Strangely enough, I went through a phase where I was really sad because I could never look like a kpop idol. I would read their weights online and feel soooo shitty about myself. Even my friends went through a similar phase, where we would compare our bodies to female idols and hate on ourselves. Of course, now I realize that some idols are not healthy and are eating waaay too little, and that some idols lost weight by going on extreme and unhealthy diets. However, I don't think people in the Korean music industry realize that some of their unrealistic beauty standards are starting to affect girls worldwide!

Khadijah M Also, their weights and heights that are listed online are faked, and it's a damn shame that they put up these fake numbers and give people unrealistic standards...

Khadijah M Actually some idols have eating disorders themselves so maybe kpop idols aren't best for people to look up to, depending on person though. People are so individual too, some can be skinny without dieting and some are bigger. Different body types should be celebrated.

"Theres a difference between being petite and having an eating disorder." THANK YOU. Oh my god. I've been petite my whole life and people are so rude. I've even had people in public that I didn't even know make comments to me about 'not eating enough'. In reality I eat all the time and love food.

Is the education system in korea as torturous as it is perceived to be? If so how do the teenage fangirls have time to queue overnight at music shows for their idols?
@BeatsByPento
@BeatsByPento 9 жыл бұрын
Shermaine Wong It can be. It depends on the student, parents and how much pressure the schools puts on them. My Korean friends will stay up till 2-3am studying but nobody is forcing them to do it, but the pressure to do really well go to the best uni and get the best job will force it upon themselves. Also I don't know, maybe blowoff school? Or no homeroom/self study time?
@eunchson221
@eunchson221 9 жыл бұрын
Shermaine Wong Honestly, it's not. It's way exaggerated. I'm Korean and I graduated Korean high school last year. It's pretty much the same as anywhere else. Sure, there are the students that work their asses off to get into top universities but that's only a small percentage. We are pressured more by our parents and teachers to study harder than students in other countries but that doesn't mean we always do lol. And not all fangirls "throw their grades to the wind", they can do both lol.
@BeatsByPento
@BeatsByPento 9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Baek This is very similar in the UK as well, we don't even have university(college) entrance exams at most universities, if they are it's mostly top tier. Also we don't have teenagers killing themselves because they can't cope with getting bad grades, it's a shame that it happens even if its not that often :(
@SweetLitzLM

Shermaine Wong I don't think fangirls queue overnight... I mean... I went to a few music shows and the girls usually made a list the day before the music show. So you could call the "fanclub staff" and put your name on the list and just come an hour before the show starts the next day and then form the queue in order.

Daniel Baek But the SATs and ACTs are kind of like our version of college entrance exams. Those test are what determine what college you go to, do well and you're set but do bad and...good luck getting accepted anywhere.

It has always irritated me to see K-Pop articles that say "Ailee talks about how she lost 10kg..." (She was perfectly fine before!) These articles are promoting starvation, as the idols explain they went a whole day on like 600 calories a day, on top of a busy rehearsal schedule that would make them burn more calories in that regard. It's really disappointing because now that K-Pop is more global, even international fans are going to be affected by these images and false perceptions they must live up to with themselves.

Eat Your Kimchi My psychology background makes me wonder about the effect of mukbangs on their audience, especially vis-a-vis Korean social pressure to get thin and stay thin. I also wonder how such social pressure could arise in a culture where the food greeting for hosts is literally "eat a lot." It's a very odd dynamic. On the lighter side, what do you guys think of the drama _Let's Eat 2_? I'm having some problems with it since it seems more like a mukbang with a little bit of story thrown in. What's more, by episode 5, they've all but eliminated Doonjoon's lines where he schools someone on the finer points of whatever they're eating. What are your thoughts on the show, if you've seen any of it?

Eat Your Kimchi I'd say it's getting better in Canada in reguards to people slowly becoming more accepting of mental health issues IF you live in an urban area, from my experience of growing up and talking to rural people mental health is still very stigmatized by the majority of the population. Help is offered in the cities through out-patient services, therapy and mental health institutions such as Homewood in Guelph, Ontario, but we have a ways to go.

Eat Your Kimchi I guess no one seems to care about eating disorders here in America, it seems like. I'm anorexic, but you can't tell by looking at me because my depression and anxiety pills make me gain a lot of weight. The most anyone's ever said to me is "are you gonna eat lunch?" and I just say no and they leave the topic alone.

In Ghana, West Africa it's kinda opposite with the "skinnier you are the wealthier you are". My mom said that when she was growing up there if you were over weight it was actually considered a good thing because it's showed that your family was rich and could afford to buy you food while the people who were skinny were thought of as abused or poor.

This is a really upseting topic. In México, at least where I live, there is no knowledge what so ever about eating disorder or mental health. I'm only 17 and I've had bulimia, anxiety and depression for over 5 years. I attempted suiciede twice and that almost made me fall in a psichiathric hospital because of ny parents. It's really hard to have mental or any kind of health issue without people knowing and making fun of you. My boyfriend is the only one that's helping me and I'm happy to say that after a lot of years of suffering I'm finaly going to see a psicologist. I really wish we could make a change in small towns like mine, everyone is so closed minded that anything different from what they know is wrong or stupid. Not everyone that maybe looks ok IS ACTUALLY OK. Maybe they look like they might have everything but the only thing thar matters is how they feel. Please, parents, family, friends, boyfriends and girlfriends, always talk to your love ones. They might want to kill themselves and you don't even know it. Talk before it's too late.

Franchesca A. Romero I'm going to call this bleeding syndrome. If they can't see a problem literally such as a cut or a broken limb with a cast, it doesn't exist to them and you're just whining. I'm afraid the older generations are this way. I know my grandfather was. It's well, dying out, thankfully. Many people are beginning to understand the science behind it all and how addictions and mental conditions can not be "willed" away or that someone who has them is somehow weak or worthless. People react negatively to what they don't understand though. I have OCD, depression, am overweight and have anxiety. Much of the world knows of those words and either makes fun of it or doesn't know what it means. I'm personally going to be studying neurology (the human brain and how it works) and see if I can either help others or encourage pushing this knowledge. And hopefully find some cures for it too. After all, most of the things wrong are chemical imbalances, negative learned habits and other things. If your psychologist knows anything about it, suggest something called CBT (Cognative Behavioral Therapy) it works for many things, including OCD, anxiety, depression etc. It's basically about retraining the brain new habits and exposing yourself to fears on purpose so that the mind has no choice but to face it. It's not fun and it's not easy, but it does help. Meditating also helps, but for some including myself it's very hard to do. I wish you the best of luck in your appointment and in life. Depression, anxiety all forms of mental issues and conditions that have negative impacts are awful things that the world needs to understand, because SOOO many people have it and often don't even realize.

I will just go ahead and generalize that most Asians are just obsessed with weight. Not saying that western countries aren't as well, but I feel that it isn't as intense as Asian countries. As an Asian born and raised in Canada, while my friends will say that I'm petite, my mom keeps on telling me to lose a little bit of weight. Well, I'd say, some of weight comes from my height since I'm unusually tall for an Asian girl. But my mom doesn't understand that. And then she'd say that because I can wear the same clothing size as her, I should be losing weight... Right, my mom has the best logic ever. (no offense mom, lol) Oh and when we have family friends over, or we're going to their house or an event, one of the first topic is about weight. Like "oh wow, you lost weight!" or straight up say "Oh my god, what happened?" Yeah, they can be that direct.

I'm exactly the same as Martina's sister. It is nearly impossible for me to gain weight and it bothers me when people talk to me about my weight. It makes me sad that idols' lyrics or outfits are censored, but they are allowed to discuss unhealthy dieting.
@randomchibij7627
@randomchibij7627 9 жыл бұрын
I'm the same. Most of my life I've been really small and people just can't seem to realize that just because I'm small for my age doesn't mean I don't eat. (If I didn't eat how would I still be alive) I actually eat quite a lot and I gain weight really slowly. But people just like to assume things and that can get really hurtful and quite annoying. I've come to love my size because I know I'm healthy and I know nothing is wrong with my size. Well it seems that in Korean society these "diets" are just considered normal. I know it's not healthy but unless someone in their society is willing to stand up to these unhealthy habits it's just going to continue.

bri gomez Exactly! The whole idol thing makes no sense at all. It sorta reminds me of how in America there is now a huge movement to accept curvy people and as a result skinny people are left behind. There are some clothing companies that won't even show skinny models wearing their clothes. I think its completely okay to not show unhealthy/deathly skinny models, but its telling skinnier women that its not okay for them to be as thin as they are. A lot of us can't help that we're the way we are. I wish America and the world was more towards accepting ALL body types instead of what the current ideal body is.

While growing up, eating disorders (and anorexia in particular) was always a sensitive and hot topic in my household. My sister developed the disorder very early in her childhood, and people often judged my parents (and our siblings/upbringing) as a result of the problem she faced. I became a strong advocate against people discussing their (or others) weight/diets in any capacity. It's insensitive, and you never know what the other person is going through. I'll never forget walking through my high school while people would make snorting noises as I walked by; nor will I forget the teenagers who called my sister fat AND skeletor when she would arrive back at school after being released from the hospital. People are cruel.

I am so sick of hearing about all these diets and stuff. Eat this, don't eat it, eat this but watch how much you consume, eat as much of this as you want, ect. It's driven me to tears more times than I'd like to admit. I've had pretty bad body image for a couple years and ended up losing 10 pounds in a month. I obsessed over every calorie, did cardio all the time, didn't give a crap about nutrition as long as I stayed under a certain amount of calories. As a result, I'm prone to dizzy spells whenever I stand up, no matter how slowly I stand. Thankfully, I've gotten on a better track recently. I'm no longer counting calories (I simply have a general idea of them), I still do cardio, but I also strength train, and I'm really starting to love myself again.

When I watched SNSD's new video for Catch Me If You Can, the first thing I immediately noticed was Yoona and Sooyoung's anorexic-like figures. At first I noticed how visibly defined Yoona's jawline is and how thin her face looked - like she had no underskin fat whatsoever. And then.. Sooyoung's legs... Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Girls' Generation and Yoona and Sooyoung are actually two of my favorite members, but this is just getting ridiculous. This is not even about being naturally skinny anymore - it's getting unhealthy and I hope fans raise some awareness and sm stops starving their idols. (although I don't think it will ever happen)

@TheAimireplica 9 жыл бұрын
***** You were making it sound like anorexics only starve, bulimics only purge, which isnt true. It might be easier to say, but it's not factually correct. Since there is so much misconceptions about EDs (like how anorexic dont eat- Yes they do. Not eating makes you die.) I'd rather clear it up during explainations to non-ED people.
@TheAimireplica
@TheAimireplica 9 жыл бұрын
***** 'Pure anorexia' also includes the binge purge subtype. I gather that you mean the other commenter was talking about the stereotypical anorexic, but once again, 'pure anorexia' makes it sound like the subtype is not a part of the 'pure' category, which it is. It is also fairly common. I dont mean to imply you were trying to ignore other disorders; my point was that you weren't explaining the full extent of the anorexia category, merely dumbing it down to the 'not eating' stereotype. My life revolves around EDs, I know the safe foods. But you can say the same for bulimics or EDNOS. Anorexics just tend to eat less in comparison to other EDs, which leads to their underweight diagnosis.
@TheAimireplica
@TheAimireplica 9 жыл бұрын
***** I find it unhelpful to add to the stereotype by simplifying it so much. It doesnt take much words to explain you dont mean all anorexics only 'starve' and all bulimics only purge. The misconceptions with anorexics is incredible, no need to add fuel to the fire. As I said already; I gather you were talking to someone who was talking about the stereotypical anorexic, but obviously, she has no personal experience of anorexia and doesnt know much about it. It doesnt help to fuel her obviously wrong preconceptions, because while YOU may know you're dumbing it down, she doesnt.

In Vietnam, I have never, nor has any of the people I know, heard of or experienced anorexia. Partly because the older generation aka our parents and grandparents, when they see us just a bit pale, they will be "Oh my dear you look so skinny, you should eat more", plus we love eating (or is it just me?). Our diet contains loads of green and rice, plus we have high mentabolism, so a lot of guys and girls you see on the streets have reasonable weights, maybe a bit flabby if they're not manual labours. But if you're seriously chubby, as in it shows, people will flat out tell you to lose weight, and you will be that kid who will forever be teased by both friends and enemies about your weight, whether it's in the past or the present. Nowadays with loads of fast food chains, and shifts in the way the newer generation of parents are feeding their children, quite a lot of kids are becoming overweight too (they have iPad and smartphones now, why do they have to go out and be active? *sacarstic question*)

hehetheeheehehe Yeah, those polar-opposite opinions just push people into either side, public's opinions are really scary. And the way the media portrays the "ideal" figures is to blamed too. I'm 1m66 and right now at 61kg, in Western's eyes I'm in good shape but I'm really flabby and feel very insecure among other girls who have petite frame or same height but visibly skinnier. I see those Victoria's Secret Angels and I think I'm falling victim to this toxic trend of not satisfied with my weight and desperately trying to lose some. But I love food too much so I settled on working out.

(At the beginning of the video) I've been petit my whole life as well, having to deal with the same comments as Martina's sister, I'd be so insecure about saying what my weight is because it was always below the average no matter how much I ate. So I'm so glad that they pointed something like this out because it's not just overweight people that feel insecure about their weight.

I have a very good friend of mine that is a form of anorexic that is not so much starving yourself but more of taking healthy to an extream. She works out an hour a day on an elipticle (sorry I cant spell) she has to have her own healthy food, she refuses to eat any other food and it really does not help that she has some sensory issues like I do which I think is the main cause for these eating happits. She has never been treated for this because she is at a very healthy weight but it still does concern me. I wish I could have her over and give her a nice dinner but when I have her over she won't even have my water. I live in a very small town and I have never seen any places that do anything to help people with eating disorders. There was once a girl in my school when I was in 5th grade who died because she was anorexic. She had a heart attack because she had little to no food in her body. I was never very close to her so when she died I did not freak out but after that my school did a whole thing about eating disorders. I remember once I saw her and she was wearing a tank top and she looked so bad, this was about a month before she died. I wish I could have gotten to know her better and gave her some support but it was too late by the time I started to notice what was wrong. If you are having thoughts like this or know someone with one of these disorders PLEASE get them help.

I've always wondered if the idol's weights that are made public are real. I asked my nutritionist if it was healthy for someone who's height is 160cm-ish to weight 45kg, they told me totally not healthy...
@eatyourkimchi

Camila Fernandez Well, those stats that you're reading on their weights are faked as well, along with their heights. A lot of idols are SIGNIFICANTLY shorter than what they say their heights are.

Camila Fernandez Long ago there was a picture of S&M on Star King or something and they took it with Super Junior. On their profile, they were all like "Eunhyuk: 1m74. Leeteuk: 1m75" and etc. I don't particularly remember, it's an awful long time and although I'm an ELF, I don't mind those kind of details. But overall, Super Junior's average height supposed to be about 1m7 and above. But in that pic, they look exceptionally small compared to S&M, not just in term of size but height as well. We all know Simon is a giant, but even with Martina minus her heels (I don't even know if she wore them then), SJ was visibly shorter. So there you go.

I wish weight wasn't such a taboo subject here in the US. About a year ago I was clinically obese, and a lot of it had to do with the fact that no one really wanted to bring up the fact that I had been steadily gaining weight over the last few years. If my husband didn't flat out tell me, "You need to lose weight," then I probably would have never had any motivation to change what I was doing. People act like they're in a mine field when the subject of weight is brought up, when in all actuality it shouldn't be any more different than saying, "Hey you should see a doctor about that ache in your arm." Weight is a matter of health and people should see it that way. On the flip side, though, people need to understand that E. Asians are more susceptible to various weight and diet related health risks at lower BMIs than the rest of the world. So while yes we see a lot of the Asian population being relatively thin (Before y'all get on my back, I'm not saying all Asians are skinny), we also have to remember that they have stricter "Guidelines," (I have a fever and can't remember the word I actually want) for their health. We don't have such present health risks and shouldn't be comparing ourselves to a race that does. Maybe I should stop talking and go sleep.

This is a topic that is very personal for me so thank you for talking about it :) You were very informative but also tactful enough that you avoided saying anything that might easily trigger someone recovering. I met Anna when I was 13 or 14, just finishing up 8th grade. I went from weighing around 150-something to, I think my lowest was 108, over the span of 3 months. Now, at age 19, I still run into Anna and she tries to destroy my life. I just recently almost relapsed into some of my bad habits, as I usually do whenever I decide I might want to loose weight. Weight is a hard topic for me to discuss, either with my friends or with my therapist or with my family, so it makes me very happy to see you discussing it in such an open-minded and open-hearted way. Thank you for being so amazing, Simon and Martina!!!

jrocknpoppingirl I also struggle from Anorexia Nervosa. However, I would just like to say that Anorexia Nervosa is a disorder, a mental illness. It is not a person, and it a very hurtful and triggering for a lot of people when people call mental illnesses by some pet name like Ana, Mia, Rex... etc. I know I'm overreacting a little bit... But I've dealt with people that glorified mental health such as Pro-ED people that like to "Thank Ana for making me skinny."

I'm actually studying to be a youth worker in Ottawa, ON and this year at my co op placement (at an elementary school) I had the opportunity to make programs for students suffering from eating disorders. The program educated the children about what an eating disorder is and how to properly diet and excersise and to stay healthy. It also gabe them places where they can go to help after the program was done.There are tons of little children from grades 4-8 who come up to me telling me that they think their overweight or if they're suffering from an eating disorder and want help. Over here, it's easy to get help for these disorders at almost every school and medical facility such as cheo (children's hospital of eastern Ontario).

Im really glad Martina spoke up for smaller size women. I get so frustrated when people say "0 is not a size", because it is for me. It has become know in society not to call a larger women degrading things like "fat", but apparently its still okay to shame skinnier women and call them anorexic? If society wants to promote appreciation of different body types they should do so for ALL body types, not just larger sizes. Just because I'm skinny does not mean i am not healthy or that i starve myself to death, it is just how i was genetically built.

i live in taiwan, and whilst i believe that the amount of dieting is probably a little less than in south korea, it's definitely a lot more prevalent than in western countries. for instance, when i lived in a western country, saying you were on a diet was immediately met with responses like, "what? why? you look great already!" or "are you becoming anorexic now?", etc etc whereas now that i live in taiwan i regularly hear (especially with young women) "oh, you're on a diet? me too!" or "yeah i can't eat that because i'm trying to lose weight" and nobody will judge you for saying that. Also, people are a lot more weight conscious and more likely to point out each other's weights or just to talk about body weight in general. i think it can be both a good thing and a bad thing though.

I'm from Poland and people here still confuse anorexia with a body type. Whenever there's a picture of a skinny girl online, people would leave comments like 'Oh God, give her a hamburger!' 'Real men like curves!!' etc. It's awful. People also tend to forget that not everyone with an eating disorder is skinny, so it's harmful for sick people who then think 'I have an eating disorder but I dont look sick! What's wrong with me?!'. It happened to me actually and I'm still trying hard to think more nicely about myself.

Martina, I'm so happy you pointed out that there are people who are just naturally petite and are not anorexic. For such a big part of my life, people would call me anorexic or "not eating enough" when there was nothing wrong with me and it made me think something was wrong. Now I'm more confident and comfortable with my own body and I don't care what other people have to say to me about my weight/body. However, what really annoys me is that there are people out there who are now "thin-shaming". I think that's just as bad as those who are "fat-shaming" and both need to stop and understand that they both hurt people just as much.

Hey there Simon and Martina, you raised an interesting thought when you mentioned stigma towards mental health/disorders. What kind of image do Korean people have when mental health is mentioned? What kind of treatment is most looked down upon, and what kind of treatment is most used? Also, if a person spoke out (accidental or purposefully) about their own mental health and disorders that they have been diagnosed with, would they then get ostracized and distanced from, maybe even bullied? Thank you for the thought-provoking and entertaining videos ~^^~

For health reasons I've had to do a big diet change recently and one of the things I had to cut out was rice. I miss rice so much and my meals seem sadder without it. I only really dieted once and it wasn't healthy (I was under eating and working out excessively) but, because of my body type, I was not thin looking so no one would ever really know. It was only my older brother who read my written plan and wrote a note on it saying "Isn't this too little??!!" In the end, I gained double the weight back the second I ate a regular meal- it's much better to just be healthy, be active and in the rare occasion, treat yourself!

There was a Korean movie from the 90's(I think?) that was about eating disorder called '301, 302'. Two women living next door, one struggling with bulimia, the other with anorexia. I was a kid so I never saw the movie, but it's interesting that someone (in Korea!) made a movie about it so long ago. The majority of the older generation still has no idea; I've heard from my sister about a granddad who would not let his granddaughters eat a lot, and they're only 7 and 5! The Mom makes sure her kids eat whenever he's not around, of course.

This is a really interesting topic for me. I grew up in Canada and have spent 10 years in and out of mental health clinic, recovery centers and hospitals because of an eating disorder I developed at 11. We have great treatment programs and the facilities are amazing but I'm still shocked how so many doctors, councilors and schools treat this as a fad rather than an actual mental problem. I've heard so much negative feedback from the school system and many times people are extremely under informed when it comes to EDs, I really hope this changes in the future but at this point I don't see it happening

People don't really view it that way anymore though, to be honest. From what I observed it seemed like the Filipino slender body type seemed to be the most attractive to the locals (Not saying all Filipinos are slender, just from what I saw in my school, the majority of them there were) Also I moved like a little over a year ago to Florida, and I lost some weight since tbh the food here ain't got nothing on Hawaii so I'm eating a lot less, and now everyone in my family calls me skinny (even though I'm just barely a normal BMI)

i understand your feelings Martina, around people making skinny comments. One of my best friends is naturally very slim, while i'm "plus sized", she can eat way more than me and has to because her body metabolizes food so fast. She always hated being called things like "string bean" or "skinny". I don't blame her, no one would tell me to put that candy bar down, while they don't hesitate to say to her "eat a sandwich".

I feel the same as your sister. I'm naturally small and I also love to do sports so I had a lot of people throughout my life saying that I needed to "eat a burguer" and that I didn't need to lose weight, assuming that I wanted to and even making jokes about me being anorexic. I actually live a pretty healthy lifestyle and workout to gain some weight and feel more energised. Although I am confident now, I struggled with those comments when I was younger. I wish everyone was a little more body positive! Really loved the video :) you guys always have great topics ^^
