Our hydronic diesel heater failed again just before our winter vanlife road trip started. Can we fix our diesel heater before winter vanlife? What is wrong with our diesel hydronic diesel heater, and will it cost a lot to fix our diesel heater in our campervan? Are we prepared for full-time winter vanlife with our diesel heater?

I understand that the location and position is vertically, but for the ais intake, often in the installation manuals are noted that the intake must have a U shape before going in to the heater and at the bottom of the U, a small 2-3mm hole drilled to drain the water. That is easy when the Eber is horizontly. Maybe a longer pipe and make a an U somewhere on the frame and then go in to the heater.

Thing is you are correct, and that's exactly what we had, there was a small drain hole in the air intake in that u bend but this still happened? Very strange...

@@FreedomStrider Maybe you drove thru a big puddle? 🙂 Maybe make a spoiler/ plate/ case to protect the heater it self. The wire corroded because water was under the plastic case covers. One way is from the intake pipe, the other the harsh environment under the van. Eber cases are not water tight by any means. Usually on passenger cars, the heaters are behind wheel arch liner covers to protect it from the water splashes.

Aye we've made a customer deflector but I think we did drive through a big puddle at some point and this got water in the heater. Once water is inside it will corrode the wire and poof!

Really interesting video and well done for getting it fixed. Please use a socket (7mm?) though for tightening your hose clips to avoid stabbing your finger when the screwdriver slips! Coincidentally I have the same system on my Crafter and had a lot of problems getting it working properly. Stuart and co were very helpful with fixing it. I will be underneath the van before we go out again though to make sure everything is waterproofed! I’m going to find a way of fitting a drain valve somewhere for the glycol as well.

Yeah I should have used my 7mm, and a drain valve is an excellent idea, much better than my hack and cut the pipe to drain in 🤣 we did think about adding one this time but we didn't have time as we were starting to freeze 🥶 Stuart was great indeed, great service !!

Sam: If you don't mind a suggestion. Get more intake hose and route the heaters air intake up under the "Hood, "bonnet some where as high as your batteries, in a dry place. Leave that pipe where it is and you risk sucking up snow!

Bring the intake up into the van was an idea we had, which would be dry all the time, that just another hole in the van. But as you say, the intake is still low, so we may still reroute it

I've bought the same heater as you (from the same place, it seems - I've had several long chats with Stuart!), but not yet fitted it (it was going to be the last job of the year, but it got too cold). What I've learned from this video is make sure it's easily removeable! I think I'll put taps/valves on the coolant hoses so I won't need to drain the whole system down in the event of a problem! This does come back to the question I asked on a previous video of yours about the location of the air intake and whether it should be pointing up or down. Glad it's all resolved for you and that it wasn't too expensive.
@FreedomStrider

Yes yes YES! Put valves 100%. We didn't have time to do it this time around, but shutoff valves and air bleeder valves are a must. But yes it seems the air intake must point slightly downwards. :)

Great tip! We didn't have the time to troubleshoot our heater, but if we had taken it apart ourselves, replacing the glow plug doesn't seem a complicated task - we had a good service and team so we used it this time and it was a quick turnaround but having spare parts is good for next time (or a backup heater, but for us that might be expensive!)

After seeing your install videos we’ve bought the same system as you. Our uf pipes are laid but we haven’t installed the heater yet, waiting for warmer weather. 😜. Do you have any words of advice or suggestions of how you would do it differently now if starting again?
@FreedomStrider
@FreedomStrider Жыл бұрын
That's so exciting 😄 Main improvement would be to add isolator valves on the ports coming out the heater and a drain valve... also an air bleeding valve somewhere on the inside pipes (best and the highest point)... so more valves 😅. They mainly help with maintenance, the system works without them but would save you headaches later. If you can route the air intake somewhere where no water can get to it, it will save you lots of worry (would suggest the engine bay, but you may need a longer pipe). And it's best practices to build an outside protective box to shield the cables and heater from the road. Good luck, let us know how it all goes 😊

I do have a different diesel heater which I gladly installed myself as I had to take it apart twice to switch the glow plug, which I got cheap from eBay. It is pretty damn annoying, especially if you really need it! I now have a spare one just incase, as it can get very cold in the North of Scotland!

Having some spare parts is a great idea, at least if this problem comes up again, we should be able to fix it. Just when it happens for the first time and throws you off guard in winter it's a bit disorentating, luckily we got the heater back just before that cold week not too long ago!

@@FreedomStrider aye, I was very lucky as I was parked at a beautiful spot in no where that I didn't really wanted to leave. But people who lived in this area offered to help as one is a electrician and had a barn where we could take the heater apart and I wasn't left alone with annoyance. Instead I was excited to fix it. It's my understanding that the glow plugs on the German models go out far less frequently than the Chinese knockoffs. I posted a question on a related FB group about what spare parts to have on hand for this same Espar unit and I basically got laughed at. :/

I think I know why you are getting water in your heater, it's because it's mounted outside of your van. It's from condensation, when the heater starts to cool down in cold outside temperatures condensation forms on the metal parts inside the heater. I wonder if cold air is getting into the inside of the heater though the air intake as the heater is cooling down.
@FreedomStrider
@FreedomStrider Жыл бұрын
These heaters are designed to be mounted externally, though what you've said makes, I don't know quite know what to do about it as we can't mount the heater inside. Maximum we could direct the air intake inside I guess?

Hey you 2. Sorry it's not a question related to this vid but I'm sure I remember seeing a video where u solved the problem of a slow draining sink with the addition of a part in the drain line? What was the part??? I can't for the life of me find the video you discussed it on.
@FreedomStrider
@FreedomStrider Жыл бұрын
Our problem with the slow draining was caused by an S loop in the drain line as drainage works with gravity. Generally, the sink flow is not strong enough to displace the water and move in along the drain pipe so it just backs up. We cut the line so it was draining straight out and then added another grey tank that allows for the pipe to go straight. Also, you need an air hole in you grey tank or the sink can back up again. This is the video where we test the issue kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d5Z_oceqybbYlZs.html In march we are releasing the full plumbing upgrade vid, as we have done our shower and the new grey tank is shown there. You are welcome to email us if you need more help or photos, we know plumbing can be a pain 😊

@@goonluv The £100 Chinese units are air heaters. That's it. The Eberspacher device is a hydronic heater - it heats a liquid which can then be used to heat water in a calorifier, for underfloor heating, for radiators and for blown air heating using a heater matrix with a fan behind it. As a result of all this, the Eberspacher unit does more things and is far more flexible. From some of the figures I've seen, the Eberspacher units are also more efficient. You are right about the cost though - all this efficiency and flexibility (and the backup of a large multinational company) come at a price and they cost significantly more than £100. You can achieve some of the Eberspacher's functions with a Chinese heater, but you have to buy additional heat kit (see Bobil Vans, they've designed their own heat exchangers) - this kit costs more than the heater does in the first place and it's still far less efficient than an Eberspacher. I'm not rubbishing the Chinese heaters - I know several people who have them and think they're great, but they do serve a completely different purpose to the Eberspacher units.
