Boiled Botanicals - a plant-based eco nature project ...
During the Covid-19 outbreak in Summer 2020, we were limited to our immediate surroundings and I'm lucky enough to live next to the River Clyde and the old woodlands by Bothwell Castle, south of Glasgow, Scotland.
Over the three years I've lived in this place, I've developed a strong relationship to this land + the trees, plants and river. Collecting the offerings from the ground post storm and harvesting a few leaves and flowers, with permission from the plants themselves, I set about working on some eco prints using Khadi cotton rag paper and a Moleskine watercolour sketchbook.
Each set involved boiling the pages for 3 hours and the first time I spontaneously added soy milk to the water, though I'm not sure this had any effect. The second batch, I used a mix of 50/50 water + vinegar sprayed on each page, and dipped the plant materials in a bath of water, with a couple of teaspoons of alum powder added.
I was inspired by Susan Brooks' book: Eco-Dyed Art Journals : amzn.to/3eRNa14*
This project was first broadcast as part of the additional inspiration for the Midsummer module of the Mandala Magic: ALIGNMENT art + journal program : www.juliegibbons.com/creative...
Music composed + performed live by Martin Gibbons:
Track 1 : Bracken
Track 2 : River

Thanks so much for sharing this with us..I'm so glad to have been able to catch it . Forgive me for confusing which batch was which but are the prints that came out with the more grey/blue tones the ones you pre=sprayed the pages with 50/50 vinegar water solution ? The page on the left at the 12:37 mark looks like a horse's head I love it... & I agree was meditative with the music as well very well done. Does Martin have a page/playlist of his music or is it just a personal hobby enjoyment?

No probs, Kristi - glad you enjoyed :) The grey/blue tones occurred in the batch with the vinegar/water solution sprayed on the pages, yes. Also - the plant life was immersed in a water/alum bath. I understand it's best to let the water/vinegar dry before inserting the plant life, but I was a wee bit impatient. I think the overall result would be better if I was a wee bit more patient! p.s. Martin's music is a personal project - you can see more of this wee batch of Scottish work created during lockdown here: kzfaq.info/sun/PLTAkLKfQZ8COfx2a7lFxH_o67R9FQi1jx Enjoy!

Hi Julie, I am part of your Alignment 2022 class and found this video on your website. Please would you share the “recipe” for what you soaked the flowers in before loading them into the Moleskine bound book? And then, what was in the bath you lowered the book into? It looks like a beautiful process and when things finally start to bloom here I will have access to beautiful wildflowers. I very much want to try this. I’m unclear on what you do with the book once you take it out of the bath. Does it just take days and days to dry? And at what point do the flowers get removed from in between the pages? I can go rewatch the video… I think I must’ve missed something really important. Beautiful work! Thanks!

Hi Robin - good to see you here. There's an invite to use this technique in the Midsummer module for Alignment :) The 'recipes' I used are listed in the show notes underneath the video. The book listed in the notes has all the info I used! You remove the flowers after boiling the pages. It took a good few days for my Moleskine to dry out. It really is a wonderful process - please do try it out and enjoy xo

Hi Suzanne - Khadi cotton papers - both loose and bound and a Moleskine watercolour journal. Loved both 💙🌀

What do you bind the paper between that keep them so nice and flat?

Hi Patti - I used some aluminium tiles. You could use ceramic tiles or wood.... When the papers were dry, I piled a load of heavy books on top for a few days and I also ironed the pages afterwards to help them flatten out even more :)
