I might not be understanding you. but either way I'm going to need to expand the neck. I'm using 6.5 brass. I'll try to give it a shot your way. thanks for the input.

@@pewpewplayground So I just looked at the specs for the cases and I am not sure what I suggested will work like I thought it would. I was thinking that the total length of the 8.6 brass was shorter than the shoulder of the 6.5 brass, but it is not. Sorry for the mix up. I was planning on doing my brass the way that I mentioned, but I am thinking I will have to do it the way you are.

maker bullets has the load data. I would use what their web sight says. I used their data. with the KZfaq rules and liability I just dont want to state load data. but its out there and easy to find look under 8.6 bullets on makers websight . also faxon has load data and if you cross reference that data with the maker data you might be able to find more powders that would work . that's what I'm doing because I can not easily get the powder faxons data requires. be safe hope that helps.

That info isn’t on the Makers site anymore. I am not asking for complete load data but would appreciate knowing what powder you were using. The Faxon data is very limited.

yes I think your 308 brass should work. only one way to find out. I also should have tried a few pieces of 308 but Ioad for 308 so I just got new 6.5 because the info I had said 6.5 was that better choice. but maybe I try some 308 brass

You read my mind. Why not just cut out a few steps and use 308 brass. Plus, it’s way cheaper and easier to find that 6.5. So supposedly 6.5 converted brass seems to size better. I’ll have to take some measurements, but maybe the 6.5 brass is just a few tho thinner case wall thickness.

I’ve been playing with different brass types. The LC 308 brass I used had 2 grains less capacity than Hornady brass and the necks needed to be turned down. Hornady brass seems to be about .010” and resized LC 308 ends up around .015”. I also tried resizing 6.5 creedmoor brass from Lapua, Peterson and S&B. The S&B had the closest case capacity to the Hornady, the others closer to LC 308. All needed their necks turned to properly fit in the chamber.

@@therevoman good to know thanks! I was curious if 308 brass was going to be thicker. Same thing happened when converting some 5.56 brass into 300 blk.

@@therevoman I wonder if a small base die would solve that issue with thicker brass? Just something else to try. It would be nice to be able to use 308 brass since it’s a lot cheaper than 6.5 brass.

Because the final interior volume of the case will be all wrong (too small) if you start with .308 brass

yes you can start with 308 brass. I don't like using it because it takes much more force then the 6.5 brass but if that's what you have and can get 308 works. I think it takes more force because the shoulder is very heavy and you are basically making the shoulder into the neck. you might have to turn the neck down with some 308. this is of course on my press with my dies (lee).
