EcoTec Equinox/Malibu 2.4 timing chain replacement with motor out of car

This one is also on an Equinox. Just wanted to make one with visible timing marks.

Since the motor is pulled out wouldn't this be a good time to replace water pump and chain or did this motor have low miles?

We do a water pump, plugs, thermostat on every car we do a motor. If other things leak such as valve covers and such, those are also replaced.

Cam bolts shouldn't be reused. Torque to yield just like head bolts

Why would you install everything and torqued down before installing the cam bolts? I understand that's incase you need to redo the chain, so only do them only hand tight so incase something happens that the phasers don't accidentally get knocked off the cam

3:25 Did this chain not have timing marks or were you just making the timing mark links easier to see? I'm doing a timing chain replacement on my car and the chain that's on it doesn't seem to have any colored links, or if they were colored once, they aren't now.

I just do the white to make it more visible. They do have colored links but it's a dark color.

@@CarMechaNick LOL Yep. Car makers make cars just good enough to last through their warranty period, on average. If they made cars as well as they could, new car sales would drop by a factor of 10 easily.

That's why everyone needs a good ol honda or toyota. Atleast a backup one in the fleet.

1:48 This, I found out can be a nightmare for the shade-tree mechanic. My 2012 Terrain that I bought second hand, had been in a shop 10k miles before I got it for a timing chain service. The shop completely ripped off the previous owner to the tune of $1400. I know they ripped him off because the top chain guide was completely sheared off and the tensioner completely rusted. So I'm doing it right myself. But holy smokes that tensioner is in a bad spot. Luckily the Astro Pneumatic Onyx 1822 and 32mm impact socket (Tekton brand) will just fit back there. I was starting to fear that I was going to have to pull the head off behind this job. Thankfully not. It would be nice if everyone knew an Eric O. but sadly there are shops that will straight rob you. It pays to learn about this stuff. Even if you are OK paying a shop a third the price of a new engine for this work, a simple look at the tensioner would have clued the guy I bought my car from that his shop isn't doing the work they say they're doing.

Glad you figured it out. That top guide often times will be ground away. As well as the long black guide towards the front of the motor. Sometimes it's so bad the chain eats the bolt too! It's crazy. It's not a terrible job, I enjoy these in or out of the car and they pay well. Good luck my friend!
