I believe Massena served with more future marshals than any other. In his famous victory at Zurich in 1799, depicted in the thumbnail, Massena is addressing his chief of staff Nicolas Oudinot (foreground) and his divisional commanders Eduard Mortier and Jean-de-Dieu Soult (background).

I like marshal suchet because of his humanitarian approach he did know if you want to keep a territory you have to conquer peoples hearts unlike soult

Andre massena was born in nice, at that time not technically part of france but at the kingdom of Piedmont sardinian. his father a shopkeeper died when he was young, so he ran away to sea then at 17 enlist himself on a local volunteer battalion. massena supremely self confident and unfaze by any challenge, was elected to command a battalion and led it with success on the piedmontese front. despite his lack of education he proved himself an instinctive combat leader and after leading a successful attack at the siege of toulon was made general of division.

I always think what if France was in a position of its 1805 position when the WW2 started, France would have knocked Germany out of war with Davout, Bertheir and Masséna

Napoleon would have saved France, little question in my mind. He was far too bold to allow Germany’s movements during the actual history.

Only one man will emerge to rule France. The First Consul - Napoleon Bonaparte. And what better way to cement his hold on power than a new military campaigns and a return to Italy.
