As a native English speaker who speaks a few languages I have mixed opinions about this. On the one hand it sometimes annoys me when people speak back to me in English. On the other hand I try not to force people to speak to me until I am confident I can speak at a reasonably adult level. It's not fair to treat people as unpaid conversation tutors. It can be very tiring trying to maintain a normal conversation with somebody whose language skills are pretty basic.
@timothydouglas9474

I agree with you; other people aren't unpaid language tutors and aren't obliged to speak their language with us. I think most of us are usually reasonable and can recognize when our skills in the local language skills aren't sufficient. I'm not annoyed when someone switches to English if I'm not good enough. Hence, we should develop a language learning method which allows us to improve our conversation skills independently of people we are not paying, e.g. language exchange. At the same time, we are not other people's unpaid English tutors; we have no obligation to speak English with them.

I'm German and here, people also switch to English. Any time someone has an accent, they switch to English, but I think that's pretty condescending. Thinking that just because someone has an accent, they don't speak German well enough and should change to English, who knows if they even speak English anyway? I only switch to English of the person asks me to

Daardoor komen wij elkaar tegemoet 🙂

As a learner of Dutch 🇳🇱 and native English speaker, I noticed the parts of Dutch that are similar to English and German. I went to the Netherlands in late 2022. Many of the Dutch people in cafes and restaurants would talk to me in Dutch. I’m just about learning to read and the grammar but not ready for conversations. 7:30

I found this happening less frequently since I moved to a suburb in Haarlemmermeer, and then being a little more confident using it in Amsterdam where they will usually ask if it's ok to stay in Dutch or switch. Good point. I wish more Dutch people were just like the first gentleman in the video and asked, but these are a minority in my experience. Also, in my experience, the VERY first time a Dutch person switches to English or addresses me in English, I have a discussion with them about WHY they are speaking to me in English. I'm happy to speak to the Dutch in English, AS LONG AS they are also willing to speak their language to me.

It’s a personal choice, I mean I do ask people in the Netherlands to speak Dutch to me but sometimes when I got something quick to do like I got no time I just go on with English but I try to make it less and less. So there is always a space to ask your language of preference if you reach a compromise with the person.

Yes. Like the gentleman was saying in the video. I was offered a job in the south of the Netherlands on the spur of the moment so I didn't know any Dutch. But trying to learn it while living and working over there was quite difficult because no matter where I went, when I tried to speak and practice my Dutch, it almost always got, 'oh I speak English, we speak English!', and then telling them I need to practice, they'd say. 'no we speak English'. It was the same in Germany whether I was in a big city, Mannheim, or small town, Freiburg.

That's unfortunate. Some people do give up on language learning because of "English-switchers". One Dutchman even told me (in English, of course) not to bother learning Dutch because it was too difficult and everyone would just switch to English. Which isn't true, in my experience (most people don't switch) and those who do switch to English are not the target audience; I don't learn a language for the minority who switch to English, but for the majority who are glad that I've learned their language

This is the specific reason that made me stop learning Dutch and learn a different language instead. Almost every Dutch person I ever talked to through apps wanted to practice their languages ONLY and not help with Dutch, and not only that, many were determined to NOT speak any Dutch, EVEN when addressed first and in good Dutch. I've learned many languages over the years and Dutch was by far my worst experience of all when it comes to speakers.

The Dutch being so accommodating to make conversation easier is a great thing for tourists, but yeah, if you're trying to practice and they just switch to English it really doesn't help. I've not yet been in that situation - I've only been to the Netherlands once, and my Dutch friend did all of the communication while we were there, but if I *was* in that situation and the person I was speaking to switched to English, I would probably try to keep responding in Dutch anyway. Not that my Dutch is anywhere near good enough to do that well at the moment, so I'd probably wait until I get a bit better before even trying!

In Afrikaans, it's even worse. English is the lingua franca of the country, so every Afrikaans speaker is also fluent in English these days. Many, many times before it has happened that I've had entire conversations with another person in English only to find later they are Afrikaans as well! As such, if I find the slightest hint that you aren't a native speaker of Afrikaans, it seems to be totally normal to switch to English even without asking.

You just reminded me of a time I went to Barcelona. I am English but also a teacher of Spanish. When I arrived I had to phone the owner of the airbnb we were staying at which I obviously did in Spanish. Then I met up with her and we had been chatting for about 5 mins before I realised she was actually Irish. Her Spanish was very good!! But we did feel a bit silly when we realised.

I find afrikaans people to be the opposite. The second I realise someone is afrikaans due to their accent we switch over. It feels wrong speaking English to afrikaans native speakers. I don't know why this is the case but it is. Unless there is someone there who isn't afrikaans and won't understand.

@@silverwatchdog of course, but that is only if you are both native speakers. Also, many people I deal with (myself included) need to speak English on a daily basis for work so the accents aren't that strong then.

Let's normalize speaking your native language with someone who learns your native language and is not showing any signs of wanting to switch to English! Honestly it feels rude and disrespectful to your efforts and gives you the feeling, that you are bad in speaking the language! It happened to me sometimes in Hungary, Hungarian being my second native language next to German, and I just have a slight German accent in this language, but still people switched to English and I just sad "Thank you, but I actually find it easier if we stick with Hungarian". But Germans and Dutch are more guilty of it I think.

But communication isn't just a pure exchange of information. Human language is a bit more complicated than that. Don't you think speaking the language of the place you're living in fluently means you're more likely to integrate/assimilate properly compared to someone who keeps using a foreign language?

It is quite boring when you try to speak a language and the natives speak to you in English. I understand when you don't have the choice : if the person doesn't speak enough well to be understood or understand. But if it is just to make the other feel that he is a foreigner (like in Italy or Canarias for example), I find it stupid.
