INGREDIENTS LISTED BELOW ⬇⬇⬇ Here's another one of my favourite summer drinks - this time it's karkade, which is Egyptian hibiscus iced tea. It has a tangy flavour much like cranberry, but it's made from the sepals of the hibiscus flower. I drank this a lot in both Alexandria and Cairo, and now that the days have heated up in Toronto, I've been enjoying here. You can get two delicious steeps out of the flowers, and this video will show you how. Hope you do too!
INGREDIENTS
First Steep
1 cup of karkade (hibiscus flowers, sorelle)
1/2 cup of sugar
1.5 L of water
Mint (Optional)
Second Steep
1 cup of karkade (hibiscus flowers, sorelle)
1/2 cup of sugar
1.5 L of water
1 cinnamon stick
5-6 cloves
1 star anise
Juice of half a lemon

I've made this a million times and everyone absolutely loves it! It is great with agave as well (if you're trying to stay off the sugar) but needs a quarter of a cup instead of half so it doesn't become too sweet. Thank you for this wonderful recipe 😊

Thanks for making this video I LOVE Karkadi and had it in Egypt. Both from Hibiscus flower however it is NOT the same as Sorrel. The second version you made was cloers to Sorrel ingredients. I have been looking for the recipe of Karkadi and unable to find. I do know just visually it is much lighter red than sorrel so perhaps it is just more water. Again thanks for posting as this was the closest i have come to finding this egyptian drink

Hello! Sorry, I only saw this comment now! I agree that this is not exactly like Sorrel. I do love BOTH. There is just something so special about this flavour of this drink, and I can never get enough of it! I'm glad you were able to find a recipes similar to the drink you love!

Can I add apple juice or mix other fruits to drink it cold. I always drank hibiscus as a child.

What part of the hibiscus flower, as the karkadee plant I saw in Egypt wasn’t hibiscus 🌺

Hi Tania! It is the Roselle plant, which is actually a species of hibiscus. It's certainly not the one we all imagine or associate with the name "hibiscus" but they are in fact of the same species. Different genus I suppose... If you Google the Roselle plant you will see something that is in fact the karkade you may be familiar with. I hope that helps!

Every time I come India I bring 1 kilo of this dry hibiscus with me 🤭😹 my husband loves it and he also like lemon and mint which we don’t do ... we just soak it or boil it and let it set then we add sugar and ice and water

That's great! I also enjoy the infusion of mint, though I understand that this is not typical. What can I say about this drink..? I love it so much! It's so refreshing and such a beautiful colour!
