The correct way to use a spray bottle is critical to keeping your watercolor painting at the right moisture level to allow you to paint without creating cauliflowers. This video explains the critical relationship between water and watercolor painting on the surface of your watercolor paper.
My PATREON MEMBERSHIP PAGE: www.patreon.com/user/membersh... - in addition to ad-free content you get exclusive content (new videos will be more in depth than those on my KZfaq channel), hi-resolution reference photos, photos of my finished painting, and drawing outlines where available. Other benefits are also included.
My teaching manual: Mastering Watercolors - A Practical Guide: amzn.to/3ZF2FRW
This is the 22st video in my beginner watercolor artist course.
If you are a beginner, and this is the first of my videos in this series you are watching, then I highly recommend that you go back and begin at Watercolor Class One and do the exercises in each. These exercises are what I used to put my beginner face-to-face students through, before allowing them to progress to more advanced subjects. Even now, before a student, new to watercolor, can join my online class they have to first prove they have studied and applied this beginner lessons. In this way, new students are able to more easily join my more advanced classes.
I also have a couple of watercolor painting books which I published and distribute through Amazon.
The first one, which has sold over 10,000 copies is bascially my teaching manual and is titled:
Mastering Watercolors - A Practical Guide.
The second is full of step-by-step demonstrations and is titled: Watercolor Step By Step: amzn.to/3z4YXEu
Both books are available in kindle format and paperback.
You can also find a lot of useful information on my website: www.paintingwithwatercolors.com/

Thanks to KZfaq algorithms, I just "found" you and immediately subscribed. Water control is the most difficult part of watercolor to teach. Your stellar explanation (good on ya, mate!) of how to actually use the bottle properly is a prime example of excellent teaching. So many others just state. "Spray your paper to keep it wet" w/o explaining technique. Thanks ever so much for sharing your knowledge and talents with the world! BTW, we are in the US, but watch foreign content nearly exclusively. Loved the Aussie ones, "A Place to Call Home", "My Life is Murder", "Jack Irish" and many others.

Water, water everywhere but nary a lesson like this. Understanding how the water reacts is challenging, maybe because it's invisible. Using the tinted spray was invaluable. Thanks.

Brilliant technical video in layman's terms. I've seen an artist use a hairdressers misting bottle, a little more expensive but it holds more water and is easier to use especially if you have hand problems. Thanks for the vision of you in stockings 🤣 LOL

A hairdresser's misting bottle would be great. Glad you liked the video. Took me a while to figure out an easy to understand explaination without getting into the science of it all. Sorry about the stockings vision. :-)

Wonderful lesson again, Joe! You are an amazing teacher. I would have never thought to use the spray bottle perpendicular to the paper! At 11:48 did you mask the brown islands before painting the water or did you just paint around them?

Sir, You prewet the watercolor paper on the back and the front. Is there a difference in prewetting when using 300lb paper as compared to your prewetting 140lb papers in your videos? Thank you. Regards, Richard
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright Жыл бұрын
I mostly just pre-wet the back. And yes, 300lb paper will take twice as much wetting at 140 lb paper. You wet till the paper sits very flat on your board, but is not wet on the front (except for special occassions). The demonstration in this video was done before I started wetting the back of my watercolor paper.
@ravimuley6634
@ravimuley6634 Жыл бұрын
It has been very helpful. However, I have a question. Suppose the background painting is finished and you want to continue painting on the foreground, by keeping it wet using the spray bottle , would you not spoil the background?
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright Жыл бұрын
If the background is dry, just cover it with a piece of paper while working on the foreground - if you will be working on the foreground for a long time. If the background is dry and you will only be working on the foreground for a little while then you may not even need to cover the background as the "totally" dry paint should not be affected. Try it out on an old failed painting first.
