El Pocito Restaurant and Tortilla Factory is actually tucked away behind the busy nightlife district in McAllen...
Getcha Some APC BBQ Rubs Here:
www.pitmaster.us/
Join the Pitmaster Class for 25% OFF:

and to get there you need to squeeze into the alley between 16th and 17th street to find their store front.
There you will find their menu painted right on the walls and you’ll be drawn inside by the delicious scent of fresh corn tortillas and gorditas prepared the traditional old school way - by using fresh nixtamalized corn. This is what gives El Pocito its signature and authentic flavor and part of what makes it an institution of McAllen.
Inside you will find the stuff that foodie dreams are made of - and while we decided what to order we also got to see the staff preparing the food right in front of us.
We tried some delicious gorditas filled with barbacoa, nopales and asado de puerco. For the tacos we had to go classic with papas con huevo and we revisited our childhood digging into delicious flour tortillas hot off the stove and slathered with butter! Oh man those are great memories! It’s easy to see why this humble store front has been serving the RGV community for more than a century.
What blew my mind the most about visiting El Pocito was the memories it brought back to me. Back when I was a young man working in McAllen there used to be a staircase that led to a basement where all the food was prepared and served - that’s where the name El Pocito came from. It was literally a hole in the wall that you had to climb into, and the eating experience today was just as good as I remembered.
Y’all buckle up and join me as we dive into El Pocito and all of the good food, and when you're done watching this video, I know you’re gonna be booking the next flight to McAllen, TX. Vamonos!

So many memories there! The first time for me was in 1979. When I joined the Air Force, my dad took me there before I left for basic training. The entrance was on the side. When we went in, my dad said, grab a seat ( they were like long picnic style tables) anywhere you want. Back then, they didn't have separate tables. My dad said, I brought you here specifically because once you leave, you're gonna have to sit next to strangers, this way you'll get a head start and it won't be such a shock. I sat next to a stranger with my dad, everyone there seemed very friendly. The best Carne guisada I've Ever had! No one had ever come close. Great job with this clip Arnie! Thanks!

This video took me back to both my grandma’s kitchens growing up. Waiting for the tortillas to come off the griddle and smothering with butter and homemade strawberry jam. If we were lucky there would be fresh chicharrones after they slaughtered a hog. And there was always beans cooking on the stove. We weren’t rich but we ate well and with love.
@ziggybender9125
@ziggybender9125 Жыл бұрын
Do you still cook beans for your family? Did you know beans are actually a ridiculously easy vine plant to grow? You can literally plant store bought dry beans and grow them the seeds last so long. It's not rich eating but there's something far more wholesome about growing and cooking your own beans.

Hi Arnie. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful video. I grew up in McAllen, Texas . I moved away more than 30 years ago. I remember going to El Pocito for fresh, delicious tortillas. I showed my mother the video and brought tears to her eyes. Many memories from my grampa (RIP) He used to go every Sunday morning to buy Barbacoa from Molinas on 23rd Street. I'm not sure if it's still in business. Then he would go grab fresh tortillas from El Pocito. I miss those days ,so much. We are planning to return back to live in the wonderful city of McAllen, hopefully very soon. Thank you again. I love your videos . ❤

Tejanos (Texas Mexicans with deeper roots in the state, most from before 1930 and some going back all the way to Spanish rule) from South and West Texas DO commonly natively speak English in a Southern dialect. Many Tejanos who speak Southern US English additionally speak with a mild spanish accent at the same time! They are Mexican Americans, Texans, Western, people of the borderlands but also they are Southerners! In the West Texas plains and panhandle many Tejanos speak with a much thicker Southern twang, many with no Spanish accent and sound just like someone from northern rural Alabama or Tennessee. While many have diet more Tex Mex or Mexican then Anglo Southern (which they still enjoy plenty of) they frequently have other Southern cultural traits including conservative protestantism and voting for conservative politicians!

Corn tortillas is my favorite and another things I just found out is, if you put pickled red onions on your tacos it will take you to another level.

I really really miss my Abuelita, and her hand made tortillas with butter, sometimes she would slice them into strips, sprinkle a little cinnamon and sugar on the strips and toast them.

My mother used to work at the "Terry Farris" in downtown McAllen. She introduced me to "El Pocito" when it really was a hole in the wall.

Excellent video! Love your authentic passion for the real deal food of my childhood. Only one thing I would need to bring for myself - butter! Country Crock isn't butter and should never be considered or confused as such
