Venezuela is the latest country to cut diplomatic ties with Ecuador over a raid on Mexico's Embassy in early April. Ryan Dubé, a reporter at The Wall Street Journal covering politics and economics in Latin America, joins CBS News to discuss how the raid impacts diplomacy in the region.

Very shallow analysis. Ignores, oversees and minimizes one of the best diplomatic traditions in the world, like Mexico’s. In regard to asylum, non-intervention on domestic issues, peaceful resolution of conflicts, etc. Indeed a very defective approach to Latin Amerca’s diplomatic issues.

The Issue is that Ecuador did not even take the appropriate steps to resolve the issue. Ecuador should have requested a meeting and started the process with the OEA, there is already a process established that involves a neutral 3rd party and the refugee being placed in their cre while that issue is resolved with both parties stating their reasons.

I don't think you understand how International Law works. Attacking an Embassy is grounds for a declaration of War. Of course all the American countries had to condemned the action, otherwise their own diplomats could be taken as hostages should an arbitary government decides to act. So, no, Noboa did anything but take the right decision. All he did was to isolate his country, risking expulsion from the UN, and very likely, put Ecuador in Mexico's debt.

@@revertrevertz5438 Why would Mexico protect a convicted Ecuadorian politician? Simply public condemnation, while corruption rules the day. So, Ecuador should thank Mexico for sending their cartels south? I am sure the government of Mexico benefits financially from their cartels operating in Ecuador and would benefit even more if Ecuador was soft on the cartels and allowed them to operate more freely.

@@edgartoepel7473 the question is completely irrelevant for two reasons: 1) The guy had not been convicted. Whether in your mind he was guilty or not, that’s irrelevant. Even the Ecuadorian courts determined that the arrest was done illegally. 2) This case can set a damaging precedent to any country that host a diplomatic post in Ecuador. Firstly Ecuador broke a greater Law, so you cannot fight crime with crime. Secondly, if this goes unpunished this has the potential of turning diplomats as potential hostages 3) Ecuador has been condemned by every American state, and some have already cut diplomatic ties with them. They risk expulsion from the UN and economic sanctions. Do you think that was a great idea after all of that?
