Nature's Cool-Aid: Vitamin C Roselle / Hibiscus Tea

I just came accross your video. I was very astonished to see the fruit which groes wildly in Bangladesh and is a bit invasive. I am also astonished to know it falls in the hibiscus family! It grows in summer in our country. We use it in many ways, each item is very delicious and tangy. Comfort food for our scorching summer. We cook tangy curry along with fish, tangy soup to be eaten with rice, jam, pickles, and also eat it as such just picking from the plant. We just tear away the petals of the fruit. The leaves also make delicious tangy souo, chutney and bharta(steamed,blended and seasoned with roasted garlic and salt,sugar, mustard oil). All items are very mouth watering. Never had it as tea.

My Roselle is the most giving plant I've ever had. It grew 9' tall and 5' wide. There were numerous branches loaded with the blossoms. The butterflies were dancing around it every morning. I picked calyxes every week from end of Sept through November - in Florida. It still has hundreds of blossoms and hundreds of fruit since I don't pick the whole stem. I have 9 plants and it has given me enough to make almost 50 pints of jam which I use in yogurt every morning, at least a years supply of dried fruit for tea, both hot and iced, and I love the fact that the Vitamin C stays since I dehydrate and never boil the tea - so healthful. I need to plant my winter garden but the Roselle is still growing crazy and I hate to cut it down when it is still producing and making the insects happy, too. Next year, 5 plants will be fine - LOL. I heard that the stems are used to make strong string or even rope. I do believe it is possible since they are so very tough. What an amazing plant.

@@nunyabiznes33 I steep it in cold water for cold tea. We keep in in fridge so kids have plenty of Vit C each day when they get a drink, anytime.they want from fridge.

Your can also eat the leaves. One of my plants fell down and one of mom's relative asked for it, saying in their province they cook it with fish. Basically it sour soup but the roselle leaves provide both the souring agent and leafy greens.

Sorrel is really popular throughout the Caribbean, especially at Christmas time. I am in Tobago, we just picked a few of the trees we planted. I haven’t really used dried sorrel because it keeps very well when frozen. Makes the sorrel juice the same even when frozen for up to three years. It also makes great jam.

In the Caribbean we cut around the calyx in a circle at the base of the stem to release it from the seed . Then we boil the calyx in a pot with cinnamon , clove and sometimes ginger. The longer you boil it the stronger the flavour . Then we sweeten it when it is cool and add some Angostura bitters and ice and then drink it. Remove the seeds if you want to freeze it so you can enjoy this drink all year round.

Great video! There is a strawberry huller device that works great. I use it for my processing. The cool thing with the strawberry huller is that it leaves the calyx intact. So that after then washing and dehydrating the calyces, they look complete and are a better market saleable item. People like to see the whole dried calyx. That way when they make their tea it's easier to measure the amount they're infusing - the calyxes being whole as opposed to a bunch of small pieces. I bought my strawberry huller at BB&B. - Pushing the button on the back of the huller pushes the pod through the petal opening of the calyx. Have never used an apple core to remove center. Great tip. Last year I ran out of time for drying or making a condensed syrup so I just put the petals in the freezer. Through the year I have been taking a half a cup at a time and putting it with a gallon of pre made green tea. It's very good!

The leaves are cooked with meat and they give sour flavour to the meat . Its pickled as well .My mum used to make compote with it .The colour is simply stunning .❤❤❤🌱🌺

I am from Mexico and always drank agua de jamiaca, my girls love it too. It is great for stomach aches too I always buy big bags at the store, but know I am going to look for the seeds to grow them in the summer. Thank you so much.

That’s a really popular drink in Mexico, we call it “Agua de Jamaica” which translates to water from Jamaica although the translation is off a bit, but it would be more like a tea or infusion, but as I was saying it is very popular in Mexico along with “Horchata” which is a drink which main ingredient is Rice!.

You can also ferment it slightly. Sorrel is the yummiest drink. Add a few cloves and a stick of cinnamon. Place in a stone jar for 48 hours. Sweeten and enjoy ! i drink it daily in season.

Thanks Melissa for the tip on stevia. I've been using it for many years when I could only get it in a dropper bottle in the health good store. I always wondered the difference in the thin liquid and the thick and have always used the thin. From what you said the thick glycerin is better. You two are such an awesome team

I have picked the calyxes way too soon - made jelly and it wasn't tasty. Then I waited and picked only the ones that had flowered and again I think too soon. I cooked it until it was candy and couldn't get it out of my jars. Finally, I'm getting ready to pick the 1 1/2" ones - I grew way too many plants. But I didn't realized how to do the tea and magically, I didn't grow too many - LOL. Thanks. Can't wait for more vids like this.

Great video of a very delicious and healthy tea!!! Yet, i'd like to say something very important,VIRAMIN C is very sensitive to heat,if you boil the hibiscus,for sure,100% of vitamina C is completely destroyed. You have to make a cold brew over night,un the fridge,for it to have all those benefits ✨✨✨

In Trinidad and Tobago the sorrel is used to make a drink which is more popular around Christmas time. This, together with a drink made from the ginger root, called ginger beer are two Christmas staples.

I have a cranberry hibiscus, which I thought was really cool. The flower is kind of the color of a cranberry. I need to find this particular hibiscus. Thank you for your excellent demonstration. This was delightful. Hey, I am supposing that once the parts are dry, it can be "cooked" out in the sun.

Nice to meet you. The hibiscus rosell plant has grown well and harvested large fruits. I've grown it before. The temperature dropped in the fall, so many fruits They couldn't harvest it. I eat it with jam or juice using a calyx, and I used stems and leaves to make it with enzymes and drink it instead of drinks. I enjoyed the video, and thank you for the good information. Yes, I boil it with ginger, clove, strain and sweeten it then serve it cold, from the Island of St.Vincent and the Grenadines...

I'm in SE NC and growing my first Roselle plant, thanks to a friend who gave me a 5" tall plant the last week in May. It's now over 5' tall and 6' wide, and I just noticed this week that it's covered in calyces! I haven't seen a flower yet and am hoping it's not too late in the season for them. But the plant itself has grown faster than my weeds in 5 months, and I'm hoping... I've been searching for recipes and uses for this plant, and your video is my favorite so far. Do you have a place with additional recipes listed?I"m thinking of putting some of the green leaves into a smoothie. Is it safe to consume a handful of them? Thank you for this video and your suggestions for tea. I can't wait until mine are ready to harvest. Hope it doesn't freeze before they're ready!

Do you know what variety of Roselle you grew for use in your video? Those were much larger calyces than the variety we grow here in Oklahoma. Your leaves looked a little different than ours do also. Thank you, much, for the how-to-video.
