the basic skills needed to progress their watercolor painting.
In this episode we will cover four different skies with detailed step by step instructions. Each easy watercolor painting is then turned into a simple little landscape.
Painting 1: How to paint white fluffy clouds quickly.
Painting 2: Painting a sunset with watercolor.
Painting 3: A sunset with dark skies.
Painting 4: How to paint wispy clouds in a blue sky.
Other topics I talk about are, darkand light tones, birds and mixing colors.

Joe, you are amazing. Your so informative and detailed in your teaching. I think if i had 10 favorite instructors, you'd be my go-to guy. You have set the bar for everyone else. The other guy equal to you doesn't teach as you do. He's a silent painter, pretty but useless in teaching. Your insightful, useful, a master. I've painted in other media for many years, but am a fairly recent convert to watercolour: it was useful to me to see your different approaches to painting skies, first on dry paper, then on wet - I'd fallen for the idea that all watercolour skies should be painted wet in wet, and clearly that's not so. While I’m not a fan of wet in wet, bit of a control freak, I have been trying to figure out the best way to get wispy clouds. This is so far the best method I’ve run across and certainly adds to my sky options.

This video is so valuable to budding artists like me, where i am actually struggling with basics. I don't have words to describe that the methods incorporated are simple as well as satisfying that i have created something. Also, 3 or 4 examples of the same subject makes it very thorough and interesting. I really like the videos. I di this tutorial yesterday. Pretty good results on 1 and 4. Not so much on 2 & 3. I seem to be really good at backruns and cauliflowers! Too much water, not enough paint, and going back in before things are completely dry. Lots to learn! I'm dating these and will continue to practice and hopefully improve. Thank you again for a very helpful series of lessons.

Glad you are finding my videos helpful Cathy. One of the main reasons for backruns and cauliflowers to happen is when your your brush is wetter than the damp paper. Try reducing the amount of paint in your brush, or use thicker paint when going back into damp paper. I will have to produce a video on backruns and cauliflowers in the future. Hard to cover it all in comments. :-( Enjoy the rest of the videos. :-)

I am really enjoying and getting a lot out of this series. Thank you! I have attempted watercolor on my own, with much frustration, but this series is finally making things click. I have spent the summer playing with triads, and would love to learn more about them. What makes a successful triad and how does one go about choosing which one to work with?

I am very happy you are getting some assistance from this series. As I am primarily a tonal artist, I haven't concentrated on colours so much, other than playing with complementary and harmonious color schemes. I will give some thought to producing something with triads in the future. In the end it is most important to get your basics fully understood, as that will make more complex subject easier to handle.

Happened onto your videos in a roundabout manner. First found Tim Wilmot in Bristol UK online. One of his influences was J Zbukvic. Bought all the Zbukvic videos and have watched those several times. Then was searching for an outdoor easel like he had. Not available. But your homemade easel popped up and I made one similar. And then I was onto your site. Bought your mastering Watercolor book. Did a few demos out of that and now Doing your beginner series. I first do one as you do it, then three more changing it up a bit. Theme and variations. Anyway, I’m self taught over the last 25 years starting in acrylics, then oils, and now watercolor. Having fun. Thanks again. One question: I find when I’m mixing paint it sucks up into my brush (red sable) and leaves very little on the pallet. Not much of a pool. I’m trying to get a rich mixture but difficult to see what I’m doing. If I add water it just dilutes it. Any tips on making that easier?

@@dearnest131 Hi Dave, I am a big fan of Joseph Zbukvic too, in fact he was the cause of me taking on a full time career in art. Thanks for purchasing my book by the way. If your brush is sucking up all the paint, it just means that you are not mixing anywhere near enough paint. If you have a look at my latest video and fast forward to where I mix some of my initial colours you will see just how much paint I mix. Here is the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/psV3q7OGq8icg2w.html A good tip is to work out how much paint you need and then double it. Especially with your initial washes - you will usually end up using those colours in the rest of you painting anyway.

Hi Joe. Yes I see what you mean about mixing lots of paint. Thanks. And great job with that painting. On a different technical note: When you cut over to your camera on the left of you, its a bit disorienting. Maybe you do it because your head got in the main shot or something. But I'd just keep it to one camera. Just a thought. I've done audio for countless commercials, so I tend to notice these things. Well I've made it through doing both the color wheels. Very good exercises in learning how my colors react. I'm using Winsor Red, Cad Yellow Lt, (M. Graham) and French Ult. so its a bit different. I'm using the M Graham because of using it after reading Quillers Color Choices if I remember correctly. I still have a tube so I use it. :-) On to #10 the Old Farm. And yes, Z blows me away with his looseness, yet controlled style. Same with you. although a little less loose. Just good in a different way. More color. Learning a lot. Thanks again!

Generally I do not wet my paper first Daphne. My board is at 15 degrees.

Oh my gosh! Just a few strokes and it looked already amazing! I wish i could do that. I’ll practice. Do you suggest any sketchbook for watercolor? I’ve tried some but they are goo for just a single wash or so. I like to keep all my practice in one -place instead of loose pages. Any suggestions? Thx

I only use sketch books for travel. It is best to use seperate sheets of paper that you can keep in a folder or large zip lock back - if you want to keep them together. Moleskine make good watercolor sketchbooks for watercolor - not cheap however.

Thanks for these tutorials! I'm doing my best to be fast when doing the fluffy clouds, but when I go at it again with the clean and wet brush to diffuse the paint through the negative space that I have created, the paint is already dry and so I get marked overlays. If on the contrary I make the first layer too wet, I cannot get defined parts in the cloud or the little brush hairs don't separate from the body of the brush to get the fluffiness out of it. Could you please advise me? Thank you!

You're very welcome! When you have a brush that is very wet, you need to move it much faster to get the hairs to separate. Try painting on small paper until you get the technique right and then move to a bigger version. Remember, practice, observation, and adjustment, are critical to mastering watercolour. Good luck.

Once again Joe a very informative lesson and as soon as I get some Arches paper I'll be able to practice a lot more, but not sure as to the type to get, I paint on standard A4 size or smaller normally on 200gsm paper with no cotton content but am looking at getting either the 185gsm - the cheaper option (I'm guessing water control will be very important) or should I be looking at getting 300gsm ??. At the moment I'm using cheap paper which "warps & buckles" easily plus I am learn to use a new Neef 4750 brush which is a lot better than most of the brushes I have been using, but there is a learning curve with it. More practice and then a lot more - it's all fun though. Thanks again Joe for a fantastic lesson.

Glad you are enjoying it Grant. Arches 185 gsm rough is a good paper for you to use at the moment. As your skill level improves you can then move to the Cold Press version.

Size 12 Emmanuel. 8mm at ferrule and 29 mm hair length. Most of my clouds are done with this brush. :-)

I've never heard of this brush. Can you please tell me if it is synthetic or hair and maybe what it might compare to? My largest round brush is Robert Simmons Sapphire # 12 which I think is half and half. I also have a silver black velvet 3/4" oval. I love that "dragging action" you used! Can wait to test all my brushes for that.

Thank you Joe. I enjoyed trying the sunset a couple of times. The one with the thicker paint came out streaky without a smooth transition. Any suggestions?

Make sure your painting is at an angle, about 15 degrees should be enough. Next ensure you are painting with plenty of paint in your brush so that is flows down the paper. Also painting into the previous brushstroke about 1/4" so that the two merge together. Finally paint fast with a light touch so the paint doesn't dry before the next stroke.

Hi Joe, It seems to take me much longer than it does you to mix paint to the right consistency and color. What is the consistency of the paint in your pans? Are they fresh out of the tubes or do you let them dry out and then reactivate the paints with water? Thank you for all of your help. -

Hi Christina, I let my paint dry in my palatte before using it. It gets reactivated with my wet brush. If you are having trouble mixing paint to the right consistency make sure you are not accidently introducing more water into your mix as you pick up more paint. Yes, these types of clouds are very hard to do on hot pressed paper, goog luck. @@Flux_One

I used on for a little while when I first started but not any longer Andy. I find my round brushes hold more paint.

Yes, wet on dry. Otherwise you cannot keep the white areas.

A crystal clear tutorial Sir. Skies have always mystified me and you have helped me to unravel that on a paper with so much ease. I am slowly catching up on your colour mixing technique and it is amazing indeed. Can you please send me some landscape photos to practise and paint ? I will be obliged.
