Garage Built Hondas

Күн бұрын

The 90 Si needed new shocks. I have been planning on selling it lately and wanted to replace the shocks before I sold it. I recorded some video of the driver rear tire on the same stretch of road before and after the shock replacement and you can see the difference in how the new shocks perform compared to the old Tokico Blue shocks not working at all. The car would bounce up and down on the old shocks before and after the car now feels normal again.
The shocks are by a company called "DNA MOTORING" and were $92 shipped for the complete set. These set was for any 88-91 Civic or CRX. They do not fit the Wagon models. Compared to buying a set at Autozone for about $240 this was quite a deal. I was hesitant at first about quality but they are built very well and after driving on them, they feel great. I compressed the shocks to see how quickly the piston rebounds and it seems to work at the speed that most shocks rebound. No complaints here at all.
I recommend these for anyone looking for a stock replacement shock. Quality, Price, Fit, and Feel of the car all get a thumbs up from me.

Are you running any stock shocks with extended top hats on any of your lowered cars, and also what shocks you recommend for a lowered ef??
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have extended top hats on my 90 Civic DX with Koni shocks, my 91 Civic Si with Tokico Blues, and on the rear on my 91 Civic sedan. I only have the rear on my sedan because it has the shortened Skunk2 Shocks. If you can afford it, I recommend the Koni's. The Tokico Blues feel good too on my Si and those are OEM size so you need top hats for those. I've read many good things about Tokico Illumina's but haven't used them yet. Those are also dampening adjustable like the Koni.

Hello! I am upgrading to skunk2 Coilovers. Do I need a spring compressor to take out the whole shock/spring assembly?
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 7 жыл бұрын
If you are using the coilover sleeves on your stock shocks, then you can use the spring compressor. But I've done many on EF's before and didn't use the compressor. I just put a small pile of towels over and in front of the top hat when it was ready to pop off.

@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 8 жыл бұрын
For the price it's a good shock, gets the job done. If you plan on going low then I wouldn't suggest it, I imagine they'll blow pretty quickly. A small drop would be ok with some extended top hats.
@B._Smith

Whats a decent pair of shocks struts for a 91 wagon (RT) keeping stock height.
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 6 жыл бұрын
+B. Smith Honestly I'd look into some KYB or Tokico blues for stock height. I really like the Blues at a lowered height with extended top hats. At stock height I imagine they are even better. I'm not sure if those companies make OEM replacement size though since that rear shock has such a low mounting point compared to all the other EF models.
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 5 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you could lower it depending on the mounts you use. There are plenty k swapped EF's out there lowered.
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 5 жыл бұрын
And then run some decently beefy tires. Most K cars need traction anyway and a bigger tire will help with height too.

@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 8 жыл бұрын
+CarlosNike I'd look at some decent shocks, something that is a shortened shock so you don't need to pay for extended top hats. Then find some coilovers that suit your needs. Summit Racing sells pairs of individual coils where you can pick the spring rate. Is this just to lower the car for looks? Is ride quality important?
@Carlos-bc4gl

+Jon Widmer do you think you can possibly link me to either?
@GarageBuiltHondas
@GarageBuiltHondas 8 жыл бұрын
+CarlosNike I wouldn't go too low otherwise it will be a bad ride no matter what you use. Search in google, see what kind of prices you can find for whatever shocks you feel like you can afford. Then try summitracing.com for some individual selected coils with a spring rate of your choosing. For a daily, I wouldn't suggest anything heavier than 350 front and maybe like 250 rear. That'll still be a little more stiff but not crazy at all.

@GarageBuiltHondas 5 жыл бұрын
Copied and pasted - When it comes to suspension, almost everyone has read or heard the term ‘extended top hats.’ But what do they actually do? On most Honda/Acura chassis, the top of the strut is bolted directly to a factory ‘top hat.’ This OEM piece allows the whole damper assembly to be mounted through the shock tower. When using our extended top hats, the top mounting point of the shock itself is raised up farther through the shock tower, while still the entire damper still mounts in the factory position. Contrary to what some have heard, this does NOT lower your car any more than the OEM top hat does. This is because the distance from the bottom of your shock tower to the lower perch of your shock (where your spring rests) is still exactly the same. It DOES, however, give you much more shock travel. This eliminates bottoming out issues and prolongs the life of your shock.
