Ebay Finds: The Rare 5-Fan "Super Overclocked" Graphics Card

6 жыл бұрынWe've spoken about the unique 5 fan GTX 680 in the past, but thanks to the power of second hand auction sites I was able to track down one of these now pretty rare behemoths. This is Gigabyte's Super Overclock 680 and back in 2012 it was the most expensive, and most powerful Kepler GPU on the market.
I paid a pretty reasonable sum for this one, but does it work and just how loud is it?

My friend used to run two of these in SLI, apparently that configuration performed really well for a long time and he didn't need to upgrade the graphics until last year when he grabbed a GTX 1080.

@i i Ever since RGB came for the computer parts in 2015, I called it bullshit. First it started in 2014 with Corsair's RGB keyboard and that was understandable. I still think RGB is an excuse to make prices higher.

Tinkle Ass same here. I think the RGB looks dumb. It’s like when underglow was popular in car culture. It looked cool for a time, but quickly died off because people decided that their cars shouldn’t look like Christmas trees

I actually owned this card in my last PC rig, it's not as loud as some people actually think and for when it was released, it was quite capable of course.

thegreatcalvinio Plastic black? in 1940? Germans did the nice white alien shaped computer, beige colors are the german design made it to all systems! All PC's did a German design in the 1970 to 1990! Siemens did that because it was better for Humans to work on, Germans did build the original computer on von neumann, Siemens white beige design in 1935! Read more, cry less!

It was actually a decent cooler. But the size and noise was appauling. On avg it had 10-15 degrees lower than competition

but I think all common vertical mounting kits are dual slot designs. this tripple slot card wouldn't fit.

This card would probably do well in the cases that were more common upon its release, many cases back then had fan slots on the side panel for extra airflow

McG Tech side panel holes, card needs a modern PC, not some 1995 Gateway 2000 case, not that old. GTX 680 was just the card gamers needed back them, weird fans only, not wacky.

Don't think it would fit. Stuff like the actual GPU die, the memory chips, VRMS etc are on completely different positions

not sure but i think that, that cooler is inefficient, the new coolers on modern GPU's are much more efficient and in turn much better for cooling than that thing is, regardless of it's size, especially liquid cooled gpus (with a small radiator still being smaller) making that old truck radiator quite pointless

We have one of these cards, we used it in a movie computer, then set it aside as a backup card just in case me or my dads card broke. We have it listed on ebay as of the 15th of may for auction. Sad to see a card that I used for years go.

Thanks for the video. I almost picked this card up back then but came to my senses when I remembered that little fans make a crap ton of noise. Instead I grabbed the ASUS GTX 680 DirectCU II O.C. and it's currently on display on top of my desk until I build this older PC using the Q9650 and ASUS P5Q-PRO. Sure there will be a bottle neck but I will be able to use the card and that's what I'm looking forward to.

I absolutely miss those old crazy and quirky designs. This does not really happen anymore... old cards had crazy stuff like the "Herculez x4", "Phantom", "Fury X mini" , "super overclock" and many more. I wish they would make crazy custom designs again. The only special ones i see nowadays are pink plastic ones with waifu stickers on it.... -.-

WOW the nostalgia i had two of those in SLI on my FX 9590 back in 2015. that was my most expensive PC ive ever owned it would run todays triple A titles with ease. i would trade my 12900KS 3090Ti system for that old PC. once again thanks again for yet another BLAST from the past RG

The power draw on older cards is absurd, with that kind of power it makes a considerable amount of heat. GPU manufacturing is getting a lot better, just look at the power draw of the 10 series cards. Power efficiency makes a difference.

Jose Cervantes Actually the old cards were a fuck ton more power efficient then the new cards today lulwhat? a GTX 680 only consumed like a max of like..275-300w total system power consumption. a GTX 1060/RX 580 also consumes around 275-300w total system power consumption. More power efficient my ass. The only thing we've managed to do is increase performance with the same amount of power being used. Being power efficient would mean we'd be going down in power usage with better performance. Take a GTX 1070Ti for example, that can consume as much as 400w and a 1080Ti can go all the way to 500w. Yet just a couple of years ago, the top of the line cards were only consuming in the range of 200-300w and we thought that was way to much...lol if only they knew how it is today.

+lucas rem Wattage isn't heat. That's TDP. TDP = how much watts are converted into heat. Watts = how much power the card uses.

In DirectX12 and Vulkan, exceeding VRAM budget is fundamentally quite painful! Well technically it's application-dependent since applications could potentially take this into account better, but they won't, because that's too much work to get right. Not the case in DirectX9/10/11/OpenGL at all, where the texture storage is driver/system-managed and the textures are generally RAM-backed, so you can get partial swapping of the per-frame texture pool without readbacks.

Yup, because DX12 and Vulkan require game engine developers to take over a large part of what used to be the graphics driver developer's work, proper support for both older and newer cards is not automatically guaranteed anymore. And how games react to unsupported graphics cards will vary much more from game to game, and generally be a lot less predictable.

Siana Gearz You meant the DX12 support on gen 6 Geforce products, cash is handled in many ways by Cuda, many ways to do multiple frames and share cash over frames. Most titles are not that advanced, PS4 levels, able to release it on all! All you did needed was some GTX 1080 level card! Now, are you getting that RTX now?

make holes in the sidepanel exactly where the 4 fans are, make it like a duct, then the card always gets cold air from outside the case, that's amazing.

Thanks for properly editing the audio levels to be even. It made it actually sound not that bad. My EVGA 2070 XP sounds louder in person. I set my fan curve to be aggressive though as that thing gets hot. (Got it before the pandemic / shortage... still $700 CAD new)

-Buys video card with extreme air cooler on it. -Removes air cooler. -Replaces with water cooling block. Noise problem solved & made extreme air cooler redundant.

Keep in mind! Back in 2012 side windows weren't even a thing! Everyone was running cooler master and had exhaust fans at the side panel with intake in front and buttom

Gigabyte has (well, had, actually) most innovative and crazy cooling designs out there. I still have 2 Gigabyte Radeons HD6770 Silent Cell passively cooled cards with MASSIVE radiators on them, that would not fit in every case out there. I had them cross-fired, one later died but the other one still kicking in my wife's computer and that rad is really effective. Windforce series are also very cool (pun intended)

This is the best GPU you ever reviewed, for gamers weird! This is the content nerdy people like. GK104-400, it's just a standard chip, not one of these GK 100 cards, this is meant for gaming. No overkill VRM design needed, just an overkill cooling solution, needed? Used? It is still running, were all my GTX 680 cards went dead.

Nvidia's 600 series GTX cards were absolute champions, it's a shame that they're no longer supported... My first gaming PC was an MSI GT70 laptop, back in August 2013 (the PC itself came out in late 2012), which had a GTX 675MX with 4gb of VRAM. I managed to play almost any game I threw at it with very near 60fps until January of 2021, when I finally put together enough of a budget to get a desktop PC with newer hardware (had to go with a 2080super, since the shortage had already begun, but at least I got it at under MSRP, so there's that)

I bought one of these for Borderlands 2 when it came out. It sounded cool at first but then got a bit annoying by the fan noise. But it was a unique beast that I loved.

A GPU from a time when the case side panels mounted a fan instead of glass; when durability and performance were marketed instead of lights and plastic. It was a time when things actually made sense. A time where you could build a PC without going into BIOS more than once.

Nice find. I'm a sucker for good hardware too. Without a dB meter, it would help to keep talking over the noise cuts to show the relative gain over normal speaking voice.

I owned a gtx 660 OC Twin Frozr 3, up until a month ago, when I upgraded to a 1070 ti. Funny enough, my own benchmarks I performed before selling it show better results than what you have on this 680 "super overclocked" - so this is really not worth the money, as the performance is similar, if not worse, compared to a 660 oc. A quick note, the 600 series struggles with any kind of antialiasing, so turning it off completely in any game will yeld spectacular improvements in fps
