Just installed this in my home quite recently, and it's already made a huge difference in terms of averaging out the temperature. With our old, dumb thermostat, we'd have wild temperature fluctuations where the house would either get too hot, or stay too cold without the heat kicking in. I also like how I can have just the fan kick in from time-to-time to circulate air in the house; this is especially useful at night when the air tends to get a bit stale in closed bedrooms. Overall, pretty happy with the purchase! It was also kind of fun to install, since I had to also run a brand new furnace wire (5 wires) from the basement to the terminal upstairs. Call me weird I guess, I just like doing that kind of stuff 😄

Great video. I currently have the Nest Thermostat gen 1 but have thinking about upgrading so I can take advantage of the temperature sensors as our upstairs thermostat is located in the master bedroom behind the door, so it doesn't always run the AC as needed (our bedroom is always way cooler than the rest of the upstairs) and Nest's away feature doesn't kick in even though my wife's office is upstairs. The Ecobee sensor sounds great for that. Overall, how does the Ecobee compare to Nest thermostats? I'm also fairly deep in the Google ecosystem with Hubs, Minis, and doorbell. Worth possibly switching?

A little question off topic for this video I’ve had nest cams since day one when they were called drop cams I have them at multiple properties and three or four different people that you view and monitor them all of a sudden about a month ago we get the blue circle of death more often than is tolerable, have you noticed any problems or have you been hearing anything. Like I said I’ve had these things for probably 15 years somewhere in that neighborhood I know them top to bottom so I feel confident it’s nothing on my end.

Any updates on the delay to get status changes into Home Assistant? I used an Ecobee for a while and preferred it over Nest but live in a loft and have to run the ceiling fans based on if hvac is running. The delay to get that status was just too long and had to move back to Nest.

I just installed the Ecobee Enhanced thermostat, so far so good. But I was hoping to be able to pull up daily energy usage for the AC (amount of run time, etc). Also misread the features of the Enhanced vs the Premium, I thought the Enhanced also had the Air Quality sensor. So I'll be moving this one to my FIL's house instead. Now, trying to decide if I want to get the Premium or switch to a Nest. The room sensors are important as well. Does anyone know if Nest has a daily AC usage display or report?

Will all the settings from the previous thermostat transfer to the new thermostat - or do you have to reconfigure everything? (And by settings I mean more than Schedules… things like Minimum Run Times and Overcooling and HVAC system info)

I love the aluminum alloy metal trim plates they made for the previous generation that replaced the cheap looking plastic trim plates. I would be excited to update to this as soon as a elegant trim plate is available.

I enjoy your videos. They are always straight forward, informative and presented in a casual manner -- no theatrics or grandstanding. I also like that you include your family. Need more Aly in future vids. This video was very helpful, but correct me if I'm wrong, you failed to mention that the door/window sensors are useless without the addition of a $120/year monitoring fee. As if the $249.00 price tag wasn't steep enough, ecobee has to add insult to injury by adding a revenue stream. If the monitoring fee wasn't a factor, I'd go for the ecobee immediately. The search continues. If it's not too late to weigh in on the toast poll, my vote is "3." Please continue to produce these great videos.

If you have more than 1 ecobee installed in your home how does it work correctly,? Does your ac or furnace just constantly run since it’s colder in the lower part of your home vs warmer the higher you go on floors

I'd be curious what all would go into recreating the functionality in Home Assistant without being dependent on the cloud? I just had a multi-zone ductless system installed and was planning on doing my own "smart thermostat" kind of thing with 3rd party (probably Aqara) temperature and motion sensors in various rooms.

Toast #2 or 3 for me. Question? Do you know if you still need a prescription to use thr contact sensors to pause your ac?

Ecobee would be one of my favourites out of the off the shelf "smart" thermostats. I think they are better than Nest and other similar ones. Obviously a DIY would have every feature you want to include in it. I just think Ecobee have hit the right balance between looks and features. Now, if only someone would develop one of these style thermostats that can control an IR remote controlled mini split system or similar.

Thanks for making this video. I have a question though. If the Ecobee Smart Thermostat is in the kitchen, how does it know what termperature I have in my bedroom? With the remote sensors? are they just for motion detection or are they thermometers as well?

I have an echobee lite. It came with my used house that we bought in 2020. I had a nest (not a google nest) at my old house and I liked it more than the echobee lite. It seems that the updated echobee is like the original nest. I don’t want to spend $249 on it though.

The blue ring alone is already enticing me to upgrade. But the air quality monitor is a superb addition. Hopefully it will work with IFTTT and enable switch it to turn on my old room air filter. I pick no. 2 btw.

Dose it use a third-party server I have a vine thermostat and it keeps loosing connection and when I call them they say things like your thermostat is to old and dose not connect to your router when the problem is on there end. I don't know why we need cameras and things to go through third-party servers I remember when everything just went through my router and it work just fine

Ecobee Couldn't get my air conditioning or heater to work I returned it and grabbed the Google thermostat and today it is working great

Did you try the ecobee6 on the ecobee4 wall mount? Or do I have to replace everything? Will older room sensors work with the ecobee6?

Other than the aesthetic design of the premium, do you think it’s worth getting this one over the voice control version? I want to choose between the two but the additional $100 for the premium... just want to make sure it is worth it. In my case the voice control version came with 1 sensor for $150 and the premium is $250 with 2 sensors included. Also would love to see a video overview of the ecobee iPhone app.

Hey Reed, awesome review! I'm considering making the switch from Nest. It looks like the Home Assistant integration requires cloud connectivity, but it does with Nest too. Nest sends alerts when the power has been out for a while (cloud doesn't sense a connected device). Does ecobee have similar?

I am interested in knowing if I should replace my Ecobee 3 with this. Is this a significant upgrade over the Ecobee 3?

I've been using an Ecobee 4 with two of the remote sensors for years. Been super super happy with the product, never had any issues with it at all. I love the sensors, its so much better to cool our bedroom at night vs our entire 2000sqft house. We just moved to a new home and saw they came out with this Ecobee Premium. I had originally thought about going with Nest just for a change, but Homekit support kind of made Ecobee the way to go. And #3 for me :)

what system do you use to monitor your energy usage?

Reed... Fellow Phoenician here... can this new unit let you control temps at the quarter of the hour. I have the light, and on the phone app, I try to set mine to run from x:45 to x:00 of the next hour. During peak times I would rather pick a time than a temp. currently, even though I can select that time in the app, when you save it and everything, It just defaults to the top of the hour.

Can the touch panel be locked with the app? We need to replace my grandma’s thermostat with something digital so my mother who lives next door to her can adjust from her phone. My grandma keeps getting confused and changes it to heat or way up/down. We’ve tried digital and the old school kind but she keeps messing with all the buttons. We need to be able to keep it locked so she can’t keep turning on the heat. It’s over 100 in Texas, so that’s a big issue.

For those that have this product is your unit always warm to the touch?

I’ve had my Ecobee for about 4 years now and it’s been amazing. Sounds like it might be time to upgrade to the new model! Love the ring of color and the new esthetic look/size. And toast is def 4/5!

Toast number 4 for me; anything less is just warm bread. Glad to see Ecobee have evolved the design. The radar sensor seems to be a definite step up as well as the UI. Although, it does make me wonder if they would roll out some of the new UI design elements to the old products for consistency. Can you change Alexa's voice in the new thermostat? I'd like a different accent from mine, but it won't cooperate.

What I’m seeing and hearing based off of multiple different videos is EcoBee is affordable after rebates, feature packed, stylish, and has amazing support. Sold.

Can you set it so that if the temperature outside drops below a certain temperature, then it switches from the heat pump to Aux Heat?

The Heat/Cool Differential settings make this thermostat worth it alone. I don't understand why I can't find a single other thermostat that has fine-tuning settings like this. It's just software, why do other thermostats omit these features? I have the same gripes about Ecobee's UI as you, but there is literally no other thermostat choice if you want some fine-tuning options.

#4 or #5 for me with plenty of butter and Vegemite. Just the way us Aussies like our toast :-) I just wish we could get Ecobee support here in Australia. I purchased the Ecobee with Voice Control and had it shipped here. Alexa works on the unit but Ecobee will not release the Alexa Skill in Australia to use voice control. I did get around it by using SmartThings and linking it back to Alexa but it does increase the delay in asking for a temperature and the respose time of the Ecobee. I did also already setup door sensors through SmartThings to turn the Ecobee Off when the doors are left open too long as the kids in this house love turning the heating up Full Blast and then leaving the back door wide open

As a current echobee user, I wonder if the UI will be updated on older models or are we screwed? If so, I would eventually upgrade just for the air quality monitoring, but if the company forgets their older customers, it will happen again.

In the biz, the three-line icon is called a "hamburger menu". It is supposed to resemble the lines of text in a drop-down menu. The gear should always be "Settings" or "Preferences".

Wish I hadn't seen this. I just bought an Ecobee thermostat a month ago. Ah well, maybe they'll update the interface on the older ones.. Is this essentially plug and play if I upgrade in the future, meaning could I just take the thermostat off and pop the new one on without having to re-wire? Was a good review though :)

Some of the software feature changes (re-newed ui design for temp changes) have been ported to the older thermostat models as well, finally! I had the same experience as you with trying to change the temp - frustrating!
