My father used to speak of hoardes of Chinese soldiers blowing small trumpets as they attacked the British & American lines during the Korean War. The desription may suggest its a replica of such instruments & needless to say, blown en masse, they were very intimidating. Needless to say they would have to be small & light so as not to impede the advance, not to mention cheap to produce. The reed makes sense too, it would be difficult to create a correct embouchure during a battle charge!

I prefer the sound without the reed. With the reed it is simply a whistle on steroids.

Both the American and British armies have long used police whistles for short distance signaling and communication on the battlefield. Maybe this little horn served the same purpose in the Chinese army. During the Korean war, the Chinese army soldiers routinely blew bugles during infantry assaults.

This must be one of those wind instruments the percussion section plays for novelty sounds. It goes right along side the slide whistle and the wooden train whistle perfectly.

Not expensive, wood with slip on taper metal bell. Your shalmei, shawm has similar bulb horn reed for each pipe as what you show.

I saw an antique trumpet on E-bay about the same size. It was a straight brass cone with a loop of tubing and some fake valve cases soldered to one side. Almost $300.
