Continuing the1939 Hudson Big Boy Rat Rod build, we look at an easy way to determine the diff ratio of an open differential. No need to take things apart! We also calculate road speed for specific engine rpm, and look at the factors that affect this.

Getting ready to retire, not sure if I'll go back to building 1/4 milers, it's what I cut my wrenching teeth on back in the 70's ... or do a buncha traveling. Cricket was great, my Team (NZ) won.. your Video was also great... in 1/4 mile racing, the calculations you showed are imperative to learn. In conjunction with the rpm/torque/horsepower curve, which you can then estimate jet sizes, timing curve etc... Been a long time since I had to think about that stuff... thanks for brushing off some of the cobwebs!

I enjoyed this mental exercise. I may wrong on dates & numbers but, 3 years ago 80% of the high school students who graduated Boston public schools could not tell time on an "Analog" clock! I guess is, they won't be able to get to work on time, be too late for dinner and miss the buss to see their girlfriend. This is sad! But without looking, 88km = 55MPH. Best of luck finding a differential with a ration below 3:1 that fits. Or perhaps some 2 meter wheels w / tires! 😮❤

That is the first time I seen someone double the pinion rotation. I had a 64 Plymouth with a 2.76 rear gear ratio. When I spun the wheel around, the pinion went around 2 and about 3/4. So that showed a 2.76. I can’t remember the rpm to mph. Great video. I like it that you go through your thought process. It really helps out. Good luck finding what you want. I too am looking for another ratio for my Falcon. I want a 2.79 out of a 70’s Ford Maverick. That will give me a 5 lug pattern too. 👍🏻👍🏻!!!!
@ratrodsafrica
@ratrodsafrica Жыл бұрын
If it's an open diff and one wheel is stationary, you have to double it. Further proof is in the fact my answer correlates with diff ratios provided by Isuzu. They never made a diff with 2.something ratio.🙂

@@ratrodsafrica hey my brother, would you happen to know an equation to be able to choose the right combination of tire diameter and gear ratio to be able to cruise in my ‘61 Falcon at 70, where it would be most efficient for my engine? It has a stock 200cid (3.3lit) straight 6 cylinder backed by a C-4 automatic transmission. No overdrive. Right now it has 23” tires, and 3.10 gear ratio. The RPMs are pretty high doing 60. I do plan to go to around 27” tires. That will get the RPMs down some, but still in the upper 2000s. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
@ratrodsafrica
@ratrodsafrica Жыл бұрын
@@DoonerF what rpms would you like to have when cruising at 70?
@DoonerF
@DoonerF Жыл бұрын
@@ratrodsafrica that’s where I’m really not sure. In my experiences with vehicles with automatic transmissions that have a 1:1 final gear, I want to be as close to 2000 rpm as possible. And I’m concerned with the power of the engine, whether it will be in a decent fuel efficient range. I hope I’m making sense here. I’m starting to confuse myself. 🤣 Since I like the look of large diameter tires tucked under the fenders, I was hoping to go to a 27” diameter tire. And with that, I worried that if I go too low (numerical) of a gear, it might have a tough time turning them. Not looking to take off fast. This is a cruiser. What are your thoughts?

Div, where you a school teacher in your younger years? LOL! Great explanation and demonstration on finding and calculating gear ratios. Keep it coming brother!

Hi Diff, I had a HG Holden V8. It had a 2.89 diff ratio and was great cruising speeds. I think was around the seventies. Might be too weak for a 351. you might have to look at a Ford 9 inch centre diff.

I reckon a Holden diff will be good enough. Not building a dragster 🙂

The old Holden had 2.89 and I then put a 3.08 into it. For memory, I think the ratio is stamped on the yoke. Input yoke.

I have always just seen it done by counting teeth in the diff and dividing. Maybe I am wrong but I think your diff is about 2.73-1 ...Lekka Boet

Transmission is 1/1 but the torque converter doesn’t lock up so you never get a true 1/1.

Lets try this again . Stacked transmitons one forward one backward . Lets say a standard 4 speed no overdrive backwards gives you a overdrive the ratio of the gear reduction for 3 gear . 2nd the same making a double overdrive . Their are vidios on this . From what i can see they added a pillow block to the pilet shaft and used a old clutch they machined down to fit the drivline and welded it in . Tractors run stacked tranys for underdrives, my 1 truck had stacked tranys had a winser 3 speed 22 %over with 50 %under. If you use a trany with overdrive the overdrive becomes a underdrive . Theirs tons of options .

All depends on application and what you want to achieve. Why would I want to get that complicated in my case?🤔

Here's the formula for calculating gear ratio: (RPM x Tire Diameter Inches) / (Final Drive Ratio x Transmission Gear Ratio x 336) = Actual numerical gear ratio to the ground from every revolution of the engine

That's almost how I do it too. I have the wife rotating the tire 20 turns (other wheel on the floor). So if the prop shaft turns 34-and-a-bit, I know I probably have a 3.42:1 rear end ratio

Yeah, that will work too! Think my wife will lose track though😂

Div with the C4 the engine should be 1500 rpms at 55mph or 88.5 km/h using 3:73 gears depending on tire size.
@ratrodsafrica
@ratrodsafrica Жыл бұрын
My calcs say you would need about 40" tyres to get the numbers above! C4 doesn't have overdrive, so final ratio there is 1:1

Hi Div. I like this Hudson truck you are working on now. So far , it is my favorite. I am working on my 54 Chevy aka Ol'Beater. I have a question. My door vent windows are terrible. Replacements are very expensive. I am toying with the Idea of converting them to one piece glass. Have you ever done this?. Do you have any Ideas?. Keep on Trucking...love your channel. JB

I just bought a 1964 f250. The previous owner was originally from South Africa. He didn't admit to knowing you. He obviously didn't deserve to keep the truck.
