Sadly, we have a discussion of "human nature" which has nothing to do with nature.....nature demands survival and then reproduction.....for most of nature, this is a simple process.....for humans, this began simply.....where groups were small, and co-operation made sense.....once the groups became larger....these strategies become more competitive......accumulation of wealth and power increases not only mating opportunities, but the success of one's progeny also. So what you are seeing in humans is "natures biological imperatives" in action... unfortunately nature also imposes limits for those species that exceed the environmental constraints needed to support larger populations. Neither humans nor nature are intelligent.....nature simply imposes limits on the life forms within it....which essentially contradicts the biological imperatives that are primary to all life forms....to refuse to recognize this, is not intelligent....since all economics requires "growth".....such discussions are essentially non sequitur.

''Truth is, mankind has not yet worked-out how to control free-riders (i.e. bullies, thieves & cheats) in complex societies'' Bang on, thanks. We could deal with the people with these traits much more easier in the past when populations were intimately connected and small, obviously in modern towns or cities coupled with a lot of reward toward selfish behaviour, it is easier to get away with this behavior. But most people, day to day, are co-operating even as they have to deal with this parasitic system.

Dear Mr. Gregory, " All social indicators show that everyone is physically & mentally healthier in more egalitarian societies. Does this suggest to you that cooperation only ‘made sense’ in small groups?" No, it suggests that when there is enough for everyone, that the society will be relatively more stable, when this is true, than when it is not true, regardless of size. There is a much higher probability that this will be true more often for smaller groups than larger ones, rendering your cited "observation" obvious, and your attempted rhetorical question irrelevant. "Truth is, mankind has not yet worked-out how to control free-riders (i.e. bullies, thieves & cheats) in complex societies. " No, the truth IS that the behavior of individuals in simple "small" societies and the co-operation that exists there, does not translate or adapt well to the "complexity" of societies that emerged with the advent of agriculture. These societies, because of the "increase" in available resources, which we can say resulted from a technological improvement, and created other functions, which drew larger populations, did not provide enough useful or productive work, for everyone, nor did the social hierarchy which developed from it, recognize an obligation to those who were redundant to it's efficient operation. Your very language and the use of the term "free riders" confirms all of this, as well as, the selfish and unintelligent response to this set of circumstances and what can be expected of "human nature", which has not changed. If you are a follower of Dr Wolff, he has posed the question regarding the distribution of "profits" and "increased productivity" by suggesting that when a business gets more efficient, rather than laying off individuals, the co-operative response, would be to keep everyone and simply allow them to work less hours for the same pay? Which bring us to your final declaration.... "This ‘biological imperatives’ explanation is misconceived. " ( with link ) I did enjoy the link, which was interesting, informative and again completely irrelevant, but did contain something quite useful which I shall get to, in due course. The first order of business requires that some expansion and clarification of what is meant by "biological imperatives" and the scope of what aspects of human behavior that are included and those which are not, in order to supplement the conclusions offered in my initial post. The imperative to survive and reproduce is somewhat obvious and the evidence for this is somewhat stark...in 1960 human population was 3 billion, today it is 7.2 billion...and this is in conjunction with a century which saw the wholesale slaughter of humans by humans, on a scale unprecedented.....and it didn't make a dent, while further compounded by the fact that of the 4.2 billion added, very few can look forward to improved prospects, while those born into better circumstance, also face dwindling prospects. So, as noted previously, this does little to support the idea that our species is either intelligent or any more capable of anticipating the consequences of our actions than we have ever been, and biological evolution is not capable of producing the necessary adaptation, because DNA does not code for "logical reasoning" nor can it be inherited. The answer to that profound question "Is our children learning?" is an obvious NO. For all intents and purposes, this is all that is meant by biological imperative.....but there are two other aspects of behavior, which further complicate our inability to escape or alter the consequences of of this imperative. The most recent is that of Robert Trivers in The Folly of Fools, which lays out the dynamics of small groups and the natural co-operation that results when these groups remain under 150 members....and the benefits of same are shared, to include that of reciprocal altruism. Beyond this number, cohesion begins to break down and one loses one's place. To counter this, an all encompassing meme needs to be introduced, to produce a shared commonality, which will hopefully include as many individuals as possible....but unfortunately, it will not include everyone, even though, the biological imperative is still in force.....and since, the society has not in any way accepted the responsibility for all its members, but only those necessary or fortunate enough to be considered "productive" to it.....those excluded, being compelled to "survive and reproduce", will do so by any means necessary. The larger the society becomes, the more memes will be added, and the intersections will either compete or co-operate, based on immediate, perceived benefit and this behavior will also extend to the excluded elements. The final aspect was offered by Desmond Morris in the Human Zoo, published in the late 60's which list the Ten Rules of Dominance.....which I refer to as "monkey rules" and in the case of humans, "talking monkey rules." The United States is fortunate to have an "orange talking monkey" as president, who is a walking poster child for them, since unlike the other "dominant talking monkeys" he has not developed the intelligence to realise that a certain amount of restraint is required, lest the "exploited" monkeys catch on.....and that the discretion of having "public" and "private" positions is paramount. ( you may be caught anyway but the intelligence of the "exploited" talking monkey is not all that great, and all those competing memes produce sufficient division to distract from any co-ordinated action against the actual "source" of their problems. ) 70% of the people are dissatisfied with the "government", yet at a minimum 80% of the incumbents who are "responsible" are returned to office. Then there is a portion of your link which deals with bee's and hives, and "gene expression" which permits the female to shift from worker, to scout, to guard, depending on the needs of the hive. This is hardly a unique characteristic, and given the general nature of the tasks involved, not particularly impressive.....but bee's like humans are example of "social species" as identified and studied by E.O. Wilson. None of what is in the link is particularly relevant to the biological imperative to survive and reproduce, and while it may play a part in the evolution of the species and natural selection.....it does not allow "drones" to become workers, or interrupt the continual "reproduction" of the queen. The solution for over population here, when the circumstances require it, is the "creation" of a new queen, who then leaves, taking a portion of the population with her to establish a new hive at a respectable distance, and easing the pressure of over population. The biological imperative of survive and reproduce remains unaltered. Finally, given the biological imperative of survive and reproduce, the hierarchies that emerge and the improvement of status in larger societies, improves both one's security from a survival standpoint as well as one's mating opportunities from a reproductive one.....as one commands greater power and resources, within that society. This is the "history" of complex societies made possible by agriculture.....and the reason for it, is that these societies are formed to support the "controlling hierarchy" while the hierarchies responsibility to the welfare of the entirety of it's citizens, has never been an acknowledged responsibility of the ruling class, who need not concern themselves beyond that of a general nature, unless there is a significant threat to it continuation of status and privilege. While there are some societies who have made progress and have become more socially inclusive regarding the welfare of its citizens, the question of whether they can be sustained as the failure of current economic theory is realised, from both internal pressures and external threats, remains to be seem. The laws of nature do not require "permission" to survive and until our species grants and acknowledges this right, and take responsibility to insure it "unconditionally" to all, the so called "civilized societies" have no more moral right to "survive" than those they have excluded from it, nor do they have a "moral right" to expect acceptable behavioral standards to be met, when they not willing to offer anything in exchange and where the expectation of becoming expendable is the obvious outcome, when one's usefulness is no longer necessary.

I'm glad Dr. Fraad brought up the paradox between how we raise our children (to share) and how adults are upon growing up (to take as much as possible). I've always felt this conflict does nothing but screw up our kids' minds. We teach them to do good, altruistic things but end up not exemplifying it for them ourselves for them. It's a social hypocrisy that capitalism loves fostering because it somehow gives it a clean image while being what it always was.

Whomp Biscuits so true! This contradiction reminds me of Printing Money: in Econ101 you learn that it's bad and yields to Inflation. Then you graduate and work at an Investment Bank or Hedge Fund, and they tell you the Fed doing Quantitative Easing is alright. Except it's not. It's straight-up printing money and giving it to the banks.

Inflation is acceptable, if there is added-value production behind it. I am also willing to accept FRB-induced inflation if the bailout was a bit more skewed towards the bottom (i.e. trickle up). But to tell me that we let bankers commit crimes, then replace their toxic and non-performing assets with fresh money that they will in turn loan back to us at interest is complete nonsense. I am not stupid. I know a bad deal when I see one.

I support the concept of money being common means of exchange, an abstraction for the existence of exchange, I believe in being efficient and productive, and no one is gonna give 100% of effort 100% of time like the myth of self proclaimed non lazy people who often are capitalists. I can even get with the market, because acknowledging market trends etc can be very telling but market places can be a place to share ideas and works, not to profit. I can't support capitalism because at it's roots it is about exploitation and inequality. It may yield results, but that is only parts of capitalism. A full capitalist system I can never mentally digest.

I was born and live in the Northeast Region of Brazil, and I regularly watch Prof. Richard Wolff's videos on KZfaq. I cannot overstate how wonderful it is to see a resurgence of different perspectives and voices in a country with decades of inverted totalitarianism, plutocratic rule, and undisputed economo-political supremacy over its overseas provinces. it's very good indeed that communist and socialist ideas are coming back from the ashes of over half a century of indoctrination, persecution, and domination by a tyrannical, oligarchic, autocratic, fascist elite, which has never had any legitimate liking for democratic ideals, and which has oppressed its own people and those in foreign sovereign nations. I sincerely hope this raising in awareness of the American people continues its pace and grows ever stronger towards a truly equal, just, and sustainable world community.

This explanation of the contradictions that occur from the time we are socialized as young children and then the completely opposing values we are taught as we mesh into a capitalist society are a fascinating insight that I never realized. As we grow older, we are basically told to "throw all that sharing crap away" and take all we can, and give as little back as possible to increase profits. Wouldn't that 180 degree turn around confuse us all and make our brains scrambled eggs morally and ethically resulting in a depressed, confused, and over all screwed up society? It would appear so. No wonder we take so much Prozac, etc. This answers a lot of questions.

Our society is based on exclusion: in short, you got the money (i.e. power, access, opportunity, you name it), you got it all. But if you're weak (poor, marginalized, you name it), you just don't get the access to a decent job, to a decent life. Co-ops are a lunacy: they will adapt themselves to the system and will act more or less just like other capitalistic enterprises, just doing a little better for their co-owners, but that's all. The answer to capitalism is twofold: First, act through TAXATION, so it becomes impossible to amass ludicrous riches (billions, wtf, who NEEDS billions, really?). Second, act through legislation aimed at guaranteeing every able person a decent EDUCATION and corresponding JOB opportunities. We are already over-producing and over-consuming: therefore we need to SHARE, not just another form of competition. We need to take care of the economically weaker elements (typically, those working very useful jobs for dismal salaries, such as blue collar workers, teachers, nurses, you get the picture), for they too have a great deal to contribute to society, they just don't get to express their potential under this loony system of capitalism based on amassing and excluding.

It's part of acculturation to think that your culture is just "natural" - it's part of how we learn how to act, behave, and function within our society and culture. We internalize it as we grow up. That's also why humans often have such strong reactions when they encounter another culture that does things in a different way - whether it's a small or large difference. Since I've been studying anthropology, I've learned quite a bit about other cultures and I've often had to face my own biases and assumptions about "human nature" and what's "normal" - it turns out that very little of what we do in everyday life is actually indicative of anything other than our own culture. Our ideas about even basic things about gender are purely cultural. The number one advantage that humans have is our adaptability. And that adaptability is rooted in our culture. Human cultures are extremely varied and have adapted to different environments and situations in ways that are frankly awe-inspiring. There are very few "universal" laws and cultural norms. And I suspect that as we learn more and more about different cultures and societies, even those few common traits might very well disappear.

That capitalism NEEDS a justification is in itself a sign of the deeply social nature of homo sapiens. Those who profit from the system prefer to live in their bubble so they can suppress the unsightly and disturbing sight of other humans suffering (which inevitably would trigger your empathy unless you are firmly grounded in your selfish schemes). * And it helps to have a good "ideology" to "solve" the contradictions - so humans can follow their selfish instead of their empathic impulses - and still feel good about themselves. We have a deep need to be validated by our peers - in the ice age that was the tribe (and even the best of the hunters was dependent on the tribe). We are still very loyal to the tribe - only the definition of "tribe" has changed. Like the Hampton crowd and my collegues from Wallstreet. The politicians I meet at the fundraisers, and the folks I know from my Ivy League school. Of course family, friends and the country club fellows. People wearing the right expensive clothes or drive the right kind of cars or live in a beautiful neighbourhood have a chance to become "honorary" tribe members. Which entitles you to being treated with decency. It is hard for humans to extend our natural empathy to too many people or people we do not interact with on that "intimate" basis - we are wired to function in groups of 20 - 100 members. So in the age of nuclear weapons, world wide trade, Global warming, etc. our frontal lobes will have to help out with insight - our instincts (which are much stronger and much more reliable) do not suffice anymore. * Note how wealthy or even middle class people often HATE to see beggars (veterans ! in the U.S. may get a pass - the rich that often profit from war are glad as hell that someone else is playing the role of cannon fodder, they made sure to not use the draft after Vietnam anymore). I live in a wealthy European country, poor people from Southern Europe (often Gypsies, or other folks from Romania and Bulgaria) come to beg in the center of the cities (which are good areas, lots of shops, restaurants, people doing shopping or windowshopping, meeting friends in cafes). The beggars are not criminal, or filthy, they cause no harm and do only passive begging - no harrassment of pedestrians. Still many citizens are pissed off - even though they could easily ignore them in the busy streets with literally hundreds of passers-by. Just SEEING them (and being reminded that other people are unfortunate enough to have to resort to begging) is too much. Trump had problems with seeing "such" people as well. In New York veterans have the right to have stands where they can sell stuff - one of these veterans was nearby Trump Tower and Trump made sure he was removed by the city - even though the guy had the law on his side. A better - or smarter - rich person would have made sure the stand was looking good (maybe giving him one to fit in with the high end environment) and use it as photo-op. Well, not Trump, the bully.

Competition and cooperation are flip sides of the same coin that shaped human evolution. Homo sapiens evolved in small groups that competed with other groups for territory & resources, while multi-level selection theory teaches us that selection takes place at every level that it can. In other words, less giving individuals beat out more giving individuals within a group but more cooperative groups beat out less cooperative groups. So, we are both competitive and cooperative at the same time, and harsher conditions of survival on a group create greater demands for cooperation within that group.

Our anthropolog scientist Stanislav Drobyshevsky often says that there are two completely different ways of ape evolving - the way of aggressive apes and the way of "kind" apes. And humans evolved because our ancestors were pushed to become kind ones. Aggressive apes were too strong to compete with them so our ancestors succeeded by choosing "kind" path of cooperation, where adult males don't exile each other from the horde.

Felt compelled to make this comment to aknowledge and thank you and God for the lovely human beings that Mr. Wolff and Mrs Fraad are and the most important work they've been doing. Discussing the basic mythical notion that human nature is predatory by design in order to completly move it away is fundamental to pave and point the way for a better future society knowing the future begins in our heads. So I congratulate you, the elderly, the most experienced and scholar, with good human instincts and with a consciousness and still not corrupted - by contrast with the majority - for this most noble and urgent work of educating the masses also knowing that if you don't do it no one else will, specially not the ignorant moron ones in charge. Thank you, Prof. RD Wolff! May you never tire in this noble endeavour. I have never enjoyed binge-watching anything as I do your awesome lectures, some even more than once and all shared with all whom I know. California now has Medicare for all. Yay! Does this mean that the glory days of insurance p/meddlers are coming to an end? I hope so. A govt program has no need for excessive multimillion dollar executive salaries, redundant advertising and a bloated administration whose primary job is to deny access to medical care to as many, as long as often as possible. Those are just three expenditures that will (how soon?) reduce the overall cost to a reasonable number that will not burden M/C. N'est-ce pas? The govt program will be expensive at first because it will have to deal with a likely influx of a LOT of peeps who have been denied care for "pre-existing conditions" which got worse as time went by with no means to stop the deterioration. On the plus side, the great number of peeps who will benefit from this program will be able to enter the workforce, earn money and... what a concept!... be able to pay taxes a part of which will further add to the M/C budget. For the sake of Californians and the rest of the country's citizenry watching how this will play out, this a step in the long overdue direction which, I hope and wish, will succeed in a spectacularly short time.

On sugar: I grew up on a sugar cane farm in Australia and my family has been screwed over by the corrupt world sugar market for my entire life. And whenever Australia and the US negotiate a "free trade deal" (I really wish my government would stop falling for that BS...) somehow Australian access to the US sugar market always gets conveniently left out. So even though Americans are paying high prices for sugar, the rest of us (who have to accept the world sugar price - and who usually live in countries that don't have agricultural subsidies) end up getting paid much, much less.

It is a fundamental problem, ppl in general don't understand how much of our behavior, our way of looking at the world, the way we think about things, is shaped by our environment. What seems natural ("human nature") is in fact very often is learned behavior. This is very easy to see when one travels the world and sees how different ppl, in different countries think and live differently. Do human beings naturally want to have things, do they have desires?...sure....but human beings should be taught balance when they are young. You can have nice things, but know how much is enough. Greed is a very destructive thing. Corporations are greedy, and a society that run by corporations is going to be greedy. Very simple. Change the environment, change the behavior.

I would add (if I may), that we can also be fooled into thinking we are doing the right thing, my own life experience makes me believe this. Example (Britain) 1980’s to early 2000’s, I saw lots of people gaining in wealth, I saw the public sector, social housing, hospitals, schools, being built, and in the private sector, factories, retail parks producing/selling all kinds of products, jobs were plentiful, money was being spent. So how was I fooled? Because I believed it was the trickle down effect, and believed that If I kept working hard, the spread of the wealth could and would only get better, how wrong could I be! 2019, well everyone listening to this podcast will know why!

The housing bubble had nothing to do with capitalism. The housing bubble was the product of social engineering, where Chris Dodd and Barney Frank hoped to move millions of low-income people into the middle class thru homeownership. They believed that housing prices never decline, and therefore we can loan mortgage $ to people with bad credit, because even if they defaulted, the house could be resold and the original mortgage be paid off from the sale proceeds. Of course, it turned out that house prices actually CAN decline sometimes, causing the financial crisis.

In the real world, it does not work that way because the primary obligation of the government is to retain independence and integrity of its state if it will focus on the wellbeing of people as primary goals it will not survive long enough for those people to notice its effort. If you want to have wellbeing you must have strong army strong economy and a big weight in geopolitics where you decide where investments will go and who will get what. in a way the when some Arab company wants to buy airplanes you come and say you will buy ours or else we will bring you democracy.

I love you Professor Wolff, but I still am bothered by how you define socialism. Workers co-ops, in a system that still is run off of the basis of profit, still must sacrifice themselves to the interests of capital. Additionally, you never seem to emphasize that production needs to be organized outside of the workplace too. If not organized on a properly social basis, how do you propose to organize industry? Market socialism?
@nblumer
@nblumer 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean by the statement that worker coops still run on the basis of profit. In a credit union, for example, surpluses not put back into expansion or upgrades are distributed back to members + workers. We can assume that rational workers will understand that a certain amount of that surplus must be used for the good of future growth and at other times best put into improving the welfare of workers. Capitalism is not the only way to conduct market exchange. All economic systems in the past and future will involve an exchange of goods and services. The question is whether we want these relationships to be based on free association. Capitalist corporations are based on command structures both within and externally in production and distribution channels. There may still be command based organizations in alternative systems but they would have to justify their legitimacy not just assume it as with corporate capitalism.

My foray into the left was unexpected. I abandoned the mainstream sources of information years ago. Once I returned from the Philippines where I inadvertently learned about the human cost of capitalism I began watching people like Steven Crowder, Shapiro, Ruben to re-educate myself on politics in the USA. After a couple months I came upon the "Jimmy Dore Show" where he was interviewing Mr. Wolff. It was an ah hah moment, I had been trying for years to make sense of our economical system and even had written papers on solutions. What I did not know was those papers I were writing were basically Marxism. It's a natural conclusion for a thinking person who is interested in equality. Now, Richard D. Wolff is my personal hero.

Iroquois didn't have teepees. They had longhouses. But yes, because descent and inheritance was tracked through the mother she owned the house. If she didn't want her husband anymore? She just kicked him out. Men still ran their government system, but because of the power that women had at home, it created a balance of power. No one wanted to piss off his mother in law - she might convince his wife to kick him out and send him back to his mother.

Master(mastro in italian I should know) & slave mentality is correct, growing up as I have I can tell you that the people surrounding me feel as though it should be this way, that it must be this way them knowing to live in character that is never breaking character(their manipulative facade). Most people have no idea the level of insidiousness & how wide spread it is trying to tell most people their circumstance is mostly futile in my experience but I hope that I am wrong that I've just been unlucky in the people whom I have had contact with though I've interacted with most "classes" of people. When you do this you get quite the view which leaves you one of two options, say yes & treat humanity as a sick reality show or learn to deal with people constantly stabbing you in the back because they suddenly decide to sell out like what Morpheus warns of that at any moment people can be paid/blackmailed into acting as a human shield or red shield or red dress which is why Rothschild means Red Shield for esoteric context.

Bringing up human societal evolution is interesting but I think it's easier to look at present examples of communism which exist all around us. In the capitalist workplace for example each level of hierarchy is a communist group or clique; management is one group and the workers are another. Not all groups can be equal because they have access to different resources, different upbringings etc. How can society as a whole bring about equality between all the these groups without the use of a totalitarian force?
