Well I can't tell you how glad I am to find you working on an XI instead of just a rear wheel drive!! That what my car is and there's almost nothing on the net on the X drive N54's! As well you obviously have a lot more experience with up graded turbos than I so I hope to learn a few things from your well done videos. I have only had my 17T's (Ebay) installed for about 9 months on my 2008 335XI Sedan. Right out the gate I have had troubles with boost leaks and squealing or whining or "Turkey and Duck" sounds from air leaking out of unknown places. I haven't even been able to move beyond a "Safe tune" to a full proper tune because I haven't been able to figure out what the heck is happening. I replaced almost everything on the car as soon as I bought it because I didn't want to go through what I'm going through with chasing ghosts. LOL. This is my second 335i and I got it for dirt cheap ($1500 USD) due to high mileage (180,00miles) a history of two accidents but it was professionally repaired and a blown wheel bearing, bad HPFP and then all the maintenance these babies require. Anyway I won't continue to bore you with my troubles but I must admit I am a bit happy to find you and your channel. I'm just about to install the ARM upgraded silicone hoses for the charge pipe to the intercooler and the outlet. Hopefully this may help my troubles but if not I'll move on to the next possibility. "Swap Depot" YT channel told me his "Duck sounds" on one of his new n54 cars were caused by a leaking outlet so I guess I'll look into that after installing the ARM hoses. Subbed, Bell rung!

Hey! I feel your struggle with the lack of xi information on KZfaq and the internet. Everyone makes it seem like turbo installs are so easy, but most of them work on rwd cars! Even my buddies with N54 brag about how easy it all is and I'm over here struggling over a whole weekend hahaha But yeah I would definitely recommend doing a boost leak test, there's plenty of diy options out there to plug your air intake and the. Add some compressed air into it. The words you use squealing and whining really make me hope it's nothing internal (rod bearings) or anything. I also replaced my belt and pulleys, helped quiet things down. Best of luck! Thanks for the sub!

@@jku392adventure I didn't expect you to actually see my post AND answer! THANK YOU! The date (Or now just time since commented boo) shows it was two months ago that I commented so where I'm at now is that the leaks have been hunted down and destroyed and I'm finally actually installing the set of "ARM MOTOR SPORTS" Upgraded silicone intercooler to charge pipe tubing. (That's a mouthful lol). I wrote about in the previous comment. They are a massive upgrade and I'm planning to get another custom tune on the car with the 17T turbkis and the 3.5 pressure sensor installed this time and the upgraded piping from ARM should be an insane boost blast! I'm looking to safely (Hopefully lol) run 600hp or so with all the mods I have now and the engine is running strong. I have a new to me used set of Injectors now too which have made a big improvement in the running and power. I just took a break as I do my work on the XI one step at a time. I'll go out spend an hour doing the work or even less then take a break and have a drink or watch a video etc. Then when i feel I'm all good I go back to the garage and do another round.

Careful with these big twins - if you max them out properly they have a tendency to pop engines (bent rods, cracked ring lands, lifted heads)

@BMW1M
@BMW1M Жыл бұрын
@@jku392adventure That is something you need to discuss with your tuner, because it's not just a single, magic number. An experienced tuner will know how to control and ramp in boost to mitigate the most common failure modes. Cracked ringlands and bents rods usually happen due to too much torque low down in the rev range. Even 17T's can pop a stock motor from too much torque if not tuned correctly. Lifted heads usually comes from just pushing boost too far. 17T's won't worry your head bolts, but bigger twins like the 19T's and flowmax's certainly can make enough jam for it to be an issue.
@jku392adventure

@@BMW1M thanks for the info! I'm my own tuner, so I'm definitely careful when it comes to pushing the motor. I do make sure not to target too high of boost in lower rpms. And as the driver I make sure not to floor it in lower rpms. So far these 19ts have made me quite happy!

Hey man I got a serious question, I have oem turbos and im FBO stage 2+ mhd, what else do I need aftermarket to run these, different return lines or different inlets? I need a very descriptive answer to everything else I'd need that won't work with what's on the car already
@jku392adventure
@jku392adventure Жыл бұрын
@@wegofast740 I believe you'll need aftermarket outlets (they will be the same for most aftermarket turbos), and also 2" inlets. You can use relocated inlets or stock location, they just need to be 2". Also it's recommend to have upgraded fuel pump. I have the bucketless. And the upgraded maf sensor if your going to want more boost. If under 20 psi your stock mad sensor will work. So in reality to make them work and bolt up, you really only need inlets and outlets. All oil lines and everything bolt right up

@@jku392adventure no the old ones the 17t cause it didn't look like the seal between the exhaust or compressor side was leaking oil so. could of checked a log and watched waste gate values etc to see, also were they leaking oil from the lines or was that from valve cover. how are the 19ts holding up tho im sure at even 24psi they should be more reliable and faster than 17ts

@jku392adventure Жыл бұрын
Ahhhhh gotchaaa, yeah it's possible they weren't closing all the way, although they both had upgraded wastegates. And they were definitely leaking oil from somewhere, I was getting puffs of smoke every time I came to a red light, and when making boost. The new ones are holding up nicely, they definitely feel better at 24 psi, and the boost curve is much more even, the 17ts seemed harder to have a clean boost line. @chris88331
@chris88331 Жыл бұрын
@@jku392adventure oh yeah just realized you dont have a lowside catch can id consider investing in one, the valve cover system doesn't last long and there is a theory on vacuum assisting the oil come through your return lines on turbos they say when you dont have it these turbos blow out easy if oil accumulates in the turbo and isn't drained fast enough it can damage the seals. which makes sense considering when people dont run the flapper valve to control vacuum on valve cover it looses all vacuum resulting in smoking exhaust experienced it first hand and fixed it if it goes like that long enough it can damage turbos etc. are you running flapper valve on your current high side catch can? ooh and by the way it will keep your valves so much cleaner because the lowside catch can eliminates the passage through the valve cover to intakes so lowside goes right to can instead.
