Decided to make a change to my diet and started eating meat... but probably not why you think.

FULL GYM PROGRAM: bit.ly/fullgymprogram
30 DAY GARAGE PROGRAM: bit.ly/3igtiIF
After being vegan for four years I decided my body was ready for a change. Several things pushed me in this direction, one of the biggest that I didn't mention in the video itself was how often I was getting sick. It seemed like once a month I would come down with the flu and my immune system was garbage.
I'm not going to lie it's a little weird but I feel physically better so I can't argue with that.

I REALLY appreciate all you do. Especially your humorous approach to this topic. Was excited when you got the machine that measures activation. Can't wait to see what all you publish in that regard. Okay, enough ass-kissing. ;-) I'll be 56 in a few days. I was super fit in the younger years (soldier and all that) then just let myself go until I hit 275 lbs. Lost 25 lbs and started olympic weight lifting (functional fitness/crossfit) two years ago. Was slamming the protein shakes until I found your protein videos. Took a break from the shakes and, it would seem, recovery is the only place I even noticed a difference. I eat at least 2-4 eggs/day to supplement. I haven't lost a single pound (still 250) but everyone who hasn't seen me in a while thinks I've lost a ton of weight. I'm still making new PR's and continuously revising my goals in the gym. Thank you for the inspiration and kicks in the ass.

I have a question Ryan.. no matter what exercise I do, from bench press to pushups, my rotator cup would give me issues. Dont have or never have had any shoulder or arm injuries prior to me wanting to start building muscle. As simple as doing pushups, eventually I feel pain. How do I fix this? I'm 5'11, 140-150lbs, also I dont have the best diet for exercise. Is it a diet issue or do you think its a posture issue?

On the topic of digestibility scores, I don't know why you would make decisions on it after recognizing it as 'flawed to the ninth degree.' It's applicability to human nutrition is quite removed-we are obviously not pigs being fed dry and uncooked foods in isolation as these studies test on, we (fortunately) cook our food and have variety in our diets, which allows for a more than sufficient amino acid profile in vegan diets even for those wanting to put on a lot of muscle mass. Regarding the study you bring up, you leave out a lot of very important context. The study is indeed looking at blocked lysine percentages across 52 protein supplement sources, which happens due to this molecule called furosine (which primarily comes from animal products) blocking lysine absorption. It's ironic that you bring up this study, because it literally supports plant-based protein supplementation. Read this excerpt (I included both the spanish original and english translation): Spanish) Los valores de lisina bloqueada oscilaron entre no detectado para la muestra PPS 23, que como ya hemos comentado no contenía furosina y se trataba de una mezcla de proteínas no lácteas (soja, guisante, arroz y trigo), seguida por las muestras PPS 37 con un valor de 0,76 % (muestra de aislado del lactosuero) y 58,6% para la muestra PPS 39, muestra que además de mezcla de proteínas del lactosuero contenía péptidos del mismo.
 English Translation) The blocked lysine values ranged from not detected for the PPS 23 sample, which, as we have already commented, did not contain furosine and was a mixture of non-dairy proteins (soybean, pea, rice and wheat), followed by the PPS 37 samples with a value of 0.76% (sample of whey isolate) and 58.6% for the PPS 39 sample, shows that in addition to the mixture of whey proteins it also contained peptides. Interpretation-the one plant-based protein supplement looked at in this study was the only one that showed ZERO blocked lysine, while all of the whey protein supplements had some amount of furosine and thus some amount of lysine blocked. So the study you cited doesn't cast doubt on protein manufacturers, it specifically casts doubt on whey protein manufacturers while demonstrating that plant-based protein supplement sources don't have this anti-nutrient furosine. This comment is long as hell at this point, so I'll wrap it up by saying that 1. you should really base stuff in science, e.g. don't arbitrarily claim that vegan diets eventually run into nutrient deficiencies or claim that it's responsible for hair loss??? 2. when interpreting science, make sure you're taking all the context into consideration and then (and only then) make decisions based on it. 3. look into the animal agriculture industry and recognize how unnecessarily cruel it is to provide us with products we don't even need. it's not even about being an animal lover-it's just recognizing that mass breeding them into a life of abuse then murdering them for unnecessary products is just kinda fucked. Here's a link to the study if anyone is interested in interpreting it themself: digibug.ugr.es/handle/10481/26382 oh yeah and please keep up the EMG videos 🙏

In 3 weeks I went from severe heart attack and coronary artery syndrome risks to the bottom of of the scale for triglyceride to HDL ratio. Yes, I had diarrhea for a week solid but in 3 weeks I've lost 9 lb, I don't have gas anymore, and I've gone from pooping twice a day to pooping once every 3 days. Same here (15 years). Ryan is mistaken on this one, protein and "nutrients" are never a problem on vegan diet. In the early days of WFPB I was getting a little tired and realized I was eating so clean I was getting almost no sodium. Added seaweed and/or sea salt to some meals and felt great ever after.
@C.ODubhlaoich
@C.ODubhlaoich Жыл бұрын
Maybe. I'm O- and I have been vegan, vegetarian, and carnivorous. I easily felt best on carnivore. I also wasn't one of those people who eat a bunch of Oreos and veggie sandwiches, I actually ate really well as a vegan. Felt bogged down mentally and physically, really really gassy etc. Carnivore I feel light, stronger, generally healthier. Hair and skin is better too. If a time ever comes when it's proven that certain blood types are healthier on one diet over another, there will still be certain vegans telling us to ruin our health though.
@C.ODubhlaoich
@C.ODubhlaoich Жыл бұрын
Oh and I also tried that one where you eat only fish as meat and I felt second best on that.
@terryjackson9395
@terryjackson9395 Жыл бұрын
@@C.ODubhlaoich I believe you. And I do hear that, but only on the internet really. Those that I know personally that stay vegan (getting enough b12, vit D, etc) do great and never go back. The interesting thing, if you think about it, there is absolutely no nutrient that's in meat that's not in a plant based diet. And in fact, the plant based diet has hundreds (maybe 1000s) of things meat doesn't have (Boron, P38 inhibitors, NAD precursors, polyphenols, fiber, folate, potassium, carotenoids, DMT etc). So most likely what bogs some people down on a vegan diet isn't "lack of" nutrients, but probably TOO MANY nutrients. Things that some people may be sensitive to, at least at first. Thus the entire, "nutrient deficiency" meme is incorrect. Those that do better on meat-only, probably can only handle macros but not a lot of micros. And thus you'd probably do just as well eating mostly Impossible Burgers, which are really just protein and fat. And lab meat would also work. Once I hear someone complain-in-advance about lab meat, then I know that harming animals is simply a religion to them (or perhaps how they earn a living directly or indirectly).
@C.ODubhlaoich
@C.ODubhlaoich Жыл бұрын
@@terryjackson9395 The sound of lab grown meat really weirds me out. I am just not the type of person to just flippantly trust stuff like that won't have any strange side effects somewhere down the line. There are definitely some things you can't get in a plant based diet without supplementing, some things are merely just different forms of the same minerals or vitamins, like how you can get iron in plant foods, but not heme iron, or certain fatty acids. Plus the majority of the meat I even eat is hunted, no more than two a year, and I make goat cheese and eat a lot of eggs from the goats and chickens that love it here. Feels pretty right to me 🤷‍♂️.

So... Am i getting this right? You stopped being vegan because you need to supplement with protein shakes but can't drink them because one case study from spain said 10-30 % of the leucine content isn't bioavailable? Why don't you just take one scoop more to get enough protein if you "had" to take protein shakes? This doesn't really make sense to me since you've apparently gone vegan for ethical reasons.

This is freaking AWESOME, and demonstrates why Ryan is so amazing. IMHO, the biggest reason people don’t make progress is so many people are obsessed with being RIGHT. They pick up some advice or learn a technique, it works for a while, then they resist changing anything they’re doing, slowly plateau, then give up. The “uncle Ricos” of the gym. If you’re not questioning everything you’re doing all the time and staying humble you’re limiting your potential. Don’t mistake movement for progress.

@@mateuszskodowski2007 100% driven by ego. The problem with a lot of people is, like the other person pointed out, they start off every thought with the assumption that they are correct. "Should I drink this shake? I correctly built my diet around this, so yes I should." "Why would she talk to me like that? I know that what I said wasn't offensive, so she must be overreacting." You should always begin any thought process with the understanding that you are a dumb human that has brain farts, and can be lied to, and be susceptible to misinformation and persuasion, so whatever your base level knowledge is could be wrong.

Have you lads tested your cholesterol and blood pressure after being on the carnivore diet? I'm 53 and feel like I am falling a part here. I droppped alcohol, gluten and dairy, along with 16 hour fasting each day. I have seen some positive results as a result. I would say my current diet is closer to paleo, but am interested to learn more of your results after switching to carnivore.

You dont have to take in all essential aminoacids in one meal. It works perfectly fine to just combine sources of Protein with different Amino-Acid Profiles. You could keep taking that protein low on lysin if you have another lysin source. You can look up which vegan options serve best for you. Also: Eggs do have a perfectly balanced profile of aminoacids. Maybe try those before switching to eating meat. Hope this helps

I've been a vegan for over 20 years now. I'm 6' and 205lbs. Not at Ryan's level of mass but I'm very happy with my strength and musculature (and definitely not chubby 😅). When I took on bodybuilding 7 years ago I was 175lbs and added about 10lbs of lean mass per year over the course of 3 years following the kinesiology science of 0.5 x pound bodyweight protein grams per day, which amounts to about 100-120 grams of protein per day in a slight calorie surplus. The grams add up quickly (1 cup cooked lentils is 18 grams. Peanut butter on sprouted bread comes to 20g). Pea protein isolate and tempeh are excellent bioavailable sources per the literature and not far off from whey. I can assure those who are skeptical that it's not an issue. The documentary gamechangers shows a number of elite and massive vegan athletes (like Tony Gonzalez and the Titans offensive lineman). Sure I could meat pack and probably more easily add to my gains but at a consequence to my cardiovascular and cancer risk health (average bodybuilder life expectancy is 55 years). Pre vegan at age 22 my blood pressure was 130/88 and total cholesterol 225. Since going vegan my total cholesterol hovers around 125 and blood pressure numbers average around 105/68. Vegetables, fruit, and whole grains have high nutrient density and if one observes a list of nutrient density per calorie animal products tend to reside at the lower end of the spectrum. If one is striving for nutrient dense, whole, high fiber foods the experience should be the opposite of the fable: the vegan diet provides better nourishment. There should also be ethical consideration of the environmental destructiveness and unnecessary violence towards animals components. Is an extra inch of bicep muscle worth the taking of an animal's life against his/her interest? Consciousness matters. The environment and biodiversity matters. The slaughterhouse workers who remedy with drugs, alcohol, and wife beating matter. The question we all need to ask ourselves is does the means justify the ends? And what is the purpose of such ends?
@jakemasters4361
@jakemasters4361 Жыл бұрын
Well said. I had sort of a crisis of conscience in my late 20s, after being a chicken and burger guy my whole life. I jumped through a dozen different hoops to continue justifying my bad habits, but it got to the point my meals were literally causing me anxiety because there was always that voice in my head reminding me of all the things I'd seen and heard from plant-based advocates regarding health and animal welfare. Two years in now to whole food plant based, I've never felt or looked better. I agree that if your sole goal in life, even if it means mortgaging your long-term health, is maximal strength and/or hypertrophy, will you have an easier time achieving that with animal products? Probably, but the "is it worth it" question was something that eventually swayed me, though to be fair it didn't happen overnight. For me it was finally realizing what the things I ate really were. For so long, meat was just another product I had never really considered the origins or impact of.

Thank you for your thoughtful statement, and congratulations on your progress. I am not a doctor, but I have a family history of cardiovascular disease and have spent many years looking and listening to research findings regarding that topic. By no means am I an expert, and I enjoy having conversations on the topic. Besides being a snapshot, reporting a total cholesterol of 225 and a BP of 130/88 shouldn't concern most people. The body needs cholesterol as a vehicle in the blood system. With your total cholesterol now around 125, be careful that other issues aren't to follow. You might find it interesting that people dying from heart attacks are fairly close to those with total cholesterol over 200 as it is under 200. Some experts will look at the ratio between HDL and triglycerides as a better marker to look at for health. I will not disagree that correlation studies have shown that consuming meat increases cancer risk. I suggest looking at what is included as meat in some of these studies. I have found one study that included pizza as a meat product due to the fact that some people will put meat on pizza. I will add that these are correlation studies and not causation studies. The results being given are as a relative percentage increase and not an actual percentage increase. I mean that a study could report a 20+ percent increase in cancer risk for a person who consumes meat products. If you read the study, they might show the risks for an average person who eats a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle has a cancer risk of 1.2%, whereas an average person who consumes meat (all types of meat. Processed, straight from the ranch grass-finished, or store-bought industrial meats) has a cancer risk of 1.5%. The relative risk of a meat consumer to a vegan/vegetarian is over 20%, but the actual risk is only 0.3%. When you said the average life expectancy for bodybuilders is 55 years, is that all bodybuilders, natural bodybuilders, or steroid-using bodybuilders (Good thing Arnold, Lou, and Frank Zane have passed that age)? Just as people say, the average life expectancy 100 years ago was in the 40s, but included all of the infant deaths that medical science has been able to help with. If you take infant deaths out of the equation, the average life expectancy was closer to the mid-60s. The consideration of environmental destructiveness is very important and the reason to encourage local sourcing of the foods you consume. People today like to eat whatever foods they want during any part of the year they want when many of these foods naturally aren't available in their local region. To be able to get these foods delivered requires massive transportation systems. This is for both animal and plant-based eaters. If you are concerned with violence towards animal components, I hope you aren't getting your veggies from industrial farming. Farmers don't go out to kill rodents, rabbits, or other animals that live in their fields at harvest but do with their machinery, and these animal parts need to be removed from the crop prior to reaching stores. Don't let any carnivore or meat-based eater give you the stat that there are only 60 cycles left of crops. That statement was made by some woman at a WHO conference and has no data to back it up. Here is to you and your continued physical and personal gains in the years to come.

Then tried to do the Carnivore diet, based on research. That didn't work for my body at all. I've found that a balanced diet works the best. Everything (natural & whole) in moderation.
