In this video I go over how I turned some run of the mill red oak into something that looks a lot more like white oak. The process is very easy and the end result is awesome. If you're looking to change your red oak into something that looks better, look no further.

In theory it should, however cherry tends to darken with age or sun exposure so that could be a factor

Holy hell, Nick. When you were applying the finish I thought it was making a bit of a difference, but when you placed the centre section back in, the difference was dramatic! Nice find and I liked the video format. Keep up the great work. As a side note, taking red oak versus white oak cost into account, plus time and finish, I’m curious what the overall cost difference is. I’m not asking actual prices you paid, because that’s none of my business, but I’m curious percentage wise. Cheers.

I was pretty surprised by the difference too! Thanks for watching! As far as the pricing difference goes, I did have to buy the precolor for $80 but that will be able to be used on a ton of more red oak. I’d say you’d be saving a decent amount if you could get the precolor easy in the 100ml size.

If you stop with the part A, can you use your own top coat to finish the piece after or are you stuck with using the part B?

The precolor is water based so after that completely dries you could use whatever top cost you want to finish it.

I just listened to your "shop sounds" podcast episode about video production. You have great voiceovers and good ambient shop sounds! Plus, your video style is very relaxing. I bet the customer was okay with it, but it sounded like you might have been trying to trick them into thinking it was white oak! 😉 Nice tip and great video!

White oak is a lot darker, but still, this looks way better than red oak!

Oh for sure, the cotton white makes it more white than normal white oak for sure.

White oak can be reddish or more white. Red oak can be exactly the same. The name doesn’t dictate the color. White oak has closed pores and red are open. Again the color has nothing to do with it as there are tons of species of both, but the best looking wood is definitely whiter white oak! I do like what the Rubio does to this red color, I did it to my sons bed last month.

You do realize read oak and white oak is less about the "color" than the porousness of the wood itself. Red oak is actually about the leaf color in the fall. White oak is non porous but can be red or white in tint, and read oak can be as white as white oak but you can take a small section and blow bubbles like a straw. But yes...when EITHER oak has a red tint...the Rubio White Mint can cancel out the redness.
