I’m listening in 2022🔥🔥🔥 big up to this steel band!
@RageKroc888 Жыл бұрын
I just want to say I stumbled across this a couple years ago and I KEEP coming back to it. Something about steel drums resonates in my soul (despite my South African heritage) I'll never forget this band nor this footage as long as I live. This is always the final party tune I listen too.

I'm speechless. I've been playing music for 30+ years and that is hands down the sickest performance I've ever watched / heard.
@Phaota Жыл бұрын
At old as you are by now, using "sickest" isn't a slang that should be in your vocabulary. That's for kids these days that don't understand it is a negative connection, not a positive one.
@llamapicante Жыл бұрын
@@Phaota I bet you're fun at parties.
@Phaota Жыл бұрын
@@llamapicante Actually, I am, but that doesn't excuse using negative words for positive ones.
@llamapicante Жыл бұрын
@@Phaota if you do the math, you'd realize that "sick" as part of colloquial vocabulary is well within the bounds of someone with 30 ish years of musical experience. Means I was in high school in the early 90s. As in, I grew up listening to punk and a little band called "Beastie Boys" who have a tiny album named "Ill Communication". But sure, bud. I'll go check myself due to my advanced age.
@Phaota Жыл бұрын
@@llamapicante "Sick" wasn't used in the 90s like it has become today. I never said you were of an "advanced age", just that you are old enough not to be using the off-slang of kids today. In the case of the Beastie Boys song, the term was used as a negative, as in "Got To Straighten My Thoughts, I'm Thinking Too Much Sick Sh*t".

Wow. These guys blew me *away* ! Beautiful work! And their conductor (not sure what his title would be in Trinidad steel drum tradition) seemed to going through an ecstatic religious experience after a while! LOL They chose a great song to blow the crowd away with and I was tapping my feet, too! I'm a *huge* fan of percussion instruments (natch, I'm an occasional drummer), especially ones that you can vary the pitch to create melodies. I use my bodhran, congas and djembe that way--tune them to differing pitches in different sections and use the sounds for the tones. But, then, that's normal for those instruments, to tune them that way, I guess. But, I think I *play* them a bit differently than some do--I use the pitches to play with the tones to make melodies, something I don't think I've heard other players do. I've wanted to learn instruments like the hammered dulcimer, or the gyumang (a Tibetan version of the yangqin, the Chinese hammered dulcimer), or the percussion instruments used in the Balinese Gamelan orchestras. You want to hear something *really* outside your normal musical experience? Check out the more than 50 musical forms that exist on Bali alone, or just see if you can find a video or recording of a Ketchak--it'll blow yer mind.
