In my humble opinion it is way better to buy a second hand leather bag than a "vegan leather" bag (which usually is PVC) because: 1.the leather bag already exist (no need for more energy or animals) 2. It will last longer (way more longer than a plastic bag) 3. It will biodegradate Not Everything is Black and White, sometimes you have to look further to actually know what its better.

I personally don’t want to wear a dead animals skin on my body, second hand or not. Secondly wool makes me itch 😔😔
@LisaFrisstDich6 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. I would never purchase something new that’s made out of leather or wool or whatever but if it’s secondhand, someone doesn’t want it anymore and I like it then I’ll take it. I have bought used leather shoes and they hold up really well! I don’t think it’s good to encourage the industry tho as leather is often produced with reaaally harsh chemicals and the circumstances under which it is made is so bad for the people doing it (at least that’s the mainstream leather. I don’t know much about Fairtrade companies as I’m not interested in purchasing new leather products at all) and also killing animals isn’t cool but I guess everyone has their own point of view on that. But they last so well that it’s no problem to buy second hand! So that’s cool.
@madzava39044 жыл бұрын
Dead animals! Ewww! I don’t wanna wear that! That’s disturbing and disgusting to me! This is my opinion bit no vegans would do that! Although it’s saved and already made/ used that is still horrible! I can’t even think of that!

Eleonora Dalla Chiara I would also like to know the answer to this. I'm a vegetarian but I buy second hand leather shoes as they last so much longer for me than non-leather alternatives. @sexymofosbby6 жыл бұрын
You’re still creating a demand for leather regardless of whether you buy it second hand or not. Your money isn’t going to like the pockets of the person who killed the cow directly, but you’re still giving your money to wear shoes of skin that’s not your own.
@22Piroko6 жыл бұрын
Just me Kangaroo leather is very sustainable product. Kangaroos aren’t bred, they don’t produce methane. The kangaroo population has recently skyrocketed. So the Australian government culls a small percentage so that the whole population doesn’t overpopulate and die off. They and then used for meat and then the leather is a third tier bi product, that would otherwise be thrown away. Thought you might find that interesting

I have SO much respect for you and your lifestyle, and derive great encouragement from your content as I also am a “non-vegan low-waster.” I hope that you do not get discouraged or frustrated, because I am sure there are far more people who derive value from your content compared to the people who can’t even bother to read your food-losophy or the information box... @OliviaSlusher6 жыл бұрын
Actually it does. The only reason animal products have caused such an increase of environmental damage/waste is because of mass production. You can strive towards zero waste, while not contributing to mass production by buying from local farmers, and still not be vegan. Helping the environment isn't about total change, it's about developing what we have and limiting demand by simplifying.

Also, animal products, or by products are bio degradable and they are generally heavy duty as well as long lasting (if they're good quality) hence creating less waste and having a low impact

Very good point. However, so are sustainable materials like canvas or hemp with can easily be found organic and made into items such as wallets. I don't have a stake in this fight because i'm not vegan or fully zero waste by a long shot but it should be noted that you can be both zero waste/sustainable AND vegan pretty easily which would save the live of an animal...especially when it comes to goods such as wallets.

Forgot to say: one thing you've not mentioned was hankies in your bag. I have switched to cotton ones. I ordered quite a lot of them so they can go in the wash very regularly without me being short of napkins to use. I find them considerably better than disposable hankies and they save the plastic packaging. Realise this would not be advisable in a hospital setting. I had to really laugh when you mentioned your mum thought you had snaffled the napkin! Very funny!!! Have switched to cloth napkins, too, they wash a treat, look really nice and will last a long time.

Sorry to intrude, But in my opinion unless someone has a health condition which prevent them from using dairy and other animal products veganism need not be "religiously" followed. Like here in India we are great fans of dairy products and many village homes will still take care of and love there cows and calves. They are actully treated with respect, almost like an elder in the family, if you can imagine that. In the Muslim communities there are cow sacrfices,but these cows are usually raised by the people doing the sacrificed or at least sponsored and no part is wasted, not even the hooves and hornes. And no young calf has to die. This sacrifice is seen as equivalent to parting with a beloved family member to understand the loss that everyone who loose a loved one go through . This also has a religious aspect. You can search more about these things. Eco friendly living is , as believed here, living in concert with the natural cycles, with all plant and animal and rivers and earth. we take what we need but never in a way that permanently robs mother nature of anything or harms Her in the long term. And I believe sustainable or zero waste or minimal waste living is just that . Sorry for rambling. Please do not take offence. Only expressing my opinion, I mean no harm and definitely don't mean to preach anything.

I’m so pissed that the radical vegans/environmentalists scare the fuck out of people and they will never consider reducing animal consumption again because they don’t want to turn into another radical bonkers.
