Easy Way To Teach Writing / Homeschool Writing Lessons / Help Struggling Writers
We are a homeschooling family with five kids at home, six kids total. Our channel is about large family life, homeschooling, and finding the blessing in everyday. I am currently homeschooling a teenager, two elementary aged children and a preschooler. (I am also homeschooling our toddler-but some people don’t consider that homeschool-I do!)
Here on our channel I create a lot of homeschooling content. We are currently using The Good and The Beautiful curriculum for language arts and history.

Stop trying to force your kids to write a formal 5 paragraph paper. They hate it! It’s boring! There is a better way to go about it!
I got very close to losing my mind when it came to teaching my teenager how to write a five paragraph paper I would try so hard. I thought for sure there was something wrong with the way I was trying to teach him to write a simple paper.
I slowed down-we took baby steps.
I WAS WRITING HIS PAPERS!
While i was arguing with him the solution just came to me! I was impatiently answering that typical teenage question:
When am I ever going to use this?
You have to learn how to write a paper because its the key to good communication. You have to be able to explain your point in a way that people can understand.
How are you going to give a presentation or defend your point of view without knowing how to outline it and make it understandable?
BINGO!!!!
IN ORDER TO GIVE A PRESENTATION YOU NEEED TO WRITE A PAPER!
Stop fighting with your kids to write a 5 paragraph paper. Try inspiring them to give a preseentation instead. I think you’ll be surprised at how it turns out.

For math we are really enjoying teaching textbooks. I heard about teaching textbooks through some other amazing homeschooling mamas and we have really grown to love it.

I never learned how to write and I do find it very difficult to convey my thoughts to others, so now that I am homeschooling my own kids I know this is something that I definitely want them to learn! Also I really appreciated your last point about not correcting their paper grammatically because, like you said, we already have curriculum that covers grammar and spelling. I just want them to be able to get their ideas out of their heads in a clear way. And I will definitely let them know up front that I will not be grading their papers (at least in the beginning) just to take the pressure off and hopefully give them more freedom to relax and have fun with it!

LOL! I actually got my boys to write a whole paragraph today! It would have ended in tears last year. This year they both did it in a very decent amount of time! Yes! Progress!

Oh my goodness. This was so helpful and you are so entertaining. I want to try your way with my reluctant writer son but not only is he a reluctant writer, he’s shy when it comes to presenting and speaking his thoughts.

This will help me with my 7yo autistic son when the time comes. He loves drawing, hands on activities and writing only if it interests him. Otherwise, it’s like pulling teeth! As for me, I had no issues writing papers in school so it’s hard to sometimes understand. But then my husband hated writing papers too but excels at anything math and technology related. I think we have to find that balance when homeschooling between mainstream school expectations and real world expectations.

Yes! As long as the concepts are the same it doesn’t matter how you get there.

Your timing was spot on, we are doing a credit for Highschool for both kids and I tear my hair down and cry 😭 because why do they force kids to write papers? Who cares for a 5 -10 paragraph paper????? I have done my best to advocate for my teens but the system won’t budge, presentations are so more fun and engaging and they can do it. We have tried doing it that way but by Highschool the structure does change a bit and it becomes exhausting. But you are so right we can get the point across in a different way.

Are you using a set curriculum or live in a state that requires standardized testing?

@@EverydayBlessings unfortunately for high school you have to follow a curriculum online so they can get their high school credits, they only allow accommodations for tests, nothing else, it is ridiculous I know

I just discovered your channel when searching for Time4Learning reviews. I watched that one and then clicked on this one. I'm a long time homeschooler, but I'm looking to change up the curriculum since my kids are getting older. My work hours have increased so I need help so my days don't feel like they're 40 hours long! How is Time4Learning for teaching writing at middle school level? I have boys who dislike writing, so I'm trying to make things easier. Thanks!

I will say it’s pretty standard. If they dislike writing it’s going to be a chore because anything to do with writing when you dislike it is not fun. The lessons are short though. It’s broken up really nicely. Writing is just one of those things you either love it or avoid it as much as possible. 😊. How long have you been homeschooling? Kuddos to yoy for homeschooling and working that is NOT easy!

Thank you. My son will greatly enjoy this method. We did a report already on sharks (his favorite animal) but I think we will go back and do the 3 points, board, and note cards.
