As a Colombian it is almost weirdly incredible for me to think that not many countries are as diverse as my country. Seen videos like this not only remind me that I grew up in a paradise of diversity but they also make me feel very proud of being Colombian. As a country that has been overshadowed by its complex political history for many years, it is amazing to see that we are moving forward. We’re moving to a phase of development and hopefully recognition.

As a Colombian, I thank you for coming to Colombia and showing the rest of the world what a truly wonderful place Colombia is. On a square meter basis, no country is more bio diverse. Colombia accounts for less than one percent of the Earth’s land mass but within our borders approximately 20 percent of all species are found. Brazil has more species but Brazil is 7x larger than Colombia. Fruit is ubiquitous in Colombia, there are fruit carts everywhere. Given the country’s vast number of ecosystems and climates, we can grow just about anything though not necessarily in great quantity. Lulo, also called naranjilla, is a member of the nightshade family. It is only found in Colombia and Ecuador. It is primarily consumed as a juice. The fruit contains a higher amount of vitamin C than any citrus and more amino acids than any other fruit on the planet. You drink a glass of lulo and it is instant energy and refreshment.

Too bad you did this in Bogotá. Despite it is the best place to do this in the city, the city itself is not the most fruit-diverse place in the country. But it is a good glimpse and teaser of our fruit diversity anyway. I'm glad you liked it.

It tastes nothing like meat, though. It might look like fish meat, but its juicy and it smells sweet, and the taste is tangy and sweet at the same time, kinda like grapes or strawberries, but the flavour itself is unique, like most fruits'. I believe that fruit is called soursop in English. It's delicious. We also have 'Guanábana' milkshakes or smoothies, as well as ice cream and yogurt. Also, from the outside it looks like a green Durian, the super stinky asian fruit, but it's nothing like it. The scent is really pleasant and fruity. It's one of my all-time favourite fruits.

Sapote is a pain in the ass to peel but it's oh so sweet and satisfying. Granadilla you can open by smacking it against your forehead. Pitaya would not agree with my stomach but it's good if you're constipated lol. Mamomcillo is super portable and I would usually bring a bag of them in my lunchbox to school. BIG WARNING, I want to post this fast for everyone to read. DO NOT CHEW the seeds of the Pitaya (also known as yellow dragon fruit). This fruit is delicious but the seeds are known to be LAXATIVE. If this was posted already I feel it should be said again. Great show!!!. Love the reporting done by VOX.
@harriscout
@harriscout 5 жыл бұрын
That is factually not true. Dragonfruit (pitaya) seeds are eaten and chewed all the time, with no noticeable laxative effect, besides the normal effect from eating the fiber in any other fruit.

@@harriscout I am talking from personal experience. It was a matter of almost certainty, that if I bit on most of the seeds of the yellow version of this fruit (nothing with the red), while in my country, I would get a bad case of the runs. It may be anecdotal, to just me, or to the origin of the fruit and the soils that feed its plant. Or given that some of the oils that are contained in this seed are known to have laxative properties I have a stronger response to them than others. Would you risk it on a vacation trip?? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitaya

I think you're confused with the fruits, I'll give you their scientific names so there's no misconception between translations (even in Spanish, we have a lot of different names for the same fruit), Guanábana = Annona muricata, Ackee = Blighia sapida, Mamoncillo = Melicoccus bijugatus, Mangostino = Garcinia mangostana.

it's a different species but you're right. The yellow one is cheaper, has a stronger taste and it's more suited for exports as the red (asian one) is way more delicate and harder to grow.

The guanabana looked really similar to what we Indians usually call a custard apple and sapote was similar looking to an Indian sapota(chickoo). There is a high chance these fruits came to India via trade a long time ago along with tomatoes, potatoes and chillies

He obviously payed something for those fruits. But all of these are really cheap and you can buy a lot just with a few bucks. For example a big pineapple can cost a dollar or less. Though, have in mind that many fruits like lulos are consumed in juice, bot in water or milk and with some sugar, panela or stevia.
