Very nice old stuff. Thanks! I went to a studentfestival in Nijmegen, The Netherlands in June 1981 where I heard and saw them for the first time. I had been a rockfan for years but their awesome new wave sound was indeed all new to me alhough I had been to several The Cure gigs already. The white lightingshow of Echo and The Bunnymen was absolutely exciting and I was a fan for two years. Crocodiles was good and Heaven Up Here is still one of my favorite albums. After that they lost their cool sound in my opinion and their concert in Paradiso, Amsterdam later on didn't impress me, but who cares. This early recording is pure, original and a good intro to their later work. Pete rest in peace man. Thank you for your real drumming.

The drum machine being named echo is a cute story but it's not quite true. The band made that bit up for the press because everyone assumed Ian, being the front man, was Echo. There was no Echo, they just liked that band name but didn't care to explain that again and again @ifutureman: nice recording. Assume it's a bootleg?

I never quite understood why the bunnymen never got a drummer in for these early gigs. Most bands would have got any old drummer rather than a drum machine. - I get that they may not have found the 'right' one but it was an odd choice to go with a machine in the late 70's.

Cuz will sergeant was inspired by the band suicide who used a cheap 60s drum machine too
@versioncity1
@versioncity1 7 ай бұрын
@@optimisticmike1041 Well thankfully they ditched that phase and got Pete in. Maybe playing live without a proper drummer could have been a factor, it is sort of ok on a record as it gives it a certain sound, but live and especially with Pete, it moves the energy up tenfold.

@@nocnoc4526 ?? Joy division was active from 1976-1980... Rolling Stone: "What other bands have stood out for you in the past 30 years?" Stage presence and putting on a show maybe but I don't hear Joy Division when listening to the Bunnymen. For the record, I saw both bands live in 79 EATB in September and JD Oct/Nov.
@c.anderson3444
@c.anderson3444 2 жыл бұрын
@@nocnoc4526 nice you were lucky. I saw the Bunnymen twice but not at their best music period. I saw them in Chicago at the Aragon after they went commercial. And also saw the Church, Cure, Shriekback.. all were commercialized by then but still decent shows. Shriekback had the best performance in a small club. Yeah Echo&BM didn't ever really sound like Joy Division in their polished studio albums, but in this recording they were trying hard IMO. They were one of the best based on only the material from their first 3 albums, again imo. I like them better than Joy Division actually. Regret never seeing Bauhaus, Siouxse, the Sound, Fad and Joy Division during those great times...many those guys are gone now but their influence and music lives on.
