Hi, in this 'trying to fix' video I attempt to repair a Nintendo Switch that I purchased from eBay. It was sold as not able to power on.
Will it be fixable?
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

Someone tried to mod the Switch. The moment I saw the eBay listing and it said "UNPATCHED", I knew straight away. It looks like the previous owner tried to mod it with RCM. The fact it also had a 256gb memory card inside also gives it away. Just as a side note... I've seen those exact memory cards on Wish and Aliexpress. Its most likely counterfeit and not 256gb. Its possible the previous owner didn't know this when trying to push a payload and it could have corrupted the SYSNAND.

@Raymakht05 Thats how fake cards work. They are flashed to trick the device into thinking they have more storage than they do.

@@alexig1025 It overwrites the old data when new data comes in. If you try to write 32 GB of data to a card that's actually 16GB, it'll only have the last 16GB (definately corrupted) of data there.

Well done @My Mate VINCE, It`s not an easy connector to replace, You just needed a bit more solder on the pads ( like a nice puffy pillow on the whole pad) I use the edge of my table so I don`t have to deal with working in the air and my roll of solder to hold the board down on the far edge of the board, Thank you again for the mention. You're soldering skills are way better now, You can really call you`re self a pro now, Like I say anyone can do this just needs the basic understanding of electronics, "No one is born with knowledge it acquired and gained through experience "

I have seen this error before. It, for me, was storage related. First of all, I echo the sentiments about that SD card: it could be fake. Try a known working one. I don’t think this will solve your issue, however. I believe that you need to get in contact with the seller. Unlike those commenting, I can ASSURE you 100% that this Switch is NOT banned. You showed as much when you checked if the Switch was up to date. On a banned Switch, you can’t access Nintendo servers at all. Not even to check if your system is up to date. I know this because I have a banned Switch. The eMMC module (internal storage) of the Switch is married to its motherboard. I was working on my nephews Switch using parts from my working one to diagnose the issue and I got mine and his internal storage modules mismatched. In this configuration, I got an error just like the one you’re seeing. Switching the internal eMMC modules allowed the Switch to opperate properly. If the seller took apart the two Switches, it’s possible the two eMMC modules got mixed up. Providing the seller was ignorant of the fact that the parts aren’t interchangeable, it is very possible that it was a simple, non-malicious, mistake. The seller may be able to facilitate the swapping of the eMMC modules between you and the other buyer if it proves correct that this is the issue. Or, if you get in contact with the other buyer, and highly dependant upon the generation of the Switches in question, the other seller and you could use Hekate to pull a backup copy of the nand and send it via email and then use that selfsame program to overwrite the nand on your respective eMMC modules. Or, this error may be caused by a faulty conntection of the storage mediums in question. Or it maybe be something else entirely. All I really know is that when I got this error (same exact issues-even the white screen) it was due to my putting the wrong eMMC module into the wrong Switch. No matter the issue, I hope you see success with a solution. Cheers.

Accidentally swapping two eMMC's is possible, but remember in intro: Vince saw that this guy was selling two faulty Switches, not sure if the same issue. If this error is genuinely caused by using the wrong internal storage. then there's no way Vince can track down the customer of the seller's second Switch to rectify this, nor do I believe the seller has backed up the NAND backup of this specific Switch.

Hmmm, that's proper strange about that last fault. If you have the kit to stick it in RCM mode ( hacking it ) see if it will boot up Linux, it could be something to do with the main NAND. As for your work with that screen connector, good effort indeed, I managed to do that tiny Apple one I was telling you about in exactly the same way, 36 pins of hell, I don't recommend it, but thanks to watching your videos, I knew how to remove it with a heat gun from underneath ;)

Yea I think it was a hacked switch that was either banned or had some type of corruption issue when they hacked or not updated properly if running CFW specially since It had 256 GB SD card, with that big of an SD card coupled with what's wrong with it I have a feeling it was a hacked switch gone wrong, might be able to reinstall the firmware through CFW, not an expert myself just a hobbyist theory.

Hey Vince, I really appreciate the time you give us! I have learned so much! Also just a tip to try on some old stuff before you go trying it on a real repair. I found that using a long strip of kapton tape on stuck to a connector with a tail to pull on usually 4-5” to keep your fingers away from the heat gets connectors off easily without damaging them, same goes for reinstalling them you can line them up and put pressure with the tweezers and use hot air to heat the board and solder joints. Just a thought anyways. I hope it helps you in the future! I used to take good connectors from iPhone, iPad, iPod boards with kapton tape and just stick them right on where there used to be a damaged lego style connector. Thanks again! From North Carolina.

Great vid vince, tip, when applying solder for the LCD connector, ball the solder up on your tip and lot's of flux on the pads, you don't want the tip touching the pads, you'll get lovely pillows this way, if the tip touches you'll wipe them away. Minor criticism..... your quite rough with the wick, i only metion it because I've seen so many with pulled pads for people doing it like this, should be no resistance otherwise it's effectively sandpaper. Game-cart issues: check resistance to ground on a donor, i don't think it should be that low from memoy think it should be in the K's, remove chip and check again etc.

How frustrating. Definitely sounds like it has been previously hacked, and the fact that you've connected it to your account and updated the firmware has alerted the Nintendo police and the console has been banned. The 256GB card would also point to someone having alot of games (that they probably don't own) I think the only way to fix it would be to "update" it again, but with the latest custom firmware. Having said all of that, I'm obviously not an expert, but that would be my uneducated guess 😁

I also wondered about this! I don't know how the OS works in the Switch, but I do know on the Wii they used iOS libraries and the versions could end up incorrect when soft modded incorrectly which would result in lots of stuff just not loading or crashing etc. Maybe they carried forward a similar kind of OS and it is perhaps half updated for homebrew, breaking compatibility with lots of stuff?!?

There is no jailbreak for switch, RCM payload injection is done on a boot by boot basis, so once it's off it's no longer booted into that rcm payload and needs to be sent again, it's not permanent without a hardware device installed inside of it System bricking or bricked would mean no power on at all too There's also no softmod as many people keep claiming, it's a hardware injected payload, either via pc, phone or another device, it cannot be done without a hardware device on each boot

It looks like this switch was previously hacked and running a softmod, hence the reason it appeared like the switch had been factory reset when you first switched it on, as the last owner was maybe booting with those hardware jig things to start the tegra chip in service mode. It looks like the softmod has caused corruption or something very wrong with the software side, and now isn't starting games. Maybe if you can re-mod it you can get around the problem with softmods and such and get the switch to play games again Excellent work on fixing the switch physically though!! Great vid

There is no such thing as a softmod, RCM payloads are injected on a one time basis, unless you have a modchip installed it has to be sent at every turn on from off with some form of hardware, whether that be a sam86 or phone or pc or some other device, Atmosphere is having issues with 11.0 and gamecarts, but this isn't running atmosphere nor is it running 11.0 software.

In 30 or so repairs I've had this issue once, I managed to get it working but only by downloading all the ID keys and rebuilding the firmware on a brand new chip. Unrelated to the switch issue, but that micro SD card is likely fake. Lots of those are being sold on ebay marketed with high capacities, but in reality they're only somewhere between 8-32gb and their firmware hacked to show the high capacity. One way to test this is with a tool called "h2testw", which will write to the whole thing, try to read it, and then figure out how much data the sd card could actually hold.

Thanks Operational, I don't think I will be getting this fixed before it goes fully live. The fault is even stranger than the video suggests....I have been buying up very cheap games on the Nintendo eShop (some only 8p!!!) and out of about 6 of the new games 3 of them work perfectly. The other 3 new games exhibit the same faulty behaviour. I have made the Switch my primary console and it makes no difference. I don't think I will be getting to the bottom of this one unfortunately.

@@Mymatevince This sounds like a problem with the firmware, as the same thing happens when you modded a Switch with a custom firmware and don't update the "sigpatches" for the newest firmware. Some games will work, some won't as they need new keys. If this Switch was modded, then maybe the previous owner installed a newer firmware via homebrew and it failed. Maybe that's also why it was reset to factory settings, as the previous owner tried to fix the broken firmware. If you can, check if the Switch is one of the earlier models that can be modded. This can be done via the serial number, if you still have that. The maybe try reflashing the firmware. Oh, and this Switch isn't banned in any way. If it was, you wouldn't be able to access the eShop at all. Even if it was, you would still be able to launch games that you already installed or physical own. Hope that helps and thanks for another great video!

@@_Offline That's interesting, but Vince bought this off eBay without any knowledge that it was modded, if it even is. Usually when homebrewing devices, one would have a backup of the firmware before writing a custom firmware to the Switch, but what if you don't have it? I'm not sure if you can use any other Switch's backed up firmware to restore it. In a simple scenario, from eBay Vince did get plenty of working hardware with a faulty NAND/motherboard.

I haven't finished watching the video but I think I already know what the problem is. It's possible they enabled something called "AutoRCM", which makes it more convenient to boot into hack payloads, but effectively bricks the Switch as far as normal booting is concerned. This would explain why it was drawing power as if it were turned on even though it doesn't appear to be; a Switch in RCM looks the same as a Switch that's turned off. Try following the instructions on switch.hacks.guide for booting a payload, except when it tells you to use the jig and hold down Volume+ and Power to boot into RCM, just push Power, no jig required. If I'm correct, it'll work, and you should be able to boot into a payload to disable AutoRCM. Or to boot CFW. *EDIT:* Actually now that I see it works in docked mode; this wouldn't be the problem.

Hi vince, I would look and see if the console is unpatched with the serial number. If it is unpatched then use one of those recovery mode clips that slot down the right hand side joycon rail. Look up using Hekate and follow the instructions with the recovery mode clip. You will be able to identify what is wrong with Hekate. Either read up or use KZfaq theres plenty of information. I strongly recommend backup the entire memory card, just in case the information is contained on there. Otherwise you might have a switch that you can not unbrick. If you have accidentally formatted sd card then use one of those sd recovery programs to try and find the files. Also gbatemp or maxconsole forum members may be able to help you. Best of Luck ....hopefully this is going to be interesting on the revisit.

You need to either reflash the entire stock firmware or reinstall a softmod. If it was modded and the system was updated it'll clock down the game slot so no type of game will work.

You shouldve tried to play games the first time you saw it was docking because the seller said it was unpatched so maybe he tried some sort of jailbreaking and wasnt succesfull and it was playing games fine and when you updated it , you bricked it or something, if you are not succesfull with fixing it with official software ,i suggest to you , maybe you can try jailbreaking it idk , there is no loss if it doesnt work properly with official software.Hope you see this comment great fix btw you are awesome

As i mentioned about half year ago, with that soldering method you MUST unplug NAND it's creates tension on the NAND-connector and when you heat it from the other side it can get loose, check it, mb that the reason why it can't play games. Look from PC what is on the SD card that will give you an idea if console was Jailbroken.

Current Firmware version for the switch should be 11.0.0 though, as of December 1st, so perhaps taking out the memory card and then resetting the console to factory defaults could help?
@8bit_coder
@8bit_coder 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, something is definitely wrong. Perhaps the 10.2 version it shows was the version the owner tried to unsuccessfully push a payload to the switch, and it ended up corrupting the internal storage in a way where the horizon menu works fine but anything system-intensive like launching a game fails.

The errors at the end were very interesting, were you using the 256gb sd card that came with it? If it was a no brand card maybe it was fake.. Also I think switch bans only apply to online things, if this switch had been banned you wouldn't be able to access the eshop at all. This could also be an issue with the NAND chip, if it is its actually possible to swap it out too. In any case good luck figuring it out!

That may not actually be at 256 gig SD most the time people buy really cheap SD cards that say they’re this huge amount but really they’re only a small amount they’ve been tricked on the control to read something that they’re not actually now that I think about it it is technically I don’t know for sure possible that that could’ve caused the problem that we have on the switch.

Nintendo can either "ban" the entire console from any online activities or "simply" ban an account. In your case I don´t think that your switch is really banned for you could not update your console to the newest firmware version in that case - and definitely you could not download or buy new games. I guess it must be some software (firmware) modding which has gone wrong somehow and now the system software simply is somehow corrupted so the console acts in the strange way you have experienced, very hard to tell, really...

@My Mate VINCE I know that behavior, it happens when a Switch board has been de-modded but one forgot to run the clean-up utility before removing the modchip from the Switch board. I think it's safe to say this Switch will be useless, unless you wanna reinstall the mod only to run the cleanup utility, then remove it again and see how it goes.

Its either one of two things, the internal memory chip is damaged or someone has hacked the OS before. I ended up with one that was bricked and used software from the homebrew community to reflash the official software. When I initially reflashed the software it was an older version than what it originally had installed so I could only boot it with the rcm jig and it gave a similar error and and refused to play games of any kind till I made it update to the newest OS version. It quite honestly could be an error with the fuse check.

If you face similar issue next time would you try to jail break it first then check if it is banned or other software issue before you update it with latest firmware. Jail break might give you a last chance to fix software.
